Names like The Sound Box seemed too much like a cliché that fell far short

name

I am posting this to both Phonolist and Phono-L -- the two listserves I
subscribe to.
Those of you who belong to the Antique Phonograph Sovciety (formerly known
as the Calif. APS) should have received a letter in the mail this week (or
will shortly -- mine came yesterday) detailing the proposed merger of the
APS with MAPS effective January 1, 2014, (I'm guessing MAPS members will
get
something soon.). I was told that there was a preliminary meeting of
members held at the Union show lat month, though no mention was made in any

reports of the show on either of these lists. So the mailing from CAPS was
the
first formal document I saw.
As outlined in the letter, the two organizations are often serving the
same group with 160 members (of MAPS' 607 and APS's 400 members belonging
to
both. Economically it makes sense because postage to mail each society's
magazine/journal is the biggest cost. By combining memberships, there would

be one dues and this might attract more members. (Side note here: Every
person on these newsgroups should belong to at least one of these
organizations to support the hobby.).
The plan is to take the best of both magazines and combine into one.
Currently APS's magazine focuses on pre-electric phonographs and and some
recordings -- mostly pre-1910 -- while ITG (MAPs' magazine) covers recording
artists as well as reissues of pre-Lp era recordings. (As most of you know,
I
have contributed a monthly -- now bi-monthly -- column, Anything
Phonographic
to ITG for over 20 years , not missing one issue yet!).
I definitely support the merger if it will mean continuing the great
volunteer work done by the Boards and contributors of both organizations.
But --
as I wrote in a letter to both boards yesterday -- I feel that the proposal
to make the name of the new society's publication -- which would be
published quarterly with more yearly pages than either has now -- The
Antique
Phonograph is not a good move. Personally I do not feel that it reflects
the
contents if, in fact, the content will be similar to that in the current
ITG. In The Groove was named 30 years ago by John Whitacre and I have
worked with all four of its Editors during that time. It was chosen because
it
reflected phonographs (I don't call them antique phonographs because RCA
45 players from the 1950s are now considered antiques) and records. It
was a brand that no one was using and has a history. The name The
Antique Phonograph would imply that the publication was only for machine
collectors. I know some of you -- and many who write me about my column --
may
only have one or two windups but love old records and play them
electrically or buy reissues on CDs.
The reason for this (rather lengthy post) is to say that I plan to vote
for the merger (the ballots are due by August 7th and I'll be on vacation
for
a short time before then ) but I am planning to note that, as a member, I
feel the surviving magazine should be named In The Groove , maintaining
its 30 year history. (BTW, RCA has an consumer newsletter covering their
phonographs and records in the 1940s with the same name!). I encourage you
to
cast your vote to support the boards, but, if you feel as strongly about
the change of the magazine's name as I do, I urge you to contact the
combined Board Members of both organizations and let them know your
preferences,
WHATEVER they may be.

Her bisque head has no cracks and is stamped 224 on the back. She has all four

head. Her arms and legs are wood/composite and appear to have been restrung at
some point. She is missing a few fingers and one of her big toes. We think we
can easily remake these but don't want to over restore her. She has what
appears to be a very old, if not original, wig and what looks to be newer doll
clothes.

We have read a lot about these dolls online to learn about their history.
However, we are not sure if replacement phonographs, original and/or repros,
still exist in the market. We would like to restore her to as original

and what should be left alone. We have many pictures available to anyone who is
interested.

Thanks so much!

Since The Victor III started out as the Victor M (Monarch) model in 1901,
and then was transitioned to Victor III nomenclature around 1905 when the
tapered arm was first used, and there was some overlap in production with
the M Model series, there could have been some use of parts from the earlier
Monarch used on your machine, especially since your machine has and early 4
digit serial number, and a very early bottom sticker date from 1902, which
you would expect to find on the earliest of the III models which had a rigid
arm and concert sound box, and forward positioned crank. This is extremely
interesting. That horn is still a mystery, since it does not match up at all
to any that Victor was producing for any of its machines at the time, but it
fits perfectly into the elbow intended for your Victor III. It is somewhat
similar to the round pedaled horns used on the Victor O, but much larger in
length and horn opening. Hopefully someone can identify that horn, the
maker, and
whether it was from a separate Company that made the horns.

