Re: [pinhole-discussion] what do i do with 4x5 film negatives
I am building a wooden camera that will take 4x5 film backs. I was planning on just loading the film backs with 4x5 pieces of RC paper. If I were to load it with 4x5 sheets of FILM instead, what can I do with the film negative once I've exposed and developed it? Can I still only contact print it? It's obviously too big for the enlarger unless I wanted to crop it right? Sorry if this is a silly question. Think of it this way, if you use paper negatives, you can only make contact prints. (well, i guess it's possible to enlarge a single weight RC paper neg). If you use film, you always have the option of enlarging it. I guess you could enlarge a 4x5 negative using a smaller enlarger and cropping, but there are 4x5 enlargers available quite cheap. I paid $100 for my old 6x6 enlarger, then a year later paid $125 for an omega D2. I put about $150 into new lenses and condensers, so now I can do everything up to 4x5. So, I recommend you play around with 4x5 film, and if you decide you like the format, get a 4x5 enlarger. Try and find one locally (as opposed to ebay) so you don't have to pay a ton of money for shipping. John

I am embarrassed to admit that I don't know very much about Ann Hamilton, and actually, this information may not even be about the same artist. The Ann Hamilton I know of is an installation artist, although I have seen some of her video work. The Headlands Center for the Arts is a collection of repurposed military buildings in the Marin Headlands, across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco and out towards the Pacific Ocean. One of the most stunning parts of the complex is the mess hall, where resident artists eat five nights a week and the public can eat when there are public programs. It is a fantastic place to cook and bake, and Hamilton designed that space in 1989: http://www.headlands.org/About/MessHall.shtml She had a piece in the Carnegie International art show in Pittsburgh a few years ago that was, if memory serves, a very long white wall that had rivulets of water trickling down it; might not sound like much, but to see it and spend some time with it was rewarding. Also found a review of a show at the San Jose Museum of Art from last year where here work is discussed in the context of thirty years of installation art: http://mitpress2.mit.edu/e-journals/Leonardo/reviews/oct2000/ex_BLUR_rapop.html --Eric

I make lens boards for my speed graphic from black mat board. Easy to cut a bunch and have various focal lengths and zoneplates handy. I also use black foamcore to mount pinholes in shutters. Easy and inexpensive. Your local frame shop can be a source of small pieces of matboard--especially if you are having them frame your work. Re: [pinhole-discussion] what do i do with 4x5 film negatives
Hi Rob, If you're unhappy with the smallish size of 4x5 contact prints you should look into a 4x5 enlarger. Along with the enlarger, a 135mm or 150mm enlarging lens is necessary to cover the large format. If you're patient and look you're sure to find a bargin these days since more people are moving digital. that way you won't be forced into cropping. If you have a computer you could go that way but it may require a bit of hardware and software depending on what you may or may not already have.besides the computer itself you would need a decent scanner with a transparency unit, an image editing program like photoshop and a good printer preferably a 6 color model. Good luck. Mike In a message dated 9/23/01 11:37:30 AM, ra...@rahji.com writes: Hi, I am building a wooden camera that will take 4x5 film backs. Re: [pinhole-discussion] what do i do with 4x5 film negatives
You can make duplicate negs and manipulate them, you can find someone or someplace with a 4x5 enlarger and enlarge them. If you just want to play with camera-making and contact printing, try making a 5x7 or even an 8x10, both of which make great contact prints. - Original Message - From: R Duarte ra...@rahji.com To: pinhole-discussion@p at ??? I have made slides from black and white negs (I presume you meant that) by using a slide duplicator and Techpan film processed to high (but not maximum) contrast in HC110.
