Bravo, Tom! I wish I could have been there. It must have been really great to see all this work and the people who actually did it. Keep up this great work and indeed try to get it lined up with the 2nd Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day on April 28, 2002. [pinhole-discussion] Upper Midwest Pinhole Get-together - Wow
Dear All, Bill Erickson and I would like to thank all who participated in yesterday's "Pinhole: Informal Forum," also known as the "Upper Midwest Pinhole Get-together," at the pARTs Photographic Arts Gallery in Minneapolis. The event was a success and an inspiration for both presenters and attendees. Also thanks to Gregg Kemp for providing internet space on his site and in the "Pinhole Visions" for the for forum announcement. Chris Faust presented work from a series he created about ten years ago that placed pinhole cameras in the perspective of a child and viewed the world from this playful vantage point. His work included an 360-degree, 18 foot long print taken from the inside of a playpen by a Cirkut camera fitted with a zone plate. This image is also in Pinhole Journal, vol 12 #3. List member Eric Nelson discussed how he incorporates pinhole photography into his junior high art classes. He also showed several of his own and his students' images. Derrick Burbul, from the University of Minnesota, Duluth, showed his multi-pinhole camera that takes five 4x5 exposures at once, as well as images made with the camera. John Campbell (http://www.pinholeday.org/2001/photo_79.html) showed his work done mostly with pinholes mounted on Leicas and also on a Nikon digital camera. Andrew Kamin (www.pinholeplanet.com) demonstrated his prototype dual focal length 4x5 camera and showed several transparancies made with this camera. Bill Erickson presented several platinum prints and a cyanotype from recent travel to Ireland. Attendees who stayed for the question/answer/network session saw some of my dual-slit color photos from the Iconclast series. The pARTs Gallery staff was excited by the enthusiastic turnout. I'll be working with them on the possibility of having pARTs be a local / regional center for next year's Pinhole Day. Tom Miller
Re: [pinhole-discussion] Upper Midwest Pinhole Get-together.
Donna To follow up on Guy's tale of a broken camera. The Holga. while not having the cult status of the Diana, is much more robust, has less light leak problems, and is a lot cheaper. Many people will modify a Holga lens with steelwool, sandpaper, or clear fingernail polish to reduce the "sharpness" and approximate the Diana lens effect. Others have removed the lens from a dysfunctional Diana and mounted them on lens boards for their 4x5. FWIW - I have a Diana and several clones, but end up shooting mostly with the Holgas. I actually prefer the slightly sharper image of the Holga to the Diana image. But others would choose the reverse order. dibas...@aol.com wrote: > I am relatively new to pinhole (but very much in love) and the discussion > list. I want to add a Diana camera to my small collection of oatmeal boxes Hi Donna, I had a Diana, bought on eBay for an outrageous price, which unfortunately broke. The plastic is plastic and I was carrying it around without protection in my backpack... So I decided to replace it by a clone. Even those are way too expensive. My experience with these cameras is mixed. I like the images I get from them but I don't like the small format of the negative. But then you get more pictures on a roll of 120 film than with a conventional 2 1/4 or a Holga. I also find that it is difficult to mix pinhole with plastic when I put my pictures together for a show or something. Individually they are great, but side by side, it seems that they don't fit together. Winning on eBay is an art... I, myself, wait in the back until the last moments of the auction. I check if the price remains good for me, then I jump in the last few seconds with a maximum bid which I what I am prepared to pay for the item. I generally works, but not always. There are many who follow that strategy and some have nerves of steal (together with a high-speed connection allowing them to wait literally for the last 5 seconds...) Good luck with your experiments if you get one. Cheers, Guy P.S. Thanks, Kurt, for your interesting links.
Re: [pinhole-discussion] Upper Midwest Pinhole Get-together.
If you're going to use it for pinhole, you may as well just get a new Holga or the like (Lomo if you want 35mm), they're only $15 at Freestyle (no financial interest). Re: [pinhole-discussion] Upper Midwest Pinhole Get-together.
Hi Donna Not to worry. Many pinholers shoot Toy cameras as well. I can tell you the little I know - the 151 was the original and shoots a somewhat smaller image than the F. I am not sure about the 162. Prices have gone way up on mint condition Dianas, driven by competition between photographers and collectors for those few. The Diana was put out under many different names by the Great Wall Plastics, and these "clones" have been cheaper but also are increasing in price. That's wonderful, Tom. And it looks like a very interesting organization, love the education program, especially the mentoring. Re: [pinhole-discussion] Upper Midwest Pinhole Get-together.
I am relatively new to pinhole (but very much in love) and the discussion list. I want to add a Diana camera to my small collection of oatmeal boxes and one zero 2000 camera.I know Diana is not a pinhole and I have been sensitized to process and product themes on the discussion as of late. But certainly a related cousin. I have so far lost many ebay bidding wars and realized I don't know what the differences are between the various Diana camera models. Does anybody have any information to share? There seems to be a difference in value for 151 vs. F vs. 162 , etc., but I am not sure whether that is a "collector's issue" or whether the different models might offer something useful for the "fuzzy dreamy quality." Thanks to all of you for this wonderful education I have been receiving. Donna

Worldwide Pinhole Day is in the forum handouts already. We wouldn't neglect it. The proximity of the informal forum to pinhole day is akin the many delightful surprises of pinhole . We had the date set with the pARTs Gallery a couple of weeks before the pinhole day idea was proposed on this list on Valentine's Day. Would be cool if mention is made of Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day, to occur 4/29. [pinhole-discussion] Upper Midwest Pinhole Get-together.
Tom Miller and I are organizing an informal pinhole forum at the pARTS Gallery at 711 W. Lake St,(just off Lyndale) Minneapolis, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday April 26. The gallery is devoted to photographic arts and graciously opened their space to us. Any of you who have corresponded with Pinhole Resource will get a snail mail announcement as well, since Pinhole Resource gracioulsy shared their upper midwest mailing list. We hope as many of you who can make it will be there to share your work and meet your fellow enthusiasts.
