RE: Spotmatic F lens question

2001-05-14 Thread Provencher, Paul M.

Hi Robert,

You may already have your answer but here goes:

The SMC is designed for the Spotmatic F (and also ES or ESII) camera(s).
The differences you cite couple the lens to the metering system for open
aperture metering. The resistance you feel is normal. It is the indexing
lug moving the meter index ring to communicate the maximum (largest opening)
aperture that the lens is capable of providing. This serves to index the
meter for the lens attached.

The tab you spoke of tells the meter what aperture is selected so that the
meter can read the correct brightness and display the meter needle in
correct position. All this happens as you use the f-stop ring and shutter
speed dial. You should NOT use the switch on the side of the camera with
the SMC lens except as a depth-of-field preview. It will cause your meter
to behave incorrectly when using open-aperture metering capable lenses.

With the other lens, the one with nothing but the pin, you SHOULD use the
switch on the side of the camera to activate stop down metering, as with the
Spotmatic and Spotmatic II cameras. Push the switch up, center the needle
by turning the f-stop ring and/or shutter speed dial (the viewfinder will
darken as the aperture gets smaller - this is normal). You can turn off the
switch once you have metered (not true with ES or ESII cameras) and shoot.

Subject: Spotmatic F lens question

I hope someone can answer a question about my Spotmatic F.
Is the SMC Takumar the correct lens for the Spotmatic F?
And if so, is it normal to feel resistence when screwing
the lens on?

Here's why I'm asking:

My Spotmatic F came with a SMC Takumar 55mm f 1.8 lens. I
assume (perhaps wrongly) that it's the original lens. But
when I screw it on, I meet resistence (back-pressure) just
before the lens is completely screwed in. I apply a slight
pressure and the lens screws in completely, and works fine.

I also have a Super Takumar 55mm f1.8 that *didn't* come
with the camera, but it actually connects more easily to the
camera. No resistence, no back pressure.

This seems to be because the two lenses are different on
the back.

The Super has only the little pin that actuates the
diaphragm. Nothing else.

The SMC also has the pin, but on the opposite side of the
mount there is a long slot with a metal lever of some kind
sticking up.

I can't tell what the lever is supposed to do, but it is
somehow connected to the f-stop ring, because when I turn
the ring, the lever moves with it. I suppose this has to do
with the stop-down metering.

Thank you for your time.

Yes, all is well and you have come to the correct reasoning.

the resistance comes from the mechanism which allows for
open-aperture metering as in the later K-mounts.
