Good choice!

I have been driving one for a year and a half now,
after having had a 6-gear Celica for over 5 years :-)

I really like it, and with a mix of arround town / highway
I do an avarage of 53 mpg (4.3 ltr/100km) in the summer.
(In the European winters it takes almost 10% more!)

Note that my average cruising speed is between
55 and 60 miles or 90 km on the highway :-)

Driving it is really comfortable and relaxing!

I have been using it for years in my own data-recovery tool:

mine to monochrome ...

Must have been a popular subject that day :-)
Here is mine (warning: about 300Kb in size):

This is taken arround midnight on the 7th/8th, near Amsterdam ...

A* 300mm 2.8 + 2x-L + 1.7x AF converter (1020mm total)

The Manfrotto carbion tripod this was mounted on

That is most likely because most TIFF files already apply
lossless compression. TIFF is just a container format, and
it does offer the possibility of compressing the contents.

I know Photoshop offers this as an option when saving as TIFF ...
They probably use a Lempel-Zif compression, much like ZIP.

>Others have also reported similar results. Are you able to compress

If you save an inage as UNCOMPRESSED TIFF from Photoshop,
e regular ZIP will be able to compress it down, taking perhaps upto
40% of the size off (heavily depending on image content/detail :-)

>Umm, not being an electrical engineer, physicist or mathematician, it's all

Well I am (an electrical engineer :-) and there ARE some
interesting figures in there:

 - Saturation signal: 40K electrons

Meaning THIS particular sensor will saturate a well (one pixel)
when it has a charge of about 4 electrons.
This would be the maximum WHITE level to be recorded.

 - Quantum efficiency, about 0.33

Meaning you need an average of 3 photons (light :-) to
get a single electron added to the charge of the pixel.
(meaning about 12 photons to reach saturation)

 - Total sensor noise: 17 electrons

Meaning the noise from the sensor alone is 1 / 2350 of the
saturation level, which is just over 11 stops in range ...
This is the major factor in setting the minimum recordable
light levels (BLACK), but I am unsure how close you could
put it to get reasonable noise levels. You probably need
to be several stops ABOVE this point to have acceptable
shadow detail left ...

And the rest of the electronics will add some noise too.

Of course this is just ONE sensor, from KODAK, and the values
may not be representative for the ones in Pentax cameras :-)
But it IS nearly the same technology ...

I can remember the discussions back when the PZ lenses

different 'style' of contacts is that the ones on the

There is also the issue of those contacts being shorted

Ah, I see.

With the 360 it opens almost completely, perhaps 5 degrees short.

You could get it to extend fully if you file half a milimeter from the
360 mount :-) But it works this way too, so I did not need to.

I have the 21mm, and also have server film bodies left.

There is just one with film loaded at the moment though.

I will take it with me this week on some trips and make

I have tested it previously on the viewfinder of my MX,

Just made some shots with the MZ-S (that also had file loaded :-)

I have the Pentax FA 50mm f/2.8 and A* 200mm macro lenses
and the Sigma 100mm f/2.8 EX autofocus macro lens.

While the build of the Pentaxes is better, the Sigma works
great too, image quality is fine, lots of contrast too.

The only thing I do not like about the Sigma is the
mechanism to switch between MF and AF, it is a clutch
built into the focussing ring (like the FA* lenses have)
but operation is too smooth. Just picking up the lens
from a camerabag will often change the setting.

Otherwise it is a great performer!

I have been using it a lot on the PZ1 and the MZ-S.

I also use it on the *ISTD, but prefer the 50mm in more
shots than with the film cameras. (75mm equivalent).

Don't blame the format, blame the tool!

Yes, it does for me.
I found I can get very acceptable images from RAW images within a range
of 1 stop UNDER-exposure to about half a stop OVER-exposure.

When shooting JPG (or TIFF) that margin is much smaller ...

