Re: [Phono-L] ebay fraudlent seller
Not sure my original email was received, but wanted to update all regarding the Lithuanian fraudulent seller. Paypal returned my money, and the Lithuanian con man came up empty with the radar from paypal and ebay on the lookout for him. One of the helpful contributing factors was the help I received from this phono email connection. I mentioned to paypal that I was in contact with other collectors on this email site that they were aware of a Lithuanian conman with the same MO on eaby. Because I had alerted them on the day I purchased the item, they withheld the funds until verified. He has no money and we have his number! Thanks again to everyone, this connection has been of great service and a support for an emotional roller coaster ride. Re: [Phono-L] ebay fraudlent seller
I lost out on $500 'cause I didn't cash a phony $2800 M.O. He was going to let me keep that (in addition to the $300 for the item) after I mailed the extra $2000 to his son. It was well done - the M.O. was drawn on a national bank. But having STEPPED off the turnip truck I Googled the bank - they had branch only two blocks away from the one the M.O. was from - Why so close? I asked myself. So I called their 1-800 #. I gave them the account number - I didn't even finish before they told me it was a phony. The interesting part was they didn't want a copy or have anything to do with it - great attitude! Google's great - I also Googled the phone number of the bank on the phony M.O. - it came up associated with three other numbers. I called all four. They were businesses who had no knowledge of the individual but had similar inquiries - they assumed the phone company had listed the number wrong. And all you have to do is let the buyer know you'll hold the stuff for a week or two for the MO to clear. They'll either agree or go away. best, Darrell == Rich wrote: If you request a USPS money order you can go to the post office and actually check that the MO is valid and not a phony. Over the past 10-12 years I've mailed over 7000 packages - two have gotten lost. And until the past 2-3 years almost all were paid for by check. Only two bounced and both made them good immediately. As my heart began to pound, I couldn't believe I was the first, and those who snooze loose motto popped in my head. I checked out the photo's and the unit was in mint condition. I immediately purchased it which began a roller coaster of emotions. The other motto of if its too good to be true, it usually it also reared it truth of reality. I checked his ebay and history and there was none. A tracking number was given and DPD (out of Germany) had no record of this number. The person was also from Lithuania! The phone number given was also bogus. I sent four emails asking for verification and to no avail, no response! The good news was that I alerted paypal. They said that they agreed that this most likely was a fraudulent sale, and I would be guaranteed that I would receive a full refund. We have to wait, there's a 1% chance he might still send it, but paypal has to wait 30 days (time limit for the seller to send the package). I made a huge mistake and let my emotions get the best of common sense. I hope my mistake will be of help to my phono friends. Re: [Phono-L] ebay fraudlent seller
Well maybe on eBay there is a guarantee but not from a guy with a velvet-covered tray on a pickup truck tailgate in a parking lot in New Hampshire. On one hand, bargains do turn up in attics, yard sales, and flea markets but on the other, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Only the smart collector and wheeler-dealers seem to know which is which. And I ain't one of them! Re: [Phono-L] ebay fraudlent seller
Another scam related incident - I just won a music box that was a replica of a Thorens machine for the minimum bid of $15.00 - parts missing, it really wasn't worth much more. The seller cancelled the transaction because he/she said that he/she was not comfortable accepting a Wells Fargo money order for payment... like he/she was taking a risk - on $15.00? I was the one taking the risk attempting to send a cash equivalent payment without first receiving the item... I don't get it, except that was a way to get out of the sale. Fortunately, in all of the transactions I have made in the US and Europe, I only got scammed once, even though I have sent cash for payments... just lucky, I guess, except most collectors are honest. ___ Phono-L mailing list http://phono-l.org
