There are some pretty good web based resources for learning gimp,
starting with the gimp tutorials at http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/

As far as vector based drawing programs, inkscape is by far the best for
"making pretty logos and decals", etc.

Dude! Can you suggest a good spot for our Advanced Topics meeting?
Beer selection was one of our prime criteria! And I am sure you have
much better public transportation there. ;-)

Thanks Neal, very good to hear Ooma is working well for ya. I think I'm
going to switch us to Ooma. Also, that info you sent on using the house
phone wiring should come in very handy.

Cheers,

Same as any other VOIP line.

Use the existing house wiring AFTER disconnecting from the external
telephone network at the NID:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_interface_device
http://www.homephonewiring.com/nid.html

Open the NID (regular screwdriver required) and unplug what look like
short phone cord loopback cables plugged into "TEST" jacks. This
isolates your inside wiring from the phone company.

Plug the Ooma / Vonage box into any telephone jack near an internet
feed, hook it up to the internet, plug in the power adapter and there
ya go, at least in theory.

I've had Ooma since Woot ran a special six months ago. Over this time
it has worked fairly well, at least as well as the Comcast cable modem
service. I think I've only had to power cycle the Ooma box once or
twice when it wasn't a Comcast issue. The taxes-only minimum service
is missing a couple things I really miss but not enough to upgrade to
the $120/year Premier service. The thing I miss most is voicemail
email forwarding.

It rains a lot. Great microbrew pubs. Within an hour's drive one can be at
the Pacific coast, well into the Cascade Mountains, in the high desert, and
(of course!) there's the magnificent Columbia River Gorge and its
leaf-clearing east winds.

What I've read from others is the broad and diverse expertise of list
subscribers and the willingness of those with answers or advice to provide
them makes this group unique. Perhaps it's the combination of location (in
the silicon temperate rain forest), friendly and helpful culture, and
support/advocacy of F/OSS that keeps us from being insular and isolated.

Join in more frequently. I'm sure you have contributions that are
worthwhile.

A very long time ago I had a Laserjet 4MV, which came with Postscript,
but no PPD file. I used the PPD file for a Linotronic 300 and it worked
fine. The Linotronic PPD file offered features that I couldn't use, but
it was otherwise perfectly functional. My point is that if you need a
PPD file, just find one for the most similar printer and it will work.

For that matter, a PPD file is just a plain text file, usually only a
couple pages long. You can just roll your own. I have not created my
own PPD file, but once I had to edit one, and it was trivial. That is,
it is trivial once you figure out the syntax. And even that is usually
pretty simple. For example, suppose your printer can do 600 dpi or 1200
dpi, but the PPD file only offers 600 dpi. You open the PPD file and
find a line that says (I am making this up) "DPI=600." So you add a
space plus "1200" at the end and try it. If it doesn't work, add a
comma. Or get several PPD files and open them up to see how they are
written. And once you have a good PPD file for the HL2240D, upload it
to the CUPS folks so that everyone can share.

I have been lurking on this list for more than a year (not posting

beer available here. I believe that at least one of the members of
this crowd also lurked in this forum from Melbourne, Australia

We've had & continue to have a lot of Comcast service outages where we lose
internet, telly, & phone. The internet goes out most often, then comes the
telly, then the phone service. When we call Comcast about it, they act as
if that's normal, & want to charge us extra to come fix it!
