Maybe we could get you access to the porterboxes?

Or is it fine to do it by uploading to unstable?

I would use experimental instead of unstable, but sometimes I've done it
 myself.

Experimental is probably good for any experiment ;)
But as I am DM only some DD should upload there first I guess.

Having quite promising patch I tried again to unstable and now successfully.

very good point, I have the same impression.

When libav forked off of ffmpeg back then, I have heard and read many
people say that with Debian and Ubuntu switching away to libav, ffmpeg
is as good as dead and will vasnish within the next few months. Well,
obviously this didn't happen.

Also, while I cannot speak for the personal tension that has led to the
fork, it seems to me that most of the technical and project management
related issues that were subject to complaint in ffmpeg back then have
been addressed nowadays.

So, it seems to me that the pages have turned and libav is still there
because Debian and Ubuntu are using it -- and not the other way round.

Re: Select provider of libav* libraries

2015-05-10 Thread Dmitry Smirnov
On Sat, 9 May 2015 16:00:49 Andreas Cadhalpun wrote:
What would you count as very compelling reasons if more features, less bugs
and better security support are not sufficient?

More features is not necessary means less maintenance burden;
Less bugs is not always means better software (it is a matter of how upstream
manages bugs);
Quality of security support is something that remains to be seen.

Those are all technical concerns but to me there are other concerns that I
believe are more important. I think we are all can agree that it would be
beneficial if both projects join forces and abandon competition in favour of
cooperation. Therefore if one project disappear then another one would
naturally unite remaining contributors. Then we will have all technical
benefits of better upstream support, less bugs, more features, stronger
security as well as less duplication of effort, less fragmentation and less
maintenance burden.

When we were choosing init system I was against upstart because I did not want
Debian to become its life support. Remember how quickly upstart faded into
obsolescence when it became clear that Debian is not going to use it?

I have a feeling that Debian already became life support for libav.
Ever since Debian chosen libav, ffmpeg remained alive and apparently doing
well without our help. I'm not too sure if libav would be able to stay alive
without Debian.

From maintenance prospective libav seems to be a liability. We have to carry
patches for packages where upstreams are not too concerned about supporting
libav. I maintain 4 packages with patches to replace `ffmpeg` with `avconv`
(blktrace, seekwatcher, synfig, zoneminder). I maintain at least four
packages depending on libav libraries:

  * xpra: upstream cares for other distros so he supports ffmpeg and
(reluctantly) libav because we are using it. He prefers ffmpeg. Packaging
contains three libav-specific patches.

  * tupi: was using ffmpeg but switched to libav following our trend. Still
builds with ffmpeg (as far as I'm aware).

  * synfig: upstream could not care less about libav; supports only ffmpeg and
fails to build with libav. Also contains patch to replace `ffmpeg` with
`avconv`. We build synfig without ffmpeg/libav libraries at all.

 * zoneminder: supports both but upstream once commented that Staying on top
of the libav/ffmpeg mess seems to be a full time job in and of itself.

Also in the light of past libav transitions and deprecations that required
multiple changes in Debian and upstream I know no upstream who is happy to
support libav.

All my experience tells me that with ffmpeg we shall be just as good as with
libav, or better.

I am not qualified for technical comparison between ffmpeg and libav. My
assessment is purely from maintenance prospective, both in Debian and
upstream. Although I have no first hand experience with ffmpeg I tend to
support switching to ffmpeg because upstreams that I'm in touch with seems to
prefer ffmpeg over libav.

Bug#784937: xcfa: FTBFS in Ubuntu due to underlinking

2015-05-10 Thread Logan Rosen
Package: xcfa
Version: 5.0.1-1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch
User: ubuntu-de...@lists.ubuntu.com
Usertags: origin-ubuntu wily ubuntu-patch

Dear Maintainer,

xcfa currently FTBFS due to underlinking with ld --as-needed [1].

In Ubuntu, the attached patch was applied to achieve the following:

  * debian/patches/link-libm.patch: Link xcfa_cli against -lm to fix FTBFS with
ld --as-needed.
  * debian/{control,rules}: Use dh-autoreconf to apply the above change.

Thanks for considering the patch.

Re: test build on foreign arch

2015-05-10 Thread Bálint Réczey
Hi,

2015-05-10 9:30 GMT+02:00 Jaromír Mikeš mira.mi...@gmail.com:
 Hi,

I would like to test build of package on foreign arch (mips mipsel and
 powerpc).
Is there some easy way to do it ?

Or is it fine to do it by uploading to unstable?
IMO it is perfectly fine especially if the package is small and you
expect it to build.

