Yeah, Guillermo would be proud of me. I decided on getting one, and didn't even ask my wife. Guillermo- Sometimes I have to do some very fast talking when I have ordered an 'inexpensive' photo item from the US and it arrives costing 3 times as much because of exchange rate, duty, shipping etc, etc. But so far I'm alive, and my sweetie is still with me! Re: [pinhole-discussion] Finney is Back!
I did the same. The pre-anniversary model speed graphic has a perfect 4x4inch lens board capacity. Also, if you remove the stops on the slides you can extend the bellows 13 inches. - Original Message - From: George L Smyth To: Sent: Friday, April 20, 2001 6:45 AM Subject: Re: [pinhole-discussion] Finney is Back! > --- Jeff Dilcher wrote: > > I would love to get > > one, but justifying it to my wife might be tricky! > > > > Has anyone here actually seen a Finney? > > > > I like the idea of the pinhole turret, but, I am wondering, > > if the bellows extension has preset "stops" to coincide > > with the various focal lengths. Yes, but the camera is such a beautiful object amidst my homespun devices. It is so well made with choice materials; it's an absolute pleasure to work with it! Regards, Brigitte. Re: [pinhole-discussion] Finney is Back!
Hi Bill, Buying the turret from Calumet is more cost-effective than buying a new Finney camera in most cases. Something to be aware of: I checked with Calumet recently and the turrets they currently have in stock have a different range of pinholes and zone plates than the standard Finney camera. Camera from Pinhole Resource): 4 pinholes (for focal lengths of 40mm, 75mm, 150mm, 200mm) 3 zone plates (for focal lengths of 75mm, 150mm, & 200mm) Turret from Calumet: features four pinholes (75, 150, 300 and 450mm) and three zone plates (75, 150 and 300mm). Re: [pinhole-discussion] Finney is Back!
You can buy a Finney turret on a 4x4 lensboard from Calumetphoto.com. This holds all the pinholes and zone plates, with a shutter mechanism. About $475, $1,000 less than the whole camera. Then just use it on your 4x5 view or field camera. I was surprised to see that the Finney camera is more sturdy than the pictures would lead you to think. - Original Message - From: Jeff Dilcher To: Sent: Thursday, April 19, 2001 12:14 PM Subject: Re: [pinhole-discussion] Finney is Back! > > > I would love to get > one, but justifying it to my wife might be tricky! > > Has anyone here actually seen a Finney? > > I like the idea of the pinhole turret, but, I am wondering, > if the bellows extension has preset "stops" to coincide > with the various focal lengths. Re: [pinhole-discussion] Finney is Back!
Hi Jeff, I've used a Finney quite a bit over the last two years. The bellows doesn't have "stops" that correspond to the focal lengths. You can set the bellows extension to any focal length you like. The "side scale for measuring bellows extension" mentioned on the Pinhole Resource website unfortunately isn't very visible on the picture. It is a ruler measured in 10mm increments that swings up from the side of the camera. You use it to measure the bellows extension and set it to a length that corresponds to one of the apertures in the turret. (This is a little hard to visualize without seeing the ruler in action.) The ground glass works, but only if ALL light is kept off of it. The focusing cloth must completely surround the camera and the photographer's head. I have used the ground glass two or three times when testing films to make sure that the objects in the test scene are all in the frame. I don't use the ground glass in practice. A lens conceivably could be used on the Finney, since it has a standard sized lens board (turretboard?) 4 inches. However, the Finney doesn't have a bed like a Deardorff and may be too lightly built to hold a heavy lens. The scissor-action extenders visible in the Pinhole Resource photo are all that hold the front in place. Hope this helps. I would love to get one, but justifying it to my wife might be tricky! Has anyone here actually seen a Finney? I like the idea of the pinhole turret, but, I am wondering, if the bellows extension has preset "stops" to coincide with the various focal lengths. Also, I wonder if the the "ground glass viewing screen" is usable with pinhole... Is there any reason why a conventional lens/shutter can't be interchanged on this camera?
