Re: Snow Geese
Yeah, I know the problem only too well. Interesting shot, though. There are flocks of flamingos at the edges of various mine slimes dams around here but the nearest one can approach is about 1km. For safety & legal reasons, access to mine property by members of the public is prohibited. Another consideration is that the mere presence of the flamingos indicates the high salt content of the water. Re: Peso: Snow Geese
I don't know. It might have been a Bald Eagle flying over. I saw that happen several times earlier in the day. I also saw two red shoulder hawks squabbling over a snow goose carcase that one or the other must have brought down. That was over near the feeding grounds. This is just part of one of several great flocks(?) that exploded up from the pond simultaneously; just a tiny bit of what was visible in one direction. At the same time I took this, there was another great flock overhead and a third passing behind me. Within another 15 minutes, they'd all returned and settled in again and by then the light was completely gone. When I got there in January, it was the coldest day of the winter, record setting low temperatures overnight this was one of two ponds that wasn't completely frozen over. The park volunteers told me the geese the Sandhill Cranes usually spread out to several other ponds, but with the other ponds iced over they were all concentrated in the two big ponds for a few days. This is the best slice out of one frame, sort of what you could do with the PZ-1p. Except that PZ-1p always gave you the center of the frame, and this is from the bottom third. Re: Nov Snow Geese
Thanks, Paul! When I looked up and noticed the geese coming at me over that fall tree, I set an f/13 aperture with the hope of acceptable focus of both the tree and the next line/flock of geese. OK, I did juice the tree color some. This was by far the choice from a number of shots. Very nice!. Beautiful V. Appears possible that the final composition was achieved through cropping. The white van does have a pink tint, because it's sunset. I guess one could call it vw bus with alpenglow. Most of the photos, except for a couple, were taken close to sunrise or sunset. That's when the light is the most interesting, in my opinion. I seek out strange light conditions. In this case, it was the rising and setting sun filtering through the fog with the snow geese overhead, and hence the pink and yellow tints. Yeah, but that would cheating, right? The photos are a realistic reproduction of the hazy quality of light, with the washed out mountain in the background. It's Washington state in the winter, and considering that it was January, the light was very good that day. I did use a .6 ND grad filter with some of the Mt. Baker scenes. I have thought of getting the .9 ND grad filter, but I think it would become too obvious that a filter is being used. Tweaking to me means using filters, film, and exposure compensation.