I've just acquired a machine with a plate that reads Type Vic III with
serial number 8212 and am wondering if I have got a frankenphono or maybe a
machine in transition. It has a slotted winding shaft but it is located to
the rear of the case. I'm sure the crank has been fudged. It is tubular
an tapered but the down part is not parallel to the side of the case and
the wall thickness of the slot end is thicker than that of my Vic Type 6
crank (which fits the III perfectly, BTW). The escutcheon is just a flat
plate with two screw holes and a rather large center hole that matches the
case hole. I have not found a plugged hole to indicate that a new crank
hole has been made either. There are no extra holes in the motorboard.
The motor is a Victor motor. It has lead gov. weights. Cabinet size is in
the right range. I thought that the reproducer was an early one but even
that is in doubt. It had the flat end balance springs and the round needle
chuck but the needle chuck has solder showing where it attaches to the rest
of the needle bar. It could have been swapped from another reproducer
although I don't know why the whole needle bar would not have been used.
jamb nuts are the earlier round, grooved edge type rather than nuts. The
horn seems to fit correctly, has a rivet and bayonets into the elbow. It is
petaled and appears to be brass. Oh, and one last clue, the antiques
dealer mentioned that the previous owner had lots of machines and many of
them were sold at auction. She acquired it last May along with a Victrola
IX which I did not inspect.

What are the thoughts of our listmates on this one?

Basically, handlining involves using lead weights and wire line too

heavy to

use with conventional fishing tackle to get lures down in conditions

where

water flow and radically varying depths conspire to frustrate common
slow-trolling techniques. It's a tactic pioneered by self proclaimed

river

rats fishing for walleyes forced by the current to hug the bottom
as

they

migrate through the Detroit River each spring. Early anglers
actually pirated parts from vintage, hand-cranked Victorola
phonograph players to construct reels capable of handling the wire
line and the weights the slow-trolling technique required.

The trolling motor has nothing to do with powering a boat, as I

thought it

did at first. It is just a way to reel in/out a heavy line and weights.
They mounted them off the sides of the boat and for al I know,
probably

were

propelling the boat with oars.

I would expect that if you put a good soundbox on it, an HMV or Victor
Exhibition, Victrola no. 2 or 4, or any decent generic mica-diaphragmmed piece,
the machine would actually sound pretty fair - better than most portables, for
instance, as at least you've got an external horn. With the portable motor, you
might even be able to put in a stronger spring in the barrel and you'd have
even more functionality. P. Carli

Yes, I bought one years ago. It had a very attractive case and just looked
cool. I paid about $50.00 for it. Mine, too, sounds halfway decent. I'm sure
I'll get a lot of flack for this, but I consider them to be a part of the
history of phonographs.

Anyone on the list ever knowingly buy a Crap-O-Phone? As in...on purpose?

Fess up. :-)

Ok.

I'll be first.

Years ago, I saw an octagonal cased crap-o-phone that I thought was kind of
cool looking. Someone from this list or the Phonolist said that they would
order a bunch of them and the price was reasonable, as I recall.

So I bought one. It had the usual portable motor and turntable, petaled brass
horn and the usual cobbled tone arm and reproducer. Not a bad sounding
reproducer, either. I still have it and I point out to visitors that these
things are still being made, albeit poorly.

Anyone else ever buy one and if so, why?

Re: [Phono-L] Edison 11 panel cygnet horn

2012-09-15 Thread Paul Christenzen

Care to share with us what it went for?

clockworkh...@aol.com wrote:

They are more scarce since they were made in smaller numbers than the #10
Cygnet. This should translate to higher prices with one caveat. The #11 was
really for the Triumph D2. You could put it on an E, F, or G Triumph if you
didn't have the original Music Master Wood Cygnet Horn. When converting an
earlier A, B, or C Triumph to 2 and 4 minute operation, the #11 was offered as
a less expensive horn than the Music Master. From what I have seen, people who
upgraded their Triumph went more for the Music Master than the #11.

