 Jos,

Here are few points that I find relevant:

 1. The price/quality and price/reliability ratio of DA* 16-50 is high.
Although I am not terribly bothered by the soft corners at wider
apertures and wider focal lengths, it is a bit unpleasant to look at
wide shots Galia and I took in our most recent trip to USA only to see
softness where ideally it ought to be sharp...

 2. I did not have any SDM troubles with my sample, *yet*. That is, I am
going to emphasize that specifically in my ad for it - no SDM issues
 whatsoever, *yet*.

 3. I might use a slightly longer reach for outdoor situations where
maximal aperture of f4.5 won't be that objectionable.

 4. Yes, the HSM OS lens is better on the paper. However in terms of
mechanical longevity the fact that it has the whole optical group
designed to be movable is not something I'd appreciate.

 5. I've just missed an opportunity to buy one such lens for USD 195
(plus shipping, taxes on my side, etc). So it is not very expensive.

I've been introduced to this lens by Jaume few years ago when we met
here. So I kind of know this lens and even then I remember I was quite
 surprised by it.

I hope my answer makes sense to you.

Re: WTB or trade

2012-11-17 Thread Jos from Holland

Boris,
I understand and agree with your reasoning.
I have also the Sigma 18-50/2.8, a very fine lens, but I'am using the
Sigma 17-70/2.8-4 as default lens for its longer range, I bought it as
new for 230 euro, I will not switch to the SDM -version for reliability
reasons (my general impression from the internet is that screwdriver
AF is, much, more reliable, or better longlivity as you say)
Hope you are and remain fine, every victim in this conflict is one too
much
