[Phono-L] Variety in collecting.
Once again as the owner of this machine I find it to be a very neat and different machine. I still assure you that it is an aftermarket job done at the time it was new. However the inside was redone and he put a underlid decal on it that had a wood background. I think he had it produced for the machine. That really stinks and I wish he would have left it alone no matter what the condition was. That being said, I thought a lot of the posts were just rude and arrogant in the way they were worded as if I painted it in my basement and was trying to scam people. As for the authenticity of the machine I have this discussed this machine with Mr Baumbach a few years back and he agreed is was an aftermarket job done when the machine was new. I still have his emails confirming this. I have many friends in this hobby and am always forthright when selling machine. As for Bob Johnson's comments about it (You will not see me bid even ten bucks on this one). That is probably the most arrogant comment made. You clearly have more money than brains and just because you can afford to purchase all the your machines certainly does not make you the expert. You level of self-importance it laughable. I suspect you thought you were the one I was referring to when I stated I had spoken to a Victor expert, you are certainly vain enough to think so. Quite frankly I do not care who likes the machine or doesn't like, that does not take away from what it is. I too being a car nut and having owned several classic/muscle cars do not like every car I see at car shows. But I certainly do not walk up to the owner and let him know, in a rude manner, about it. - Original Message - From: Robert Wright esrobe...@hotmail.com To: Antique Phonograph List phono-l@oldcrank.org Sent: Tuesday, October 16, 2007 5:38 PM Subject: Re: [Phono-L] Variety in collecting. I had posted the following a few days ago, probably the 4th post in this particular string or so, which never made it through because I inadvertantly used the wrong sending address: Apologies, Gregory. I was referring to whomever did the paint job(s), not the seller. I still think it looks like shabby folk art though, and the grey interior makes no sense to me. But mostly, I'm just tired of seeing people getting screwed left and right on eBay on dubious machines, etc, and was probably too quick to assume this was another potential example (even if I was not alone in my assumption). Glad to hear a positive reference from you on this seller. (And even more relieved to later find out the seller was a member of this list, which I consider an indication of utmost integrity.) That said, I don't think it's realistic or beneficial to pretend that every aftermarket alteration is a positive thing just because it was done around the time of an item's manufacture, whether the resulting machine remains original and correct or not. I wouldn't care if Lee Iacocca's neighbor's kids spray-painted Free Love all over the first Mustang he drove home from the factory the day of its manufacture, it would still look like an abhorrent desecration to me. If someone else likes it and wants to pay millions for it, more power to 'em. I'm glad for all the diversity in collectors' tastes as well as in the machines we collect, believe me, but I refuse to pretend this machine we've been discussing looks authentic (even if it absolutely is), valuable (which seems to be in debate), or tasteful/attractive (the Shelby mod vs. kids with spray paint analogy holds up well on this point). While it's not my cup of tea by any stretch of the imagination, I offer absolutely zero criticism to anyone who finds it appealing, and I deserve better than to be criticized because I don't. Just another 2 cents. [Phono-L] Asian Victor
I have see the postings for this machine as well as the one on the Victrola message board. First I am shocked at some of the arrogance of the postings, especially the one below. I own this machine and am the seller. I have been on Ebay for almost 9 years with 100% positive feedback and having been collecting phonographs, mostly Victor machines for around 12 years. That being said I still look for the experts for help and advice often. As far as the machines goes and the below post... the INSIDE was repainted, that must have been missed by this response. I can only state what I was told when I purchased it as far as condition of the inside goes. He claimed it was not that nice and he repainted it. He did say it also had details inside. I agree about the inside almost always being perfect on a machine and would rather have the inside left original but I could not change what the previous owner did. As far as the outside I probably should have been clearer in the auction, but I did NOT say this was a Victor Factory job. As a matter of fact years ago I posted on one of these lists the machine to show it and I personally feel it was DONE BY THE DEALER. I even posted ads from Talking machine world at that time. http://home.comcast.net/~vtm12/asianad1.jpg http://home.comcast.net/~vtm12/asianad2.jpg As for the outside. This is absolutely an