Accoirding to my reference, the Spotmatic F requires an EPX625 or EPX13.
These are mercury batteries. Funny, I don't recall that my years ago
SP-F used these. Is my reference sheet right?

 Hi Lewis,

This has been thoroughly covered many times before on this list, but
since I don't know what reference you are using, in looking at my
Spotmatic F factory-issued owner's manual, it says, on page 10, titled
Mercury Batteries -- For replacement, use Mallory PX-625 or Everady
 [sic] E-625N or equivalent.

While I cannot speak about any EPX batteries, from lack of personal
experience, the various alkaline batteries recommended earlier in this
thread are certainly okay for replacement use in the Spotty F.

A year or so ago, I found some mercury cells on the web and bought a
handful of them. Forget the URL, unfortunately. I have also used the
1.5 volt alkalines and observed no difference.

625 mercury cell, (3.5v), was original equipment. The Spotmatic F meter
is built so that you can directly
subistitute a 5 volt equivelent and get correct meter readings however.

I've seen a PX625N which is a perfect fit and 1.5 volts. I think it's a
lithium though, and some people have reported
problems using them, (lithium batteries in cameras that is). I'd prefer
silver oxide but I haven't seen any in that size.

Please read as follows:

625 mercury cell (1.35V) was original equipment. The Spotmatic F meter
is built so that you can directly substitute the original battery with a 1.5
volt
equivalent (or smaller, for proper housing inside the battery compartment)
and get correct meter readings however.

Yes - the 625 alkalines fit correctly but you can use the smaller 675. I just
use a bit of non-conductive padding to keep the smaller battery centered. Some
people use a small rubber O-ring to compensate for the smaller size.

By the way there's an excellent scan of the user manual at:
