There's a yahoo group DigitalBlackAndWhitethePrint that covers using quadtone
and hextone inks in exhaustive detail.

 Hi,

 Here is some context:

Iris printers started in the early 90s and they are high quality 4 color
inkjet devices. Companies like Nash Editions (http://www.nasheditions.com/)
were pioneers in using these devices for fine art prints.

By the late 90s consumer inkjet printers (epson, HP, etc) had achieved
sufficient quality that people experimented with creating monochrome
inksets for use in these printers. MIS and Piezo are two of the best
 (IMHO).

I like these processes which start with a negative, get a high quality
scan, digital darkroom (precise dodging, burning, contrast control, etc. in
photoshop), and then I have a reproducible art print.

From MIS site -- Specially formulated archival inks have been developed
by MIS for printing black and white images. The quality of the images is
far superior to using the Epson color inks. The black to white range is
increased and the visible dots are greatly reduced, if not eliminated.

Two notes: The tonal gradiations are close to platinium but the darkest
blacks are missing (This technology will not get the last zone of black).
Also prints are made on matt fine art paper, glossy is not available.

I just wanted to second Alixis said, PiezoMIS prints look great. For example
I was in a group show of night photographers in January, and we had a total
of 50 prints in the show (color and BW) with about 20 of the prints BW (10
silver and 10 were ink). No one noticed any quality difference and being
night photography, there were lots of dark tones in the images. Mark

I use an Epson 2000P and am very pleased with it indeed. Used with a high
quality paper the result is very worthwhile and the detail is well
if
you want more detail then perhaps you need to stop using a magnifying glass
to look at the pictures with. The archive quality means that I can present
the prints without fear of the image deteriorating as long as they are
treated like watercolours. There is now a wide range of papers available
for inkjet suitable for most types of images and destinations. The cost
per
print is relatively high, but then this is reflected in the image quality
which is high indeed, filling a gap between lithographic printing and the
extremely expensive silk screen printing.
It is ideal for pinhole photographs.

Re: [pinhole-discussion] piezography

2002-03-21 Thread D Hill

 Greetings,
I have also considered piezography, however it is questionable whether it would
work with my epson 875dc. My prints are generally quite smallish, no bigger
than 6x9 and I have great results with the epson ink sets. There are plenty of
users who find fault with the Epson 870/1270 inks, and sometimes get the
dreaded orange fade. I have not had this difficulty and primarily use it for
monochrome and duotone printing. I have had this printer for about 1.5 years.
The great expense of the piezography system outweighed any potential quality I
would have received, and I can still print full color if I desire. I bought
the printer as a close-out for $99 and It has already paid for itself many
times over. Try printing your monochromes on a high end Epson printer before
you drop the money for the Piezography system.
My local gallery can't decipher what I printed on or used, they just like the
prints. That's probably the best advice I have.

[pinhole-discussion] Re: [pinhole-discussion] piezography?

2001-09-24 Thread Mark Interrante
Hi,

I have begun learning about piezo and find it a beautiful process that is
similar to Platinum. West Coast Imaging did got about 20 people together
to share and discuss the techniques, I came away very impressed with the
tonal range!, sharpness, and beauty of the prints. Limitations--The process
works best on matt paper and the DMax is lower than traditional printing.
I saw numerous comparisons between traditional and piezo, it held it's
own. Many times I thought it was the print I would want to exhibit. I
will begin using the process (on my pinhole/zone images) in the winter once
they have released their new version which works with my Epson 1280 printer.
For those with older Epsons, it already works.

I have heard people refer to piezography
when referring to printing from a computer.

Is this just a fancy term for inkjet printing?

The fancy name is Gicleé and not all the Gicleé prints are printed using
Piezography system. Read about Piezography from the horse's mouth at