If you don't want to do that, there is qemu-user-static:
Package: qemu-user-static
...
Description-en: QEMU user mode emulation binaries (static version)
QEMU is a fast processor emulator: currently the package supports
ARM, CRIS, i386, M68k (ColdFire), MicroBlaze, MIPS, PowerPC, SH4,
SPARC and x86-64 emulation. By using dynamic translation it achieves
reasonable speed while being easy to port on new host CPUs.
 .
This package provides the user mode emulation binaries, built
statically. In this mode QEMU can launch Linux processes compiled for
 one CPU on another CPU.

---BeginMessage---
Package: vlc
Version: 2.1.2-2
Severity: important

Hi!

Starting somewhere around VLC 2.x, I experience video stuttering problems on
many files, mostly = 720P, MKV/H.264+AC3 (almost all such files), but not only
them - for example I also experience it on some MPEG2 720x576 files (mpeg
container, mpeg2 video and audio codecs). HW acceleration is disabled, the
problem always reproduces at least on 2 different Debian machines (laptop and
PC, both 32-bit and both with snd-hda-intel kernel module), and on both
debian-multimedia and normal VLC/libav* packages. The same files play without
problem in mplayer/mplayer2/mpv.

vlc -vvv output shows many ES_OUT_SET_(GROUP_)PCR  is called too late errors;
on each error the video playback temporarily stops (stutters).

...
[0x87a0a30] main audio output warning: playback way too early (-563272):
playing silence
[0x87a0a30] main audio output debug: inserting 27037 zeroes
[0xf4c11150] main input error: ES_OUT_SET_(GROUP_)PCR is called too late
(pts_delay increased to 300 ms)
[0xf4c11150] main input error: ES_OUT_RESET_PCR called
[0xf4c11150] main input debug: Buffering 0%
...
[0xf0c45bc0] main decoder debug: End of audio preroll
...
[0xf4c11150] main input debug: Stream buffering done (334 ms in 3 ms)
[0xf4c11150] main input debug: Decoder buffering done in 0 ms
[0x87a0a30] main audio output debug: inserting 9553 zeroes
[0xebc00c58] main vout display debug: auto hiding mouse cursor
[0xf0c36aa8] main decoder debug: End of video preroll
[0xf4c11150] main input error: ES_OUT_SET_(GROUP_)PCR is called too late
(pts_delay increased to 320 ms)
[0xf4c11150] main input error: ES_OUT_RESET_PCR called
...

The key point is, first I've thought it's some video decoder problem, but I was
wrong!

I've tried different setups and discovered that the problem is in _direct_ ALSA
sound output - i.e. it works all good with PulseAudio! (direct PA; didn't check
alsa piped to PA). Also it works with sound disabled or if the discard all
samples audio device is selected (so it's not an audio decoder problem).

I don't want to have PulseAudio installed, just because for me it's just a
useless wrapper for ALSA (everything always worked fine without it) and because
I don't like Lennart's creations. :-)

In any case I think it's a bug if ALSA output doesn't work in VLC...

Is it a known problem? Do you have any ideas of fixing it? I've found many
stuttering problems in VLC bug database, but it seems nobody tried to check
for audio output problems...

Package: vlc
Version: 1.1.3-1
Severity: normal

Sometimes when playing DVDs in VLC, the audio will pop periodically at a
regular interval. This doesn't happen with every DVD, nor does it always happen
every time with the same DVD. I could sometimes fix it by relaunching VLC or
ejecting and re-inserting the DVD, sometimes it doesn't make a difference. A
few notable features of my configuration are I am using spdif passthrough with
ALSA for the audio and I am forcing vsync with the radeon drivers.

 thanks

When using S/PDIF passthrough, there is no way to resample. Since VLC syncs
 on
the CPU clock rather than the audio card buffer, slight drift may cause
clicks. There is currently no solution, other than not to use passthrough.

Closing as wontfix.

Is there some easy way to do it ?

Maybe we could get you access to the porterboxes?

Or is it fine to do it by uploading to unstable?

I would use experimental instead of unstable, but sometimes I've done it myself.

Playing an .avi file results in seemingly random crashes at non reproducable
points. Sometimes there is even no crash while playing a whole file.

The debug info generated by -vvv option of vlc is:

 Howdy,
using vlc by samba, when network swings (wifi network) often vlc stops to
play audio (but there's a progress of audio file).

How do you access the file on the samba share? Is it directly through vlc's
samba plugin or via a cifs or gvfs mount?

Is the situation better if you increase the buffer size?

Cheers
