Re: [Phono-L] Partly OT, Victor Theremin site

2012-03-04 Thread Jim Nichol
This is so cool! I own a Moog Theremin 91A (which is very close in appearance
to an RCA model). I only looked at your website for a few seconds before I
found that Theremins were made for RCA by both GE and Westinghouse. I don't
know why that never occurred to me before, since I knew RCA was based on those
two companies. I worked for GE for 37 years, but of course, Theremins were
never mentioned.

Believe it or not.. When I was living in Guam, the local Ace Hardware carried
piano string wire that I could use for restringing pianos! And our local Ace
in Denver used to carry all kinds of wierd stuff. Now that they have been
acquired by the corporate office, the selection is no better than the other
hardware stores. So much for corporate ownership of local small businesses!

Re: [Phono-L] Partly OT, Victor Theremin site

2012-03-04 Thread Greg Bogantz
Hi Andrew, You may or may not know that Dr. Robert Moog, the inventor
of the Moog synthesizer, started his career as a consequence of his
fascination with the original RCA theremin. He started restoring them, then
he decided to make new ones. One thing led to another, and the Moog Music
company was formed. Today, Moog Music is alive, well, and thriving in
Asheville, NC (my stomping grounds). They are still restoring original
theremins as well as making and selling new ones, in addition to all their
newer synthesizer equipment. A lot of musicians descend on Asheville to
visit Moog Music and play with their toys. Asheville started a music
gathering called "Moogfest" two years ago which is a celebration of all
things Moog. It's been a huge success, and more are in the planning stages.
You might want to contact Moog or one of their websites to spread the news
of your website. Lots of musicians and others interested in the theremin
should see your postings there. Here's the scoop on Moogfest. Another one
will probably be scheduled this year around October:

rcatheremin.com

For those who may be interested, here you will find practical but
heretofore unavailable information about the original 1929 theremins, the
first manufactured musical instrument to employ no acoustic or mechanical
means of reproducing of sound. In Victor advertising, it was stated: "Not
a phonograph---Not a radio---Not like anything you have ever heard or
seen!"

There are Victor records of this unique first electronic musical
instrument that date from 1930 (Victor 25130 is one that some of you may
have seen), and the instrument itself (which is played without touching
it) was developed during the time that RCA was busy acquiring the Victor
Talking Machine Company.

If any of you own or know of someone who has one of these original Victor
Theremins, please let me know about it, as we are actively researching the
survivors. Both Mike and I own RCA theremins, and are not in the market
to buy, but rather are more interested in documenting the survivors and
sharing what we've learned about these rare and unusual instruments.

Allen,The original bidder placed an automatic proxy bid for $1,000. The second
guy, who apparently is not knowledgeable at all, kept bidding against the proxy
bid until his bid exceeded $1,000. So, it appeared that he was bidding against
himself, but in actuality he was bidding against an already placed automatic
bid. Luckily for the first bidder, the second guy outbid his ridiculous proxy
bid.Curt

Re: [Phono-L] eBay Shilling??

2012-03-04 Thread Jim Nichol
You often see auctions with only one bidder, who is bidding against himself.
In reality, he is bidding against the reserve price, since he doesn't know its
amount.

Re: [Phono-L] Edison Standard A versus B Model

2012-03-04 Thread clockworkhome

Greetings Bill:

I believe you have a B motor in an A cabinet. It is essentially the same motor
so it can be swapped between the two models. The difference was the threaded
crank on the B and the B had a short knurled screw for the speed knob. The
threaded hole for the speed control is identical to both. The rubber grommets
of the A and springs of the B both fit the mounting holes on the motor frame.
When ICS B Standards were made they simply put a hole in the bedplate for the
longer speed control shaft of the Standard A. The Standard B made for ICS was
the only ones that should have the hole and above the bedplate speed knob.

Edison went to the Standard B Model around serial 245000. If your machine were
just before that I might suggest that it was factory installed but at 178813
that is way too early for a threaded crank. It very much sounds like a kitchen
table conglomerate which Edison machines are prone to. I always ask for the
motor number when Triumphs are on eBay. Often I find a nice Model A Triumph
with a much later motor *and* with a screw on crank, not the square drive. For
many years it was easier for slap dash repairmen to simply swap out motors
rather than repair the broken spring, another example of interchangeable parts
on Edison machines being a positive and a negative together. In most every
case the machine is advertised as 'unmolested' or some other term to indicate
it is all original. With Edison you have to sometimes give a closer look to be
sure.

Regards,

Al

Re: [Phono-L] eBay Shilling??

2012-03-04 Thread Merle Sprinzen
Two possible ways to get a long series from the same bidder. In one
scenario, there is a higher bidder, and the new bidder keeps entering higher
and higher bids to try to outbid that higher bidder. In the second
scenario, a bidder enters one bid and then enters several others so as to
increase his original bid. You won't see any of those later bids until a
higher bidder enters the auction, and then all the other bids the first
bidder entered will appear that are up to the higher bidder, and one bid (if
one was entered) that exceeds the higher bidder.

Sounds like a marriage of an A case and B motor except for the speed control.
Maybe the winding shaft was replaced?? I'd like to see pics!
