Thank you, Guillermo, for the knowledge and wisdom you contributed to
pinhole day, and to what you contribute to the list throughout the year.
Long live El Salvador and long live Toronto!

[pinhole-discussion] can be on topic...

2003-06-02 Thread andy schmitt
Just a few things I've found this weekend @ Home Depot/Lowes

a. 5x7 Aluminum Step Flashing 10 pieces ~2.00 (85-068) (roofing Dept) nice
flat rather thin aluminum pieces(Amerimax Home Products) too thick for good
pinholes but flexible enough to play with. Also real good for doing "modern"
tintypes with Liquid Photo Emulsion. Make sure you get a pack that isn't
bent or creased...

b. Really nice large trays cheep. Look for Refrigerator trays. I guess
people put their refrigerators in them to stop condensation from running on
the floor. They are a few inches hi and bigger than the size of the
footprint of a large refrigerator. The are less than $10 each. Nice for
processing that really big paper negative..

c. Bellow Patching compound. Equinox Photographic - equi...@pond.net . Put
it on with a small brush or Q-Tip. Flexible seal...just nice stuff. (not at
HD/Lowes..)

well enough rambling & hope this helps someone.

2003-06-02 Thread Tom Miller
Dear All,

Thanks to all of you who participated in Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day
2003, more thanks than can fit in an email, thanks for sure. The variety,
beauty and creativity of the exhibit is stunning to me. (Have I said that
before on this list?) The other good things I said still stand, too. Wow:
1082 invidivuals and images. Now we have eleven months to enjoy the results
of all the enthusiasm across the globe last April 27. It won't be long
until April 25, 2004.

And news from our tiny commerce division: The pinhole day team has decided
to stop selling pinhole day t-shirts and other "wares" on June 15. The cost
of these items is a little pricey and WPPD gets very little of it - $1.00
per item sold. Thanks to the 30 or so people who bought pinhole day
souvenirs and items this year - that helps a lot to pay the costs of the web
site. So, if anyone wants to buy anything from WPPD3, you will need to do
so by June 15.

That is right Richard, but only 1082 "hang" in the gallery, the remainder 77
were rejected for not complying with the submission rules (i.e., only one
image per participant) or simply because there was no actual image in the
submission, in which case the participant was notified and invited to
re-submit the image.

[pinhole-discussion] funnel pinhole camera

2003-06-02 Thread Aeryck Anechiarico
I was thinking recently about the idea of a funnel shaped pinhole camera, in
regards to a modification to a tube one. Such as when you have a tube
camera with the pinhole at the end of the tube you can get 360 degrees of
view, or 720 with a hole at each end, why not make one that is shaped as a
funnel with the hole being at the end where the film is at its widest area
(opposite the narrow end of the funnel.

I figured this would make some interesting distortion effects on the picture
and compensate for loss of light at the narrow end. I have not actually
built a test one yet, but was curious if anyone else had done so and what
where the results if you have?

Just curious to see how it would all turn out. And considering the nature
of its design, I would most likely only use it with print film instead of a
negative. Any comments?

Aeryck

There are many things to consider, one is: do you really need 120 degrees of
view (DV)? the DV, BTW, depends on the diagonal of the format and the
focal length of your camera.

Now, assuming you do need 120 DV, the formula to anticipate the "wall's
thickness" would depend on where inside the shutter you mount your pinhole.
There are 3 cases:

1- installing the pinhole right midway inside the shutter: In this case the
"wall thickness" has to be smaller than 1.732 times the diameter of the
shutter's opening (in case you ask 1.732 = Tan[120/2]). In your example,
with a shutter 18mm in diameter, the "wall thickness" should not be more
than 18 / 1.732 , in other words it can not be thicker than 10.39mm

2- installing the pinhole anywhere from flush with the rear of the shutter
to just before midway inside the it. In this case, if we call "I" the
distance from the rear of the shutter to where the pinhole is installed and
"W" the diameter of the shutter, the "wall thickness" has to be less than:

[W / (2 * Tan(120/2))] + I

3- installing the pinhole anywhere from flush with the front of the shutter
to just before midway inside the it. In this case, if we call "F" the
distance from the front of the shutter to where the pinhole is installed and
"W" the diameter of the shutter, the "wall thickness" has to be less than:

[W / (2 * Tan(120/2))] + F

Case 1 is a particular case of both Case 2 and 3. The 3 Cases could
probably be combined into 1 single formula, but at this point of the night
my brain cells are not functioning quite well, so I better hit the pillow.
