Dear all,

Firstly, thank you to those who have already completed our survey regarding
‘Food Management in Institutions’. We’ve had 230 responses which is amazing so
thank you! If you have not yet filled it out (or have started but not completed
it) please do not delay, your input is crucial to the success of this project.
Please feel free to forward it to anyone you think might have an interest in
the project, we are eager to reach as many institutions as possible. The
deadline is June 1 st 2014.

The survey can be found at:
http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/1552943/SPNHC-Survey-Food-in-Institutions

As we are also trying to reach a more international audience, we would
appreciate it if you could please forward to me the names of any other
international groups for Museums, Libraries or Archives, or Conservators,
Curators and Registrars. Even groups for those in private practice. We’re keen
to get further involvement from Europe, Asia and Australia. Any recommendations
or ideas can be sent to ‘ bgpalu...@hotmail.co.uk ’.

With many thanks,

Bethany Palumbo and Rebecca Newberry (on behalf of the SPNHC Conservation
Committee)

Subject: SPNHC Food Management in Institutions survey

Dear all,

Museums, people and food are closely tied together. From staff members’ brown
bag lunches to the cafeteria to a catered donor event, food service is a
necessity in modern museums and institutions. At the most basic level, food
vendors feed visitors and generate revenue. A strong partnership between
museums and food vendors nourishes people and the delivery of the museum’s
mission. The focus on healthy, sustainable nutrition also fits well into the
educational mission of the museum field.

On the other hand, the presence of food in the museum presents a challenge to
the long-term preservation of museum collections. The risk of pest infestation
and soiling of collections is real. Incorrect disposal of food waste and
insufficient house-keeping both contribute to pest infestation while food and
beverages carried through areas with collections can spill and soil objects,
causing damage which may not be reversible.

On behalf of the SPNHC Conservation Committee, we feel that there is currently
a lack of documented recommendations in regards to food management within
museums. Through international collaboration, we hope to create a set of
guidelines that institutions can use to protect vulnerable collections while
supporting food services. We have put together a questionnaire (with many
thanks to Cathy Hawks) to help us gauge an understanding of the current
condition of food management within museums and institutions on an
international scale.

We would be extremely grateful if you could fill out the following
questionnaire before June 1st 2014 . Your input is integral to the success of
this project.

It certainly looks like the larval form of R. vespulae .  Do you use cornmeal
in preparing your skins?  This is an attractant for grain beetles as well. At
my former museum we were able to significantly reduce our infestations by
eliminating the use of corn meal.  I believe our preparatory used borax instead
– but would have to check on that detail.

Nice photo by the way.

Greetings,

A few years ago I had an infestation of Reesa vespulae in my cornmeal (all
adults).  Today I found this (live) larva in the bird skin teaching collection.

http://www.humboldt.edu/wildmuseum/larva.html

Is this also a Reesa?

Many thanks!

Hi everyone,

These tiny things just started showing up in my sticky traps.  Any idea what
they may be?  They are lightly over a mm long, have 6 legs, an elongated thorax
and maybe clubbed antenna.  I hope the picture will help.  They were the best I
could do.  Please ignore the other flotsam in the pictures.  Thanks so much.

Hello,

I am the manager of a collection of about 10,000 pieces of vintage clothing
(mostly wool and fur/leather) that are infested with moths. I am looking into
the possibility of a low temperature treatment (freezing) of the collection in
the NYC area. Freezing the collection will definitely be time consuming and
expensive, although I believe it is possible. That said, it is a "working"
collection, meaning the vintage is used as reference material and in heavy
circulation (like a library book); e.g. constantly being handled by people all
day without gloves. Because so many people rely on it on a daily basis, I am
getting pressure from above to fumigate the entire thing. The fumigant the
exterminator would like to use is Vikane, and then they would like to clean the
entire collection room with Talstar P.

