Re: Snow Geese

2015-11-18 Thread Alan C

Yeah, I know the problem only too well. Interesting shot, though.

There are flocks of flamingos at the edges of various mine slimes dams
around here but the nearest one can approach is about 1km. For safety &
legal reasons, access to mine property by members of the public is
prohibited. Another consideration is that the mere presence of the flamingos
indicates the high salt content of the water.

Re: Peso: Snow Geese

2013-09-08 Thread John

I don't know. It might have been a Bald Eagle flying over. I saw that
happen several times earlier in the day.

I also saw two red shoulder hawks squabbling over a snow goose carcase
that one or the other must have brought down. That was over near the
feeding grounds.

This is just part of one of several great flocks(?) that exploded up
from the pond simultaneously; just a tiny bit of what was visible in one
direction. At the same time I took this, there was another great flock
overhead and a third passing behind me.

Within another 15 minutes, they'd all returned and settled in again and
by then the light was completely gone.

When I got there in January, it was the coldest day of the winter,
record setting low temperatures overnight this was one of two ponds
that wasn't completely frozen over.

The park volunteers told me the geese the Sandhill Cranes usually
spread out to several other ponds, but with the other ponds iced over
they were all concentrated in the two big ponds for a few days.

This is the best slice out of one frame, sort of what you could do with
the PZ-1p. Except that PZ-1p always gave you the center of the frame,
and this is from the bottom third.

Re: Nov Snow Geese

2012-11-17 Thread Jack Davis
Thanks much Bob and Frank!!

As Carl Sagan would put it; billions and billions of Snow geese arrive each
Nov. Just unimaginable numbers, most of which hang around 'til well in to Feb.
Fewer Canada geese, but still a good number.
Quite a few Canadas summer over at the local lakes. Each time I see them I'm
reminded of the oft expressed disgust with which they are held by many Canadian
humans. ;-)

Re: Nov Snow Geese

2012-11-15 Thread Jack Davis
Thanks, Paul!
When I looked up and noticed the geese coming at me over that fall tree, I set
an f/13 aperture with the hope of acceptable focus of both the tree and the
next line/flock of geese.
OK, I did juice the tree color some.

This was by far the choice from a number of shots.

Very nice!. Beautiful V.
Appears possible that the final composition was achieved through
cropping. I do it all the time, for that matter, but if you have a
scosh more room, it may benefit from being slightly opened up.
Moon focus is great! Geese, understandably, slightly soft which doesn't
really detract that much.

Thanks, Marnie. Several people have mentioned wanting more room. I
cropped a little on the left and bottom to remove some partial birds.
In hindsight I guess I could just clone them out easily enough which
would open the composition a bit more.

Moon focus is great! Geese, understandably, slightly soft which doesn't
 really detract that much.

Thanks, Jack. I did crop slightly to remove a half bird from the left

for the 1/160 shutter speed. I think the plan was right, but my
execution was lacking... If I had tracked the birds, the moon would be OOF.

I like this one. It is somewhat unusual getting the moon in there
like that without some photoshop trickery. You also managed to keep
them in frame. Not a shore bird, but nice anyway.

I understand the focus/movement difficulties you mentioned. Simply a
way of telling you I notices, but I consider them no problem.
May I suggest you remove the part birds in Photoshop rather than by
cropping?

Thanks, Bruce. There were what seemed like 20 thousand of those guys
flying overhead. I saw a bunch that were going to cross in front of the
moon and just sorta held focus on the moon and released the shutter when
they were framed right.

Earlier in the day, whilst running an errand I passed by the bay where
the snow geese were congregating. Too bad I couldn't have spent some
time shooting them bobbing in the water or landing/taking off etc. It's
an annual event but the afternoon light Saturday was spectacular.

Thanks, Paul. No, unfortunately, the geese are pretty OOF because they
were moving across the frame while I held steady on the moon. The moon
is pretty damn sharp for 300mm + 1.4x TC, hand held at 1/160 :-)

In reference to the pink color cast, Mount Baker often looks like that
toward sunset. on clear days, I can see it out my east windows 120km (75

The white van does have a pink tint, because
it's sunset.
I guess one could call it vw bus with alpenglow.
Most of the photos, except for a couple, were
taken close to sunrise or sunset.
That's when the light is the most interesting,
in my opinion.
I seek out strange light conditions.
In this case, it was the rising and setting sun
filtering through the fog with the
snow geese overhead, and hence the pink and
yellow tints. (and no photoshop)

We see Canadian Geese in similar numbers here in Illinois and Wisconsin.
They are marked differently, but quite stunning when seen in migration.
Usually happens in later fall...

Yeah, but that would cheating, right?
The photos are a realistic reproduction of
the hazy quality of light, with the washed out
mountain in the background.
It's Washington state in the winter,
and considering that it was January,
the light was very good that day.
I did use a .6 ND grad filter with some
of the Mt. Baker scenes. I have thought
of getting the .9 ND grad filter, but I think
it would become too obvious that a filter is
being used.
Tweaking to me means using filters, film,
and exposure compensation.