I was recently outbid on a #11 Cygnet that was just on eBay but only by 1
higher bid. It went for less than I had figured so I ended up with bidders
remorse. I should have bid more aggressively...

Best wishes to all,

Hi,
I have this black and gold horn and it is extra. I got it because I
thought it went with a Triumph but I don't have a machine for it
anymore. Is it worth more than a regular 10 panel?

John,

You owe no one an apology. Yes, one purpose of the list is to share
further knowledge about the hobby. Phono-L is also a conduit for
socialization among those of us who share common bonds.

Folks, if you get your panties in a wad over some non-phono related
chatter, run your own listserve and make the rules. Hang out here, you
play by my rules.

Thanks,
Loran

knowledge about our shared hobby. That is true.

I simply responded to a public message that was posted by a list member. I had written him privately asking
him to let me know how he was doing. He answered publicly. Was it off subject? Yes. I did not use the list as
a soap box' I merely made a compassionate response to a list member's message. I assume he

mainstream ailment, I would not have been accused of being on my soapbox, which
implies a political attitude.

Be that as it may, I am sorry if my public response to a public message

searched for any size slotted set screws for my restoration of a
Fairy Phono Lamp - no luck - not that they might be out there
somewhere, just not commonly available any more.

I think you are looking for a set screw, or grub screw, probably
slotted.

Try searching for that. have you asked George Vollema?

Subject: [Phono-L] Looking for a screw for a BK

Hello all,

I am looking now for a headless screw for a Columba BK. It is the
size 5-40
and holds the rod that he caraige slides across above the feed screw
and
gear. It's for the rod that is in front of the mandrel. There is
only one

screw and it goes on the left side of the rod. This is the BK with the
black bedplate. I am hoping I can find some one with an original
one that I

do not have to alter. I called Dwyane Wyatt and he only has one that I
would have to screw in and then cut off. That is not the way I want
to go

about it if I can help it. If any one has one I would be very happy to
purchase it.
I would also like to thank EVERYONE for all the help I have been given
here. I live in a very rural mile square town with it being over
100 miles
to the nearest city. It is so nice to be able to be in contact with
other
collectors even though I do not get to meet anyone face to face.
Maybe I
will be able to make it to the next Orlando, Florida show and get to
see

some old friends and make some new ones.
Kenneth

Hi Ken,Please explain what you meant by the right hand side of the
attachment was missing... If it is just the bearing on the right
side, you
already have one in your machine. He couldn't be referring to the
feedscrew,
since that is permanently attached to the 2/4 gearing. The only
other thing
would be the feedscrew tube, which you also already have. So, if he
has the
feedscrew with the round gear case assembly attached and he has the
BE plate
that has the locking post on it, you should be good. You might also
need the
screws to attach the plate and the tube. Send a pic if you have one.
Also,

let me know what he is asking, if you don't mind. My email is:

I have a large collection of Edison 2 minute cylinders and was just in
fear that he diamond stylus in the H stylus would carve out or
damage the
grooves in the was cylinders. I know what you mean about wax
breaking. I
just broke my copy of Bake Dat Chicken Pie and I was almost in tears
over
it. Lucky for me I found someone willing to sell thiers and it is
in better
condition than mine was. So I guess it all worke out for the good.
But
thanks for your input. I think I have found a 2/4 minute attachment
for my
Sears Oxford that was made after the BKT so the BK conversion
attachment
will work on it. How cool is that? Still no luck on a complete
Colubia BE
2/4 minute attachment. I found someone that has most of one but
missing the
right hand side of it. I told him if he can find the other part I
would be

more than happy to buy it.

Again, thanks for all your help,
Ken
