I have the F version and I also use it a lot. Rarely from a tripod, but
I find the tripod mount to be pretty convenient anyway, for holding the
lens/camera combo and for hanging the lens from my belt while something
else is installed on the camera.

I've made one to use the Manfrotto QR system.

 It's since been black anodised.

Hmm. I would not be so comfortable with a clamp screw (even with
nylon buffer) putting pressure on a lens barrel at one point like
that. Even if the clamp band were a very precise fit.

I'd go for a Manfrotto 3420 Telephoto Lens Support ($65 from BH)
instead.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/126662-REG/
Bogen_Manfrotto_3420_3420_Telephoto_Lens_Support.html

or

http://tinyurl.com/34m87m

It looks even more agricultural but supports the camera body and lens
properly, clamps the lens with a band without a single pressure point.

Is the 300/4.5 so heavy that you couldn't just use the camera's tripod
socket?
I have the F*300/4.5 and it is a remarkably small lens.

 No, it's not heavy.

My desire for a tripod mount has more to do with the improved
 functionality
when shooting with a tripod/monopod (when I eventually get one :-).

I quite like the feature on the FA* 80-200mm f2.8 (Which is heavy does
 need it)

 Cheers,

 Dave

I agree that it doesn't have the same flexibility as a collar mount.
But next to useless is a little over the top. ;-)