original finish from the time the machine was new. Look at the amount of detail and type of work that was done on it. To say it's an amatuer paint job is ridiculous and to compare it to some of the other pieces with little artwork is also off base. I guess I could have had a two page text description on the machine in the auction, but I prefer a shorter ad and know that any true Victor Collector will know the rarity of the machine. Whether you think it's ugly (as most of my fellow collectors who see my collection say about it), or thinks it's beautiful as I do... that rarity of it stays the same. And as a side note I have discussed this machine via email with many collectors and who I would consider a Victor expert and he agrees with me about it being an dealer job done from the original sale of the machines. - Original Message - From: Douglas Houston cdh...@earthlink.net To: Antique Phonograph List phono-l@oldcrank.org Sent: Sunday, October 14, 2007 2:53 PM Subject: RE: [Phono-L] Asian Victor I commented on another forum on this. One thing that glaringly detracts from authenticity is the face that the lid decal was masked for the inerior paint job. Had it been done at the factory, the decal would have been applied AFTER the paint. I'm not one who likes pastels at all, nand this blue-gray interior is vomit-inducing to me. I, as Bruce says, doubt that this thing is for real. It's a screamin' lot better than I could do, but I have no artistic talent at all. I couldn't even draw good stick figures! So, some poor sap is gonna get the reaming of his life with this abortion. By the way, I've always found that the interior of Victrolas was better preserved than the exterior. I just bought a VE-XVI electrola, and typically (to me), the playing compartment came like new with a Go-Jo cleaning, while the exterior will need to flowed after the Go-Jo. I own several of these Chinese painted Victrolas and have observed many more in my 26 years of collecting. I believe this is the work of an artist with too much time on his/her hands. It obviously is not a factory job because of the mahogany wood behind the lid decal. I have never seen any Victrola with the interior done in grey. Mostly orange, sometimes pastel blue or green but that is it. Since the Oriental painted Victrolas were expensive models, why would Victor ever put an expensive paint job on the inexpensive XIV? If I thought it had a remote chance of being authentic, I would bid upwards of $4,000 or so. You will not see me bid even ten bucks on this one. May the bidders beware. Bob
[Phono-L] Asian Victrola
Bob, Although I usually value your opinion I certainly would have to argue with this one. You also did not read the description. The inside is redone and so is the decal. As for high machines being the only Asian cased machine John Andolina had a VV-IV table top model (what $25 bucks new), that had an Asian design on it. It was on Ebay in July of 2006 and did not hit reserve at $4,000. It is also featured in one of Fabrizio books, so that blows the high machine only theory. That being said I will stick by the fact that I believe it to be a after market dealer job done at the time it was new. [Phono-L] William and Mary
Very well put Peter... I have 3 daughters, 11, 8, and 2 1/2. I also have 3 machines in my living room. A circassian walnut 16, a Victor 6 and a VV-230. They have been there for years (even when the older kids were babies)and the kids know not to touch them. The machines are actually surrounded by some toys and they still have never messed with or hurt the machines. Don't blame the kid, blame the parents. The parents need to teach, and if the child is too young, the parents need to supervise and control.. I'm surprised at you gentlemen. Any parents amongst you? Not to brag, but neither of my kids (now ages 6 and 10) have ever broken a record or scratched or crayoned or poked any of my machines, and we're not nazis about enforcement. Both have had operating machines (one a vv-x and one an amberola 30) in their rooms since babyhood. It's just a matter of giving the kids the guidance they need. It doesn't stop with babyhood, either. Now to the matter at hand. The original material was silk, except for the Edisonics with the perforated wooden panel covered with embroidery. Just go down to your local sari shop (doesn't every US town have at least one now?) and get the nicest thinnest silk you can find, and glue or tack it to the back of your grille. Colors seem to be either golden, gold- brown or chocolate brown in the originals i've seen. It's important for the silk to be very thin - hold it up to the light - to allow the sound to come through properly. No burlap! [Phono-L] Checked finishes on Phonograph cabinets
