Well, my Mac Mini photo computer is still ailing (taking it to the shop Monday), but I managed to find my pix for The Book on my backup drive. I like to think that by the time you decide your work needs large format, you are educated past that point. I predict that the present generation of photographers will be the last to use film, and that it will become essentially dead within 5 years. Now, do you feel this is for ALL aspects, for just for general use? Again, I like to hope that film will retain a certain appeal, and thus be produced, for the artists of the world while the general populace moves to digital for everything. The essentially dead part is the black and white niche market hanging on. Hopefully, it will stay large enough to keep a company afloat to make the stuff. Digital is still hobbled by 8 bit printing, which can wreak havoc on the look of the picture. According to one of the Noristsu people I have talked to, 16 bit is going to require a large increase in data tranfer rates to be viable. He was talking about bus speeds in the gigahertz range. So, does that mean that film, in roll and 35mm, will continue to hold onto some the higher levels for now until digital printing can further close its gap? Not if you can no longer get optical printing done. RA-4 is not a process that lends itself to home processing, and commercial processing is going 100% digital. I bet there are some good deals on large commercial processing machines out there right now though. Before anybody hawks a loogie at this, I see it every day in my lab. The pictures coming off the optical printer look better than those coming from film off the digital printer. Now, from a professional opinion, does this still hold true when comparing prints from a Frontier at a drug store versus an older optical printer from a drug store? I do need a place to send the occasional roll of colour 35mm film, and quite frankly, am happy paying bargain drug store prices for the initial 4x6s, then using the decent, expensive, lab to print any enlargments? I have the luxury of having a quite good optical machine, and a state of the art digital printer side by side. Both print on the same paper, and use the same chemistry. The chemical controls are even fairly close. The optical prints just look like they have more depth than the digital product. Same neg, printed on both mahines, almost always, the optical print looks better. Digital printing does have an advantage with either very long, or very short range negatives. Where digital is really weak (well, actually, totally useless, IMHO) is for black and white. There are not many good black and white options out there for getting from digital to print, and none of them match the qualities of a well made silver print. A certain part of me is very smug about this, and glad. For predominatly greedy interests, I hope it continues to be. My only concern going into the future and next half of my life is that BW film will continue to be produced, I've long ago given up colour pictures for nearly anything but fun, and I'm happy to let digital rule that domain. Whether this bodes well for black and white film is anyones guess. I hope it is. ...fingers crossed. Yup. William Robb
Re: Whew.
I kind of doubt that they only sold 700. Manufactured, maybe, since Medium Format is still produced using the old system of make a bunch and sell them from the warehouse. When the stock gets low run off a bunch more (maybe 700?). So if I was told that one company made one production run last year (the worse economy since 1981), I would believe that. However since you can no longer buy 120 film except in the big cities, or via mail order, the death knoll is tolling in the background. I can actually get 4x5 over at the university book store, but there is no where to get 120 in Boone since they closed the Ritz Camera last year. But then hardly anyone except pros and serious amateurs have used roll film in 20 years or so. And the pro studios bought it wholesale, not from a local store. So, not exactly a popular item, even before digital. -- gfen wrote: On Sat, 17 Apr 2004, frank theriault wrote: Pentax can't keep up with the demand for 67II's and 645N's Last year alone, all Japanese manufacurers combined sold around 700 medium format bodies, worldwide. Re: Whew.
Well, your comments certainly apply to consumer photography where they (mostly) can not tell an 8x10 contact print from a 1.2meg digital print. But then us older guys remember when Kodak made 4 different 35mm film emulsions and 20 different sheet film emulsions. So 4x5 and larger has been in that dismal state of affairs for a long time. However, as an already established niche market, I think sheet film will probably in the near future fair better than roll film. I gave my TLR away last year. It is hard in many areas to find some place that will process 4x5 BW at a reasonable price almost limiting it to folks who can set up a darkroom somewhere. This I do know from personal experience. -- William Robb wrote: - Original Message - From: gfen Subject: Re: Whew. Is 4x5 and larger also in such a dismal state of affairs? About a week ago I opened this folder up, today I just deleted 43,341 messages dating back to 8/8/03. I think I'm going to go ahead and begin partcipating, again. I realized in the 20 minutes of holding down the D key (yes, ys, I could've deleted the whole mail folder and saved a significant portion of my time, but that would've been like _cheating_ myself of the experience, would you believe for a minute I planned on actually looking at the titles of everything?!)... Where was I? Oh, yes, back. I think. I'd like to be. I'd like to focus on photography (har, har) again. I remember when I stopped taking photographs (uh, about the 8th of August, 2003...) because I had just moved to a Mac from a fifteen years of PC life (that OSX operates just like NeXTSTeP was too inticing), which in turn rendered my scanners useless (no drivers), which was hampered by the fact that my girlfriend was moving in which took up every available weekend to be used in cleaning up and fixing up the house. Yep. One thing to another, and in the end I haven't picked up a Pentax camera since.. Oh, sometime around August 8, 2003. :) Although, I hadn't left photography behind completely, I've ditched 4x5 in favour of 8x10 (work bonus+ebay=enablement in the shape of a BJ Commercial View) which, in turn, is going to make me start using my little Pentax cameras again.. First, there's nothing like picking up 40# bag filled with field camera, lenses, and film holders then having to find a place to lug another 8# of tripod to put that whole 645 kit into perspective. And an MX might as well be a subminature camera. Heh. Not to mention the talking to you get when you mention trying to bring it all on an airplane for vacation. :) So, hoping that with some coming free time I'll have some nice weather and maybe I'll actually get back around to taking photos again... So, looking forward to re-aqquainting with those who are still here, and meeting the new folks. Have there been any serious changes that I should be aware of in the last year? Where's the Pentax state-of-the-art these days? What's the future of the 645 and 67 platforms, were there ever digital products announced for them? How about the film bodies? Re: Whew....
Hi, Shaun, The temperature was just above freezing yesterday, and it started raining in the evening. The temperature dipped overnight, coating the ground with a thin layer of ice. Then, it snowed - not much, but just enough to coat the ice with snow, turning the streets and sidewalks into skating rinks by morning. The high today was -7. The low tonight will be -15. I'm sorry to hear about your heatwave. Really, I am... vbg Drink lots of beer and stay cool. Drinking lots of beer doesn't make things any warmer for us, but it makes the cold more bearable. cheers, frank (nearer the arctic circle than you) Shaun Canning wrote: None yet, but I was expecting a few from those nearer to the arctic circle than me :):):):) Cheers Shaun Mishka wrote: just curious, how many death threats have you received so far, since you've posted that here? best, mishka -- The optimist thinks this is the best of all possible worlds.