My questions to you all are:

· Will Vikane cause damage or change the appearance of the collection?
(I know that it likely will, especially because of the wool, but wanted to
double check)

· Is it safe to fumigate the clothing with Vikane and then return the
items to immediate handling by people?

· Is it safe for me to be handling a collection on a daily basis (50
hrs/week) that has been fumigated with Vikane?

· Is Talstar P a good choice for cleaning the shelving, walls, nooks
and crannies with?

· Is it safe for me to be confined in a room with poor ventilation
that has just been treated with Talstar P?

I have read the MSDS sheets for the chemicals and the JAIC article about Vikane
from 1990, but still feel uneasy about the toxicity of the fumigants/pesticides
that they would like to use. I want to be armed with as much information as
possible to make this decision.

I know this is a lot to ask all at once, and thank you all in advance for any
advice you can offer.

Best regards,

Nicole

Hi all,
we found two of these larvae crawling in our object stores.  Their body

light in color to be Attagenus.  Ideas?

Hello all -

I'm am setting up digest capabilities for this list. Digest mode (and it is
optional by user) will save the emails that have come in over a certain period
and then mail them to you all at once. If the period is set to one day, all
emails coming in that day would be sent to you at one time at the end of the
day.

I can set the digest period and the send time. Digest period options are:
daily, weekly, bi-weekly or monthly.

If you think you'd like to use the digest mode, please let me know which period
you would prefer - I can only set it to one.

Re: [pestlist] Treatment for bedbugs found in bound materials

2010-10-06 Thread Rebecca Newberry

I asked my pest control contractor (who could finance a vacation home with all
of the bed bug work he's been doing) about bed bugs and books.  He's heard
anecdotal evidence of bed bugs harboring and laying eggs in books found near
beds.  For example, if there is a bookshelf located in a bedroom and the
infestation is heavy, the bedbugs may find their way to the books.  The chance
of circulating library books becoming infested would be less likely since they
don't spend a long time in anyone's house.

He's a fan of heat treatments as well.  They heat to 140F, aiming to ensure
that the materials will heat to 120F at their core.  His company, Adam's Pest
Control,  has portable heaters and generators and is capable of treating whole
buildings.  There may be something similar in your area.

Good luck,

Subject: [pestlist] Treatment for bedbugs found in bound materials

Colleagues,

I am trying to work on a procedure for treating bound paper materials that
have bedbugs.  We haven’t had any confirmed sightings yet in materials, but
considering our State-wide problem I fear it is just a matter of time.  I've
seen plenty of good information related to facilities, but not a lot related to
caring for books that have been affected.  The most common quick quip is that
they should be "cooked" at temperatures around 140 degrees Fahrenheit for 2
hours.  I've not seen any indication what they are being cooked in.  There is a
device called Packtite that gets some mention on blogs, but not on any
conservation/preservation sites.  NEDCC, LOC, and Lyrasis sites don't have
anything yet either.  From what I’ve read freezing apparently doesn’t kill the
egg stage.  My concern right now is the general circulating collection, so
freezing might be the only option for rare/unique materials….

Has your institution started tackling this question?  Any help would be
appreciated!

[pestlist] Lethal temps for Red Legged Ham Beetles

2009-04-13 Thread Rebecca Newberry
Has anyone done any research into lethal temperatures for red legged ham beetles Necrobia rufipes?

I have Tom Strang's fatal temperature list and these guys are not on it unfortunately.  I am especially interested in the high lethal temperature.

Thanks!
Rebecca

Re: [pestlist] beetle problem

2008-08-21 Thread Rebecca Newberry

I would agree with Louis.  It sort of looks like a minute brown scavenger.
They feed on fungus and are often found in new structures, near wood with a
high moisture content.  I'd look for moisture in your galleries--maybe from a
new exhibit component?

Good luck!

---Pictures are kind of
fuzzy, but not drugstore beetle (wrong family, too) &
not sure of size, but looks like Corticaria pubescens (a latridiid).
Maybe someone else can hazard a guess.
