thanks for your bug report.

Since

  $ dpkg -S /usr/lib/ruby/vendor_ruby/soap/mapping/encodedregistry.rb
  ruby-soap4r: /usr/lib/ruby/vendor_ruby/soap/mapping/encodedregistry.rb

we can conclude that the warnings come from the ruby-soap4r library.

And indeed, a bug report (#889713) had already been filed against
package ruby-soap4r and closed by an upload to Debian unstable
(ruby-soap4r/2.0.5-4).

I am reassigning your bug report to package ruby-soap4r, with the
intention to merge it with #889713...

Dear Debian Ruby Extras Maintainers
I am reassigning a [bug](https://bugs.debian.org/888649) to package
ruby-httpclient, since a user of apt-listbugs is having issues with an
IPv6 connection.
It seems that a similar issue shows up without ruby-httpclient (when
apt-listbugs uses the HTTP library from Ruby standard library), but
ruby-httpclient produces a more verbose error message.

I have too little experience in debugging HTTP connection issues, and
zero experience with IPv6: I am not sure whether the problem lies in
some IPv6 link misconfiguration or in an actual bug of the Ruby HTTP
client libraries.

Could you please help the user in the investigation?

Hello Debian Ruby Extras Maintainers,
I am reassigning a [bug report] filed against package apt-listbugs,
where the submitter (Vincent) would like to be able to configure the
SOAP http timeout, in order to shorten his wait for the fallback to the
first IP address that works.

Unfortunately, from a test that I suggested, it turned out that setting
the protocol.http.* timeout options for ruby-soap4r does not cause the
expected behavior.

During my summer vacations (and after them), I made some attempts to
search for documentation about these ruby-soap4r timeout, but I failed
to find a clear explanation of what actually happens when one of these
timeouts is reached.

Hence, I am asking to you: why does the described behavior (see the bug
log) happen? should ruby-soap4r behave as Vincent expected?

Please clarify and/or fix the ruby-soap4r behavior and/or forward this
bug report upstream.

Hello,
I noticed that rxgettext, when used with the --wrap option, wraps
long message lines by breaking words.

I think this is awkward and should be avoided.
Wrapping of long message lines should be performed by searching the
nearest whitespace before the page width boundary and breaking there.

I prepared a patch to implement the desired behavior.
It is attached (file wrap-without-breaking-words.diff.gz).

My patch only changes the regular expression used to perform the
line scanning.
The new regexp consists of three alternatives:

  * the first alternative deals with chunks which reach the end of
a line and whose length is less than or equal to the page width:
these chunks will not be broken any further

  * the second alternative deals with the (rare) chunks which consist
of a single word whose length is greater than or equal to the page
width: these chunks will be considered as unbreakable (even though
this means that the output will include a line longer than the
page width, as a rare exception to the general wrapping rule)

  * the third alternative deals with chunks ending with a whitespace
and whose length is less than or equal to the page width: these
chunks will be as large as possible (regexp repetition matching
is greedy by default) and will not be broken any further

The regexp behavior is shown in the attached little test script
(file test.rb.gz).

Please apply my patch and/or forward it upstream.

[DRE-maint] Bug#827835: What's the status of this RC bug?

I must confess that I am beginning to be mildly worried about
bug #827835: this serious bug report was filed back on June,
the 21st and appears to be still unaddressed without any
visible activity.

Package ruby-xmlparser risks to be autoremoved (along with its
reverse dependencies, among which apt-listbugs, which I maintain),
because of this bug.

Could you please clarify what is the status of this RC bug?
Is it going to be fixed soon?

I apologize for bothering you, but I am beginning to worry about
bug #819081, which risks to cause the auto-removal of ruby-xmlparser
from testing.
Its reverse dependencies would also be kicked out, and I am the
maintainer of apt-listbugs (as you probably know), which depends on
ruby-xmlparser...

To my non-expert eyes, bug #819081 looks almost trivial to fix.
Nonetheless, I fail to see any (public) activity towards its
resolution...
Are there any difficulties that I don't understand?

Please clarify and/or (better yet) please fix this bug as soon as
possible.

forwarding it upstream and for implementing a patch!