Cotton cleanser does not strip the finish nor does it get rid of the alligatoring. It simply cleans the surface of the years of grime. I personally like it and think it works well for the above purpose. I have a Victrola that has been gone through mechanically and runs beautifully. The issue is the cabinet. It is badly checked from being exposed to sunlight over the years. I am definitely one who likes to keep my phonographs in original condition, as much as possible. However, this old machine needs some cosmetic help. I don't want to strip and refinish the Victrola, but am looking for a way to restore and rejuvenate the original finish. I have seen a few posts in the past regarding the use of Kotton Klenser. I am looking at their products on the web. Do these products, help to smooth out the original finish or do they strip it off for refinishing. I can't tell a lot from the web site. Do you use just the Kotton Klenser with the 0 steel wool, or do you use the protective wood feeder as well? I would appreciate some advice as to it's use from those with experience. Thank you. [Phono-L] sending question on Modernola again
Most Modernola machines I have seen go for around $1500-2000. There have been some on Ebay in the past and a sold locally here in PA. I am about 45 minutes from Adamstown. I am guessing you bought it from a booth inside the Rennigers market? I just got a MODERNOLA and could use some information on it. I'm still trying to figure out why I bought the thing. I don't collect inside horn machines anyway. I'm blaming it on Audra for wanting me to buy it right now being she liked the lamp shade on the thing. I can crank it to about 28 full cranks, so I take it that it's a single barrel? What is the average price these machines are going for? I believe I paid too much for the thing. This is the first one I have actually seen other then the picture in the book on Antique Phonographs. The condition is really pretty good. The lamp shade is NOT original but looks pretty nice with the machine. The only thing I know about it is that it was made close to Adamstown, Pa.where I bought it yesterday and not many models were made from the company. If a motor problem would come due, would they be hard to fix? The tone arm is pot metal. Any information on the machine would be great! [Phono-L] question regarding a Columbia Grafonola
Bob, Look in the Columbia Phonograph Companion Vol. II (if you have that book). Sounds like one of the period Columbia's on page 190-191. Vince - Original Message - From: Bob Maffit maff...@bresnan.net To: Antique Phonograph List phono-l@oldcrank.org Sent: Saturday, July 16, 2005 7:20 PM Subject: [Phono-L] question regarding a Columbia Grafonola Phono folks: I thought someone on the list may be able to help and is up for a challenge on a Saturday evening . I bought a phonograph at an auction which does not have the works in it. I bought it because it looks like a piece of furniture. , unfortunately I have no pics at this time . It is unusual enough that someone may recognize it via a general description. It looks like a sofa table that would stand behind a sofa. It is unique in that, in the center of the top it has a roll top type lid that opens to the rear of the cabinet to reveal the phonograph cavity that would hold the ( platter, tonearm etc.) .It must be about 30 inches high, 18 inches deep and 4 feet wide. The cabinet it self is on legs and on the face of the cabinet on the left and right side are grills. If one reaches under the front face, a little knob can be moved left or right, depending on which side you are trying, and it slides the horn chamber open . In the works area, on the wood is a label that states Columbia Grafonola. Initially I thought it was a wined up, however on closer examination I don't think so. I say that as I can't figure out how a crank would work on the thing. It has an opening( little round ( at the rear of the cabinet that may accommodate a power cord to exit. It is only on the left rear of the cabinet if you are facing it from the back side. When looking at the opening that is revealed after moving the roll top type cover, the motor must mount on a round mounting plate about 10 inches in diameter, with screw holes located at, 1-4-7-11 o'clock ( using a clock metaphor ). My conclusion is that it must be a electric motor and a acoustic tone arm / reproducer. Well! give this one a try. I do realize that folks visualize things differently , but hopefully my description may work. [Phono-L] PAYPAL is a Business
I thought this was a phonograph list I think this can be summed up very easily 1. PAYPAL is a business just like anything else out there. If you spend $30 on a credit card at the local grocery store. The grocery store pays the credit card company a percentage. Anytime you use a credit card the merchant is paying the CC company. It's the cost of doing business. 2. If you sell at the flea market, antique mall, etc... you are paying to be there. It's the cost of doing business. 3. Fact of the matter is... you are getter a MUCH wider audience selling on Ebay than you ever did selling at a antique mall, flea market. Tons of things sold on ebay probably go for twice what they would locally. On the other sides buyers/collectors are seeing things they would not have in their lifetime collecting locally. As for what happen to Fred... that is horrible. I think EBAY is horrible to get a hold of and basically they do what they want when they want to but let's face it, it's the only game in town!
