Re: PESO: Bird of Paradise

2023-02-03 Thread ann sanfedele
I agree with Larry that a longer lens would be useful here so the
pebbles and rim on the planter are blurred out if you cant get an angle
where the
-bird- is against a background of only leaves.. I definitely would not
want a"plain black background" - I like the pattern the blossom against
the leaves make..
so the whole frame is considered..  a blossom against a solid
background  seldom works for me aesthetically..

The good thing is, that plant is one you see every day Dan, you can go
back to it and work it.. a cloudy day would be useful..

It's pretty as it is, though.

Lovely flower, I wish that it were better separated from the background.

If I were shooting it, and couldn’t arrange to have a simple black background
behind it, I would try and do some sort of Rembrandt lighting on it, either
with a speed light when there was less background light, or even just some sort
of hot light at night from the side so that the leaves behind the flower were
not illuminated. Possibly doing something fancy to shade the leaves and use a
mirror or reflector to put more sunlight on the flower.

Another thing that might help is to use a longer lens and move back so that
there is a lot less background visible, so that more of the background were
something darker that contrasts more with the flower (like the leaves in shadow
rather than sunlight concrete)

A beautiful flower! Following up on Larry's comment, what might help a lot
is a radial filter in lightroom to darken the background and lighten the
flower. Or use the post-crop vignetting slider.

Very nice capture, Dan. Good to see a bit of SA! That particular flower,
known to gardeners world wide as the "Bird of Paradise", is the South
African indigenous species Strelitzia Reginae.

I think this is some kind of warbler. Can’t find an exact match on the web,
but some Warblers are close. Shot these handheld, sitting on my bench with
the K-1 and 150-450. Never saw one that I can recall. Could be migratory.
Didn’t hang around long. Any opinions?

Lee and I will NOT be able to make it Saturday. I was very interested in
joining the group, and meeting some more PDMLers face-to-face, but I had
forgotten a previous commitment we had made. We are flying out tomorrow to
Santa Fe to meet with a group of my college classmates for a joint 75th
birthday celebration at a resort out their. We will be wining and dining,
of course, and talking about the good old days, but also making some
excursions to native American sites and to the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum.

I will be thinking of you all. Have a grand gathering!

By the way: If any of you reading this ever find yourselves near
Warren, Ohio (and I can't think of anything that might occasion such
circumstances, short of some terrible misfortune involving a brief
discontinuity in the fabric of space-time) you should definitely stop
by the National Packard Museum. Small but packed with great stuff – I
expect they have a warehouse somewhere where they keep cars that
aren't on display because they seem to be rotating cars through the
museum continually. Friendly, helpful people working there, too.

I only know of the place because I taught at nearby Youngstown State
University for a few years. And it's pretty close to the Nelson Ledges
Road Course where I frequently raced motorcycles many years before
that.

Ken, I don't think the background is too awful. The lighter colored part
is almost elegant. I did think the black box could be minimized by
cropping tighter on top. I know it crowds the wingtips but it does turn
the black box into smaller black strip which echo the lower part of the
photo. BTW I too like to photo hood ornaments at car shows so enjoyed
seeing this one from you.

Re: PESO: Bird on the wing

2014-08-18 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Yes. The little guy was moving quickly, and bouncing around a bit. I
was varying the shutter speed, and so the aperture, to try to get the
bird in focus while still avoiding motion blurt. In this case, I
obviously went to far towards maximizing DoF, at the expense of
shutter speed, and the result is quite a bit of motion blur.
Never-the-less, I like the effect here, showing the wing motion yet
still catching the little white item in the bird's beak. For me, the
wing shadow ties it together.

I didn't actually plan this result, but sometimes serendipity trumps planning.

Re: PESO: Bird Feeder

2013-03-07 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Don. I refer to them as "beach photography."

I must relocate my bird feeders this year. They have increasingly
come under attack by the local deer herds. When the deer invade our
property, not only do they make a mess of the feeders and the
shrubbery, but they taunt my dog, and induce him to chase them into
the woods, which is undesirable. I need to move them away from the
house and pool, except of course for the hummingbird feeders, which I
keep as close as possible. This is the year I will finally capture an
image of one of those sneaky devils!

I was thinking about unmounting the glass and framing it for sale. Should be

Of course Sasha, given the contrast difference, you could probably
move this bird using PS. I don't like doing that myself, but it would
be a fun exercise.

A nice photo. If only the bird was a tad more to the left.

Re: peso: bird

2011-04-19 Thread Steven Desjardins
A nice shot. Not ideal, but the dark bird against the watercolor
blues and greens still makes a nice contrast. What lens?

Re: peso: bird

2011-04-19 Thread Bob Sullivan
Sasha,
Wish the bird was bigger, and flying INTO the picture
rather than OUT OF it. (more space on the right than left)
And you caught him positioned on the line of the hill on shore.
It is a distraction.
