The guy who was going to arrange for an engineer to get an estimate on raising
our rental unit a few feet so as to be above Flood Plain so that we can rebuild
the major damage caused by the wind-toppled 100-foot white pine? Some time this

The lady who was going to arrange our secondary internet connection so that our
niece Mary can re-establish her home office here now that she can’t live in the
damaged rental? Still waiting for a call back.

[Back story on the rental: our niece lives there. We lived with her 8 months
last year after our home was flooded. The pine tree blew over onto her house
Dec 11th. She’s moved in with us. Because we are in a flood plain, special
rules apply. The U.S. Government subsidizes the cost of flood insurance, and
communities that agree to FEMA’s rules are given more generous discounts on the
insurance. FEMA’s rules are designed to avoid constant rebuilding of structures
in jeopardy, like along the coast in the traditional path of hurricanes or in
known flood plains in the interior. Requirement is that the community will not
provide a building permit to any upgrade or repair unless either A- the cost of
the upgrade or repair does not exceed 50% of appraised value, or B- the
structure is brought up to current building code. So, above the flood plain,
with up-to-date wiring, etc. We will likely be well over 50% of appraised
value, and thus anticipate Option B is going to come into play. So the first
question is, how high do we need to raise the rebuilt/replaced structure?
Probably 3-4 feet. And meanwhile niece Mary has lost her home office. She works
for a hospital on medical insurance issues. Usually about 90% from home. But
because of the private sensitive nature of what she deals with, her home office
work computer cannot be WiFi, it needs a hardwire ethernet connection. Our
cable modem is at the other end of the house, so I am trying for a secondary
connection in “her” new office…]

So, waiting, waiting, frustrated at having so many of these details which are
just out of my control. I took the requisite shots of the tree down across the
house, of the crane lifting the pieces out, the guys nailing sheets of plywood
and tarps across the holes in the roof. But I can’t be too excited about any of
those shots. One of my occasional outlets is cooking, but that is harder with
Mary here. We get along well with Mary, we are comfortable with her in our
home. But she is still dealing with damage caused by her COVID over a year ago.
Loss of taste has now become distortion of taste, so there are a very limited
number of food options that she can tolerate. I could still make my sausage and
cheese breakfast casserole or my 3-meat 8-bean chili. But she wouldn’t be able
to eat those, might not even be able to tolerate the odor if she were in the
same room with those, and so it wouldn’t be right for me to indulge.

I am looking forward to getting some of these nuisance details out of the way!
And I am looking forward to some travel we have booked for 2022, some trips
just for relaxation, some trips (e.g. Iceland) for exploration and photo ops.
And hoping that we can zig-zag our way through the COVID restrictions and
outbreaks. While life has not been ideal for us lately, we have avoided serious
tragedy, I know that many of you are facing similar woes, and we are all ready
for a big party! Or something.

Meanwhile, Ho Ho Ho and serious best wishes for a healthy productive prosperous
New Year!

Y'a plus de saisons... There are no seasons anymore, as they say in France.

Current temp at 5.30 pm local is 10 deg c (50 F). There's a distinct air
mass boundary right across Germany with us on the warm side. Forecast
for the next days is cooler and rain, followed by springlike 15 degrees
for New Year's Eve.

Happy holidays to one and all. Thanks to everyone for the company and

Ann, I saw these mushrooms on a small less known path in the dunes.
Somebody must have taken them away as they were gone a few days later.
Usually I don't touch wild mushrooms and flowers for reasons of nature

Re: PESO - Christmas Greetings

2020-12-25 Thread Alan C

Many thanks, Henk.

You could have! We actually had cold salads with the chicken. Finished
off with Christmas pud & custard. Yummy!

It will be 48 hours without power at 9pm. We live in one of the older
town extensions. The 50 year old cables just can't carry the load any
more. The housing occupation density used to be about 5/house but the
"new" occupants have pushed it up to at least twice that. Repairing the
cables is only a temp. solution - they really need to replace them with
bigger ones. Electricians from the mines were called in to assist the
Muni. They were all sent home at 5pm, completely exhausted. We have
already used 30L petrol in the generator - doubles the cost of
electricity. Hopefully tomorrow.

We're in North Carolina. Been here since Thursday and returning
tomorrow, in fact. We stopped in at Grandfather Mountain today to say
hello to all the folks there. Plans are already moving ahead for Nature
Photography Weekend 2015. Did a short hike in the area and shot some
photos in the fog. Some of them might even be good. That's all I have to
report at the moment. Photos later...

Yeah - we're really laying into the cycle thing. I think the Olympics
really helped. Just on a day-to-day basis and in general, I see many
more cyclists out and about than I used to a couple of years ago. I'd
say up by at least 100% compared to then. That's a lot, which is great.
The downside is that there are a commensurate number of injuries and
fatalities on the roads with cyclists coming off worse, obviously. We
need more education about how to approach and safely overtake cyclists -
I see classic mistakes like not losing any speed during the overtake on
corners, and so when the motorist goes for the overtake and suddenly a
vehicle appears the other way, they've nowhere else to go except back
towards the cyclist.

My lad Stefan does some road races on his Giant and he's had some
heightened training with me WRT defensive cycling - as most car drivers
are ignorant and some downright dangerous, but sadly to survive as a
cyclist you MUST take the defensive attitude. When cyclists migrate up
to armoured troop carriers then they can simply sit back and count the
flat cars in the mirrors ;-)

For those that haven't seen it, I made this short film for him last year...

https://vimeo.com/user2607591/review/54601234/ae7554f597

3 mins with dreamy cycling content.

To be honest, he's got a ways to go to reach Sampras and Federer

Late and not so late greetings

2013-07-08 Thread Boris Liberman
Hello :-).

Happy birthday, United States of America... Hope our American friends
had wonderful long jubilant weekend.

Yesterday though, a bit of history was in the making. I hope that our
British friends do celebrate what Andy Murray has achieved on the
courts of Wimbledon. If I were British, I know, I would certainly be
celebrating...

Wishing us all only good news similar to those from yesterday.

Sometimes one must just indulge the arty side of photography and turn a
very good DSLR into a squinty blurry dream maker and turn out a photo
like this.

Consider this my Holiday Greetings for the PDML crew. Your gifts
throughout the year of opinions, stories, advise, shared photos are
worth the price of admission.
