Hi, I have had the experience of seeing/using many
a lenses over the last 10 years due to ebay buy and
try ( sell if you don't like ). Not only do these
rubber rings sometimes get worn down, sometimes
they crack and fall off and get lost! I am not
saying it's a major problem with K/M lenses in nice
near mint condtion but there some lenses outthere that have
just taken a beating, like cars with over 500,000 miles.

I don't know how JCO uses his lenses if he's wearing out the focusing
rings. I have a lens or two still from my Nikon days that I bought
used in 1981. They were used to make many thousands of pictures for
twenty years in my hands. The rubberized focusing rings still look
like they're brand new.

So we can add to the Whack-A-Mole's ineptness the fact that he abuses
these obsolete lenses. "You only hurt the ones you love ..." and all
that, I guess.

They are more slippery when when ribbed

I don't need to save face. I stand behind

Mistakes. You on the other hand, keep making

In the cold, the metal gets slick, the rubber doesn't.

I've got rubber-grip lenses dating back to pre-K/M era ('72-era Nikkors)
and none of them have worn down and gotten slick. The only slick rubber
grip lens I have is the SMC-F 35-70 which came that way, and it was a
cheap hunk of crap even when new.

John,

I own one of these lenses (A very nice little Super Takumar 50/1.4).
Only one of my rubber-grip lenses has a smooth grip (the $40 SMC-F 35-80
f4-5.6). The knurled rubber grips have more friction and grip better
than the knurled metal units. Both are thoroughly usable (unlike the
craptacular focus ring on the SMC-F 35-80)

I prefer a good rubber ring as it's easier to grip with gloves and in
other adverse conditions. The knurled rings slip, although they do feel
more solid.

Re: Spotmatic F and Super Takumars

2006-10-21 Thread Paul Stenquist
The 35/3.5 Super Tak is superb as well, but it doesn't have the
latest coatings that the Super-Multi-Coated or SMC K versions boast..
Any SMC or Super-Multi-Coated Takumar is a superb lens. Wonderful on
a Spotmatic, Spotmatic F, ES or ES2. Nice on a "D" as well with stop
down metering. Which, by the way, is all you get on a Spotmatic.

Correction. This one is Super Multi-Coated. So I think in the mid 60s I

Never really liked this style of knurled control ring much. It is
identical to the original Nikkors that my Nikon F came with. I prefer

they're nicer looking.

But this is just a matter of aesthetics and does not influence

Yes, you're right. I owned the zoom. Sold it recently for a fairly
good price. The SMCT 85/1.9 is very rare because it was replaced

My Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 400/5.6 is manual stopdown only. It is a
beautiful lens despite that, though. A bit bulky and impractical for

Of the SMCT lenses with the round rubberized focus rings,
Not the one in your pic. They were labelled "SMC" takumars
Instead of "Super-Multi-Coated" takumars on the front ring.

Super Takumar and earlier lenses have those rings, some SMC takumars
have them as well.

Pentax (And everybody else) stopped making them because rubber rings
have a more positive grip and are cheaper to make.