>Am I missing something here? Have you found a good RAW converter, also
>allowing color balance (unlike the Genzo)? Joe (and other folks doing the

Yes, I use the Photoshop-CS RAW converter which is really superb.
The only disadvantage is that it is expensive (about US$ 700 I think)

I am using one 512Mb and two 1Gb cards with the *ISTD at the moment,
which gives me a total of about 175 RAW images.
This almost always enough for 1 day shooting, after which I transfer
the images to a laptop.

If I need more, I can always switch to JPG ...

Umm, actually you should hope they DO move inside the case,
otherwise you might as well pack them in a concrete block :-)

The whole point is to allow some movement of the gear when
the case is suddenly accelerated or stopped, reducing the
G-forces on the stuff more or less freely moving in the foam ...

The ideal case would be if the foam compresses up to the point that
the gear ALMOST hits the case shell.

Indeed, compression would have been an advantage to save card space.

Being uncompressed, it is much less attractive, the only remaining point
is RAW converters being able to handle it without a software update ...

I would still convert (either PEF or out-of-camera DNG) to
a compressed DNG however, to save space in my archives,
and to keep all post-processing info IN that same DNG file ...
(not in a database or 'sidecar' files :-)

BTW:
I played with that leaked RAW DNG file from the Samsung
camera at Photokina, which is almost 17Mb in size.

It can be handled fine with Adobe Camera RAW, and feeding it through
the DNG converter results in a 9Mb DNG that also works fine ...

Ah, there is the mixup then, I was there on Wednesday the 27th,
at the Pentax booth a few times, including 14:00 for an hour.
You must have missed or misread my final travel plans ...

Never mind, would have been nice to meet you in person though.
(stil have your nice Pentax poster hanging next to my equipment :-)

Overwhelming amount of information to be had at photokina.
We did just a dozen or so stands proper, and briefly browsed
over a few more. I am sure we did see much less than half
of what was out there :-)

Just started experimenting with this feature about two weeks back,
shooting an indoor scene with a light-bulb in it :-)

It does work reasonably well, but I found it hard to get a
natural looking end result with enough detail in all areas ...
Of course the dynamic range in these shots was rather extreme.

This is using the 'combine as HDR' feature from the browser,
which uses a few actions in PS2 to do the work.

I may want to play with doing it manually as well,
to get a better feel with the involved manipulations.

>I'm going to try some of this in the coming week on images I intend to

I want to try using it on a HDR shot of a half-moon,
see if I can include some 'dark side' :-)

OK, as you may have noticed, I have put up a few more.
This time without the flash, using a tripod:

Yes, at the nomal ('fit screen') size there is moire caused by
the monitor or simple resizing algorithm in the browser.
(this is luminance moire, all channels)

However, at 1:1 (100%) size that moire is gone, but there is
a very subtle COLOR moire left (not luninance), it shows
best between her hair and the right arm ...

I am straying away from them too, allthough the EX 105 macro
and the 70-200mm 2.8 never caused problems and deliver
good images ...

Quality control and differences between lenses seems to
be a problem for Sigma.

Agree ...

Well, I got one of those last year, as 'one in all' travel lens.
While the optical qualtity is not that bad (soft at the long end as expected)
I am mainly dissapointed in the AF behaviour of the lens.

On my *istD it has severe problems to get good focus and
often just keeps hunting, or does not react at all!

That may partly be because of the low contrast and f/6.3 aperture
at the long end. (but the problems are at the wide end too).

I have this lens for sale now (225 Euros :-) and got the Samsung 50-200mm
instead (just 149 Euros) which does a lot better sofar (just got it this week).

The Samsung does appear to have SMC coating BTW.
No scientific tests, just judging from the glass reflections :-)

Since everything I read about these lenses sofar convinced
me that these are EXACT rebadges of the Pentax DA ones.

The Samsung was 149 Euro, the Pentax 229 at the same shop.
(Pentax can be had for 199 elsewhere I think)

So price mainly, I also like to have one exotic one
in the collection with a blue ring instead of green :-)
