Alternatively I'd
use anything with uniform character widths such as Terminal, Courier,
Courier New or Lucida Console.


Courier new and lucida console is in the fallback list, plus most  
browsers will fallback to just courier when its a monospace font.

I like it as well, but I would still like to allow the user to
select their own font - perhaps an entire style.

If I ever get the chance, I'm going to put up a patch for review
--- unless someone else decides it's a good idea and they can do it
first.  ;-P