I see that the forwarded report has been closed. I have a doubt,
though: would the patch fix the issue when LANGUAGE='it' LC_CTYPE=C ?

On a second thought, I am under the impression that it should be the
responsibility of the SOAP library to return UTF-8 strings with the
encoding correctly set, so that Ruby knows how to handle them.

I am reassigning the bug report to package ruby-soap4r, in the hope
that the actual issue may be fixed there.


Please note that, if I force apt-listbugs to interpret the subject line
of bugs as UTF-8 encoded strings (by modifying a single line of code
in  /usr/share/apt-listbugs/debian/bug.rb , see the attached diff),
the issue with
  $ LC_ALL=sv_SE.UTF-8 apt-listbugs list sound-juicer
seems to vanish.
However, I am afraid that this would *not* be a general solution: what
if, for some other bug subject line, the BTS SOAP interface returns a
string which is not UTF-8 encoded? I think that funny characters would
be displayed by apt-listbugs, if it took every subject line as always
encoded in UTF-8... Or am I wrong?
This is the reasoning that made me think the issue is actually in
ruby-soap4r. I hope it may be fixed there in a proper way.

after installing ruby/1:1.9.3.1, the alternatives for /usr/bin/ruby and
similar links seem to have been replaced by direct links.

As a consequence, ruby-switch stopped working:

  # ruby-switch --list

Is there a working strategy for setting the default system-wide Ruby
interpreter in a clean and practical way?
Should ruby-switch be adapted to the new strategy or should it be
removed from Debian sid?

However, you seem to experience the same exact issue that has already
been reported twice yesterday:

Those two bug reports were reassigned to ruby-locale and merged with
http://bugs.debian.org/733150
which was later closed.

I am reassigning and merging this bug report too.
As a consequence, this report will be closed.

 
 The only workaround I found is to disable apt-listbugs (file
 /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/10apt-listbugs), because apt-listbugs itself can not be
 removed from system.

You should be able to re-enable apt-listbugs, after upgrading
ruby-gettext to version 3.0.3-1

 Downgrading ruby-locale to 2.0.9-1 fixes this problem for me.

Well, ruby-locale is not a direct dependency of apt-listbugs.
Package apt-listbugs depends on ruby-gettext, which, in its turn,
depends on ruby-locale.

The problem seems to be that ruby-locale/2.1.0-1 breaks ruby-gettext,
causing apt-listbugs to exit with errors.

Indeed, this same issue has been reported against ruby-locale in the
meanwhile:
http://bugs.debian.org/733150
Having an RC bug filed against ruby-locale (with proper version
tracking) will prevent its migration into testing and should let
apt-listbugs users know about the issue and give them an opportunity to
pin ruby-locale before upgrading (that's what apt-listbugs is for, as
you know!).

I am reassigning this bug report and merging it with #733150.

I hope the issue may be fixed soon.

Please cooperate with ruby-soap4r maintainers to find a solution, if
you are able to help.

I can understand, but you should be able to use apt-listbugs itself to
work around the issues: after downgrading ruby-locale to version
2.0.9-1, you may use apt-listbugs to pin it to that version until this
bug is fixed.
For the two other bugs, please see the above described suggestions.

it would be great if rxgettext had a command-line option to specify
what should be put in the output .pot file in stead of the YEAR
in the copyright notice.

In other words, let's consider (again) the test case described in bug
#684182 [1].

If I create the .pot with rxgettext:

  $ rxgettext --add-comments=TRANSLATORS --no-wrap \
  --copyright-holder=Francesco Poli \
  --package-name=myapplication --package-version=0.1 \
  --msgid-bugs-address=addr...@example.com \
  myapplication.rb -o myapplication_RXGETTEXT.pot

the copyright notice in the output .pot is:

  $ grep Copyright myapplication_RXGETTEXT.pot 
  # Copyright (C) YEAR Francesco Poli

As far as I know, there's no way to tell rxgettext to replace that
YEAR with, say, 2012, 1999-2013, or 1998, 2005-2007, 2012.

I think it would be useful to have some command-line option to do
that. Something like

  $ rxgettext ... --copyright-year=1999-2013 ...

Please implement this additional feature and/or forward this bug
report upstream.

I noticed something really weird in rxgettext.
It seems that its output .pot file includes location paths relative to
the destination directory, rather than to the current working directory!