[Phono-L] could use a price on Phonographs

[Phono-L] Victrola XII
Does that crank go in too far to make it usable or unsightly as-is? If not why not just leave it as is. I had a table top VV-X that had the same problem. When I screwed the crank on it simply moved the crank in 1/4, not enough to even make a difference in the appearance. - Original Message - From: Richard Rubin richard_ru...@hotmail.com To: phono-l@oldcrank.org Sent: Friday, March 10, 2006 8:24 PM Subject: [Phono-L] Victrola XII O.K., I've checked around on this one and now I need some advice. I have a Victrola XII which I've been restoring for some time now, and it's coming along well. The motor is in fine shape, with one exception: The winding shaft. At some point its its history, the tip broke off. I'm not sure just how much, but some of it's gone. The good news is that there's still enough threading on it to make it usable; the bad news is that the tip, which extends beyond the threaded part (I don't know exactly how much beyond -- anyone out there know?) is supposed to stop the winding key from screwing on too far. So, I have a few options: 1. I could get a winding shaft off another XII motor. This is my first choice, and if someone has a parts XII motor, I'd really like to hear from you. 2. I could try to modify a winding shaft from another motor, though I'm not sure if any others are even suitable to that purpose. 3. I could have someone make a me a new one, using my old one and the specs as a guide; again, if anyone out there knows the exact specs, I'd really like to hear from you. 4. I could leave the shaft alone and insert something into the winding key -- a ball bearing, for instance -- to keep it from screwing on too far. So, as I said, if someone has a shaft or knows where I can get one, please let me know. Likewise, if you have the exact specs for the shaft, again, I'd appreciate hearing from you. But I guess I'd also like to hear which course you all think I should pursue if option #1 doesn't work out. Is it better to modify another one, to try and make a new one, or to slightly (and invisibly) modify the crank? Thanks in advance for your opinions. ___ Phono-L mailing list Phono-L@oldcrank.org Phono-L Archive http://www.oldcrank.org/pipermail/phono-l/

[Phono-L] I smell a rat.....................
He actually deals in phonographs on the side. He is a very nice guy. As for if there were shilling in the auction who knows. I once watched an oak upright 11 sell for $1500 on Ebay. I listed one on Ebay that was nicer the following week and it only hit $325. Sometimes is just takes two nuts to run the price up. We constantly see price differences on Ebay. A beautiful Vic V with Spear tip sold not too long ago for $4,000, while one just ended yesterday in the same condition for only $3200. I would find it hard to believe that if someone shilled it they would continue until they won something. I would guess they would shill it up to the reserve and let the next bidder meet reserve. As for emailing the under bidders, especially when you are not the person selling the original item. I can see why people would not answer the emails. This list seems to be a good old boy list because so many on it don't use their own names, yet they all know who each other are. It makes it very difficult for someone new to feel like they belong. Maybe I'm looking for a perfect world that doesn't exist. I don't see too many ways to sell my machines outside Ebay other than Todd Augsburg's site or Len Bilton's. Maybe the members of this list could come up with some vehicle for selling and posting wants. It would sure be helpful if you knew the interests of other individuals. Maybe the list could find some way to let individuals list their areas of interest. These may all be old territory that has been discussed on the list before. If so, I apologize. I would sure like to find a way to contribute in a positive manner to the list. John Pisano made a couple good points on Ebay auctions, re. use credit card and Bidpay, but they seemed to go unnoticed. The discussion all went to bad shippers and bad packing.
