Re: [pinhole-discussion] The panopin
No I fully understand it would be unfair (if not illegal) to use someone elses ideas without consent. I really have no plans on stealing another person's hard work and design. I tend to look at things I like, then try to make them myself. Call it a test of my thinking skills. My current design is from another person's website but have run into a snag of film transport. Today I pretty much considered on giving up the whole project and just stay with the camera I have. I figure if I am using a 4x5 camera and I make a mask to give me two images of 2 x 5 on one sheet of film then I can enlarge the negative to pretty much panoramic scale. The only thing I was thinking about was the curved film plane. I am guessing lenses use their curvature to correct for this and pinholes need the curved film plane to make the image appear as seen. I tried to email Kurt from his site, hoping to purchase a camera, but the email was returned as an invalid email address. I even emailed the company that makes the panopin camera but no response and I really do not want to order something from a company that I do not know is still in business. Other plans I had were to purchase an old view camera and convert it to a really expensive pinhole camera. Or make up a fixed focal length large format camera using a 65 mm lens. Regardless, of my ramblings and tinkerings, I guess I should just take pictures more than design cameras. Then again I should use Mr. Au's camera more often as well. Its really a nicely made device, though I think its focal length is a bit too wide to my style of photography. Anyhow thanks for the reply. And if you can get in contact with Kurt let him know he might very well have a customer. Enjoy the rest of your day. CJ
Re: [pinhole-discussion] The panopin
I would be happy to send you some images of the camera, but I need to check with Kurt to make sure it's OK with him. I don't know if you are aware of a problem that Zernike Au of the Zero Camera Company has had with having his design stolen. I'll let you know when I hear back from Kurt. I am still in the design phase of my camera and wanted to see how the film advance mechanism worked as well as if there is a curved back support to the film. I got a round container from someone at work today - I eat the square ones. Looks like 2-7/8" mat circle will fit inside bottom, a little loose in the lid. Tell me what you hoep to accomplish with a mat and I'll see if my cutter will do it. [pinhole-discussion] Image not filling out paper
Okay... another newbie question. One of the cameras that I am using is an oversized oatmeal can. I'm using 8X10 paper, which fits perfectly when placed horizontally. The image isn't taking up the entire area, and I'm wondering what exactly causes this, and what I can do to get it closer to the edges. Here is an example of what I'm talking about: http://www.pbase.com/image/15725356 Shelley C. Rauch Acquisitions Dept. [pinhole-discussion] Re: negative scanner
Shelley, I am still quite the novice with film scanning. However, I have used various scanners with good results. I do not know if you really need a high-end film scanner. It seems the all of the newer flatbed epson scanners with transparency adapters work quite well for most purposes. The epson 2450 and 3200 have transparency adapters built into the lid and will accomodate negatives up to 4 inches by 9 inches and have great resolution and sharpness. I have tested this against images made from Photo CD's and a Nikon Coolscan IV - and can honestly say that the epson does a better job. Also, I am getting great results from negatives that I thought were unprintable (that is most of my pinhole images). One item that I want to include is that I shoot mainly 35mm pinhole and develop with acufine or similar high acutance developers. It is difficult to enlarge these images, because the grain of the film really sticks out and it is easily apparent if one part of the image is out of focus. Most enlargers (under $2500) do not allow for very accurate alignment (call this anal or obsessive behaviour) giving the image a true sharpness. I have not had the same problems with digital imaging. With a good scanner and a decent printer running quadtones, you have possibilities not available in the average closet darkroom. My .02 C...