I am not sure this causes problems with ruby-gettext library, but it
sure looks unusual and awkward.

I'll show the issue with my usual test case, described in
bug #684182 [1].

Let's start with the example application in a directory:

As you can see the message at line 33 is split up into two strings
for easier reading by translators. This is done since the message
is actually intended to be printed onto two separate lines; so it makes
sense that the translator has the opportunity to see it formatted in
a way closer to how the program user will see it.

Unfortunately, rxgettext does not do the same:

That's awkward, I tested localization several times during the
development cycle of apt-listbugs/0.1.10 and I have never found any
issues (even with German localization).

Anyway, the localization is handled by ruby-gettext and ruby-locale:
apt-listbugs itself does not directly manage the locale environment
variables or the encoding names.
I am hence reassigning your bug report to ruby-locale, as I think the
error is generated by that library (or maybe by ruby-gettext?).

I see that you set some locale environment variables to de_DE.utf8.
Shouldn't it be de_DE.UTF-8?

I've just checked with

  # LC_ALL=de_DE.UTF-8 aptitude install some_package

and both aptitude and apt-listbugs ran correctly with output in German.
Please try and set your locale to de_DE.UTF-8: it should make
apt-listbugs work correctly.

I also tested

  # LC_ALL=de_DE.utf8 aptitude install some_package

The awkward result is that aptitude seems to run correctly with output
in German, while apt-listbugs fails with the error you experienced!
Maybe there's some Ruby-specific peculiarity (or bug!) in the locale
handling that prevents de_DE.utf8 from being accepted as a valid
setting (apt-listbugs is written in Ruby, while aptitude is not!).

I hope the maintainers of ruby-locale / ruby-gettext will soon figure
out what's wrong...

I was under the impression that the issue only affected a few users
with an unusual (and manually set) configuration (*.utf8) that could
be easily changed to an equivalent working one (*.UTF-8).

If the *.utf8 locale variables are set by gdm3, we seem to have a big
problem!

I've just performed some further testing and it seems that the issue is
triggered by the switch from Ruby 1.8 to Ruby 1.9:

# apt-listbugs -v
0.1.10
# LC_ALL=de_DE.utf8 ruby1.8 /usr/sbin/apt-listbugs -h

If this is all confirmed, please feel free to raise the severity of
this bug report again and to file a new bug report against
apt-listbugs/0.1.10.
This new bug report could be titled something like should not migrate
into testing until the .utf8 issue is solved, and should be of RC
severity and be blocked by 725496.

I apologize, if I gave the impression that I wanted to neglect severe
issues!

BTW, do you have any idea of how the issue could be fixed?

Please take a look at the other messages in the bug log [1] (sorry for
not Cc-ing you): this seems to be set by gdm3... You seem to be in good
company with possibly many other users with similar *.utf8 settings.

 So the issue is: for some reason, gdm3 will set $LANG set to xx_YY.utf8
 to old user accounts, what triggers this bug, while new users will have
 $LANG set to xx_YY.UTF-8 which is handled correctly by ruby-gettext.

Awkward...

 
 The underlying problem is how ruby-gettext maps the current locale into
 a valid Ruby encoding name (UTF-8 and 'utf-8' are valid Ruby encoding
 names, 'utf8' without the dash is not).

This clarifies things a bit, thanks.

 
 You can workaround this by clearing the Language= setting in
 /var/lib/AccountsService/users/$USER - in the next login, you will get
 LANG=xx_YY.UTF-8 in your environment (even though `locale -a` will still
 list it as xx_YY.utf8). I did this on my system, but telling every user
 out there to do this is not reallistic.

In the meanwhile we can tell the original bug report submitter about
this! I re-added him to the Cc list.

 
 Anyway, I reported this issue a couple of weeks ago and upstream fixed
 it quickly after that:

Hi Hleb, thanks for following up.

It's definitely possible that I am misunderstanding something here,
but... I was under the impression that compatibility with GNU gettext
was a design goal of ruby-gettext.

What's the point of doubling the backslashes in newline characters,
anyway?
I thought that the strings to be translated should be inserted
basically unchanged into the .pot file...

