Could be, but the good stuff very rarely comes up for sale because there's so few serious Pentax users in this country (and I only see what's in this city). When the good gear does become available it's usually really cheap compared to US prices. The down side is that new equipment is very expensive. Cheers, - Dave David A. Mann, B.E. Mike Johnston writes: You're not patronizing a camera thief, are you?!? I bloody hope not. In the case of the 300 the camera shop staff (where I bought it from) were talking to the owner on the phone while I was there to confirm that he had accepted their monetary offer so they could sell me the lens. I know them quite well and they've done me a big favour. I think the previous owner needs his head examined for letting such a gem sell so cheap, though. The 85 could possibly be stolen but is unlikely as I bought it from one of the more reputable secondhand shops. I assume they would have checked against the police stolen items database, or at least contacted the university whos name is lightly engraved on it. I'm afraid to check into it myself in case I lose it, so I'll just put my faith in the retailer for doing the right thing :) Cheers, - Dave David A. Mann, B.E. This might make some of you a little jealous
Hi all, Well, what a grand week's shopping I've had. Last Saturday I picked up the SMC-A* 85/1.4 for NZ$800 (about US$330). I posted about that earlier so I won't dwell on it. This evening I just added another bargain. I am now the proud owner of an SMC-A* 300/4, in near-perfect condition complete with its original cap and case, for which I paid the grand sum of NZ$500 (about US$200). The only mark on it is a small scratch on the barrel near the serial number. I also picked up a decent metal hood for it as I noticed that the built-in hood is barely adequate (it'll do the job if I can't be bothered carrying the other one). It's such a pity this lens doesn't have a built-in tripod shoe, and I would definitely like it to focus a bit closer without resorting to an extension tube. Apart from all that it's rather a nice piece of glass :) I can't wait to go shooting with it during the weekend. I'm having a little trouble trying to find what the A*300/4 normally sells for on the secondhand market; if anyone would like to fill me in I'd appreciate it. BTW, the 1000mm f/8 and wooden tripod I keep mentioning appears to be still for sale. Drop me a line and I'll send you a link... Cheers, - Dave David A. Mann, B.E.
