RE: [GENERAL] Outer joins
Title: RE: [GENERAL] Outer joins Postgres 7.1 does support Left, right outer joins. Functions are similar to stored procedures but they cannot return rows. I think that this limitation is being worked on for the next release (7.2). By the way should there be a 'Postgres Features' page on the website. This would save a large amount of these queries and reduce the amount of e-mails on this list. I'm sure that lots of interest is being raised because of the 'Redhat Database' Announcement. Some of these people will just want to know what Postgres is capable of. I searched all the pgsql mailing list (and the internet) to find if there is a dbexpress driver or some way to get pgsql into Borland Kylix. RE: [GENERAL] Starting postgresql on startup
Title: RE: [GENERAL] Starting postgresql on startup 'linuxconf' on Mandrake 7.1 should be able to set postgres to run at boot time as long as you set Postgresql up from an rpm. If you got to 'Control Panel' - 'Control service activity' - 'postgresql'. Set Startup to automatic and select the run levels you want Postgresql to run in, usually 3 5. If you compiled Postgresql from source then I think there is a script in /contrib (There is in 7.1 Beta :-) ) which sets-up an rc script. This should then make postgresql available in linuxconf. RE: [GENERAL] Re: ALTER DROP COLUMN
Is there any chance of adding a note about this to the docs? It does not seem to be documented anywhere! Maybe a note in ALTER TABLE (sql-altertable.htm) and changing the FAQ slightly to mention what happen to triggers, views, constraints etc. Regards Ben -Original Message- From: Fred Yankowski [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: 12 February 2001 21:41 Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [GENERAL] Re: ALTER DROP COLUMN I just tried this recommended procedure with a little test. It copied over the Attribute and Type information and the primary key index, but left everything else behind: not-null constraints, defaults, references constraints, check constraints, sequence generated for 'serial' type -- to name a few. So how is this useful for anything beyond a toy database? This inability to drop a column makes it hard to follow an "extreme programming" style of development, where one designs only as much into the database schema as is needed at the moment (DTSTTCPW, YAGNI). When I do that I often find that I need to drop columns (in favor of other columns of different types) as I evolve the schema to support ever more complex applications. PostgreSQL makes this a bit harder than it needs to be. On Mon, Feb 12, 2001 at 12:34:20PM -0800, Brent R. Matzelle wrote: I know it's a pain, but it isn't all that bad. I was creating a rule on a view and was wondering if there was a way to look at the rule definition once it has been saved? I envision myself creating a few rules here and there but if I move off this DB project and someone else takes over I would like them to have a way to see what I did. I was able to figure out that all the rules for a particular DB are stored in the pg_rewrite table but that seems almost unreadable for a human. What I would like is a command that spits out the create syntax I used when the rule was first created. On that same line of thinking, is there a command to get a list of all rules that have been put on a table? I guess if all else fails I will just have to pull up a good old text editor and detail exactly what rules I build in. Thanks, Josh Goodman

Or perhaps you'd turned off pg_shadow's usecatupd for yourself? I get this behavior: play= update pg_attribute set attnotnull = 't' where attrelid = 334893 and play- attname = 'f1'; ERROR: pg_attribute: Permission denied. play= \c - postgres You are now connected as new user postgres. play=# update pg_attribute set attnotnull = 't' where attrelid = 334893 and play-# attname = 'f1'; UPDATE 1 play=# Or can you only change attnotnull to false i.e. remove a not null constraint? I suppose this would make some kind of sense, as there could already be Nulls in the field. It's up to you to worry about that sort of consistency issue if you reach in and hack pg_attribute directly. Certainly the permission check is not concerned with it. regards, tom lane