 Plural-Forms doesn't seems to be a good idea)

Definitely not a good idea, in my humble opinion.
And what's the rationale, anyway?
I think GNU gettext supports Plural-Forms, hence you won't get GNU
gettext compatibility, if you remove Plural-Forms.
Quite the opposite, I would say.

Or am I completely off-track?

I believe that this issue is caused by the ruby-gettext library.
It may or may not be the same bug as #690572...

As a consequence, I am reassigning your report to the ruby-gettext
package, but I am leaving to its maintainers to decide whether it

Since this field will soon become obsolete and will stop working [1],

thanks for your kind bug report.

I understand your setup (and the rationale behind it...).
I assume you have LC_ALL unset.

 
 As of recently (I suspect starting from version 0.1.8, which carries the
 changelong line improved internationalization), apt-listbugs stopped 
 handling
 the above combination properly. In particular, apt-listbugs outputs localized
 messages in italian, whereas it should not.

The improved internationalization change you are referring to is actually:

I don't think it can alter anything with respect to the locale
environment variable handling.
I have even reviewed all the commits from apt-listbugs/0.1.7 to
apt-listbugs/0.1.8 and I haven't spotted anything that could be blamed
for this behavior change.

 Here's a simple aptitude session,
 where apt-listbugs is invoked as the first apt-get hook:

I can't see anything in apt-listbugs *itself* that directly handles
locale environment variables. I believe that this dirty work is
delegated to the ruby-gettext library.
I am consequently reassigning your bug report to the ruby-gettext
package.

I hope that the maintainers of ruby-gettext will manage to investigate
and fix this regression soon.

[DRE-maint] Bug#688450: rdtool: misplaces a .TP in output man page (with ruby1.8)

Hello and thanks for maintaining rdtool in Debian!

I found a case where rd2 seems to produce a badly formed man page
(when run with ruby1.8).
I prepared a minimal test case to reproduce the bug.

  $ tar xvf frob_man_page.tar.gz
  frob
  frob.1

In this example, frob.1 is obtained on my system from frob with the
following command:

  $ ruby1.8 /usr/bin/rd2 -r rd/rd2man-lib.rb -o frob frob
  /usr/bin/rd2: output to frob.1...

If displayed with man

  $ man ./frob.1

the fake man page shows a spurious .TP at the end of the line
'To exit, use the special line STOP.'
The successive option (-d) is wrongly indented.

Applying the following patch to frob.1 seems to cure the problem
for the output man page:

I prepared a small test case to reproduce it.

But the language is actually Ruby, not Python.
Hence, rgettext should be the tool of choice.

Where is the string from line 33 ?!?
It seems that it was wrongly skipped, since it contains hash
symbols (#)...
I think that this should not happen.

Hello again!

I noticed another bug in rgettext.

Please see the test case described in bug #684182 [1].

In that test case, a comment for translators is included for the
string from line 31.
xgettext correctly places this comment before the msgid from line 31.
On the other hand, rgettext also copies it before all subsequent
translatable messages (until another comment for translators is found,
which never happens in this minimal test case...).

I think that this should not happen.

Please fix this bug and/or forward this bug report upstream.

Wait, I probably failed to explain myself clearly!

Editing /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/10apt-listbugs is useful to work around the
issue while you are installing/upgrading packages (for instance with
aptitude safe-upgrade).
Does installing/upgrading packages work for you with this workaround?

When you manually invoke apt-listbugs from the command line, you have
to manually add the env LC_ALL=C anyway!
As you told me, issuing

$ env LC_ALL=C apt-listbugs list apt-listbugs

works for you.
If you like, you can create an alias for env LC_ALL=C apt-listbugs ...

 
  For reasons explained below, I think the workaround may be made even
  less invasive: when you edit /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/10apt-listbugs , you
  may change the line
 
  DPkg::Pre-Install-Pkgs {/usr/sbin/apt-listbugs apt || exit 10;};

I don't think so...

If I understand correctly, you are saying that editing
/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/10apt-listbugs and adding env LC_ALL=C makes
apt-listbugs work correctly during package installation/upgrade,
but, on the other hand, adding env LC_NUMERIC=C instead breaks the
invocation of apt-listbugs during package installation/upgrade.

Can you confirm this?
