That's because people who expect free help without RTFM are lazy and
do not deserve help. How else do you plan to learn the language
without RTFM? The knowledge isn't going to just jump into your head.
Great, there goes my theory about sleeping with the PHP manual under my
pillow. ;)

I was thinking of doing the same but gave up because i couldn't figure
out a way of clicking on the links in my printed version of the manual.

It's not about allowed ( your post made it to my inbox without
issue) or not, but please do consider the high-traffic nature of the
list.

Reading the manual goes with learning the language. If the manual
doesn't answer your question then the mailing list archives

http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=php-general

should be searched. Failing there you should try Google. If, after
all that, you still have a question, then this is definitely the place
to ask.

Its not that you have to read all of the manuals and books. You just need to
take some time to figure out what you really want to do with your code, then
compare that with what php can actually do and adjust your 'to do' list
accordingly. I myself and I am sure most of the others on this list visit
the manual regularly just to make sure we have the args and returns of
functions correct and various other things. We have just learned to look
things up before asking for help.

We could learn a lot from crayons:
some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, some have weird names,
and all are different colorsbut they all exist very nicely in the same
box.
