                                 by
                           Keith Lofstrom

    Since 2005, Randall Munroe's xkcd.com, "A webcomic of romance,
sarcasm, math, and language" has covered many topics dear to FOSS
advocates and has been discussed on the PLUG list many times.
The #1000 comic is expected to appear Friday January 6 just after
midnight eastern time, making Thursday January 5 "xkcd1k eve".

Join us for a celebration of XKCD1K eve at the PLUG general
meeting.  We can display and discuss/explain some of the
Free/Libre/Open source cartoons, the various weblogs and forums
that have sprung up around them, draw our own cartoons (Keith
will bring art paper and pens), perhaps discuss the technology
    of web comics.

Homework:  bring your own list of favorite xkcd cartoons, and
we will display them at the meeting.  Bring your artistic and
"right brained" friends.  Bring your black porkpie hat.  If
you are Richard Stallman, bring your katana sword.

Afterwards, at the Lucky Lab Brew Pub at 1945 nw Quimby, we
can welcome comic #1000, just after 9pm Pacific Time.  Or not,
Randall is a trickster and may give us strip #1025, avoiding
    the definition the size of a "kilo" ( http://xkcd.com/394/ ) .

Re: [PLUG] Linux equivalent to Camtasia

2011-11-06 Thread David Mandel
There seem to be a lot of tools for doing screencasting in Linux
including Istanbul, recordMyDesktop, xvidcap, wink, pyvnc2swf,
byzanz, vnc2swf, ffmpeg, and a few others. Unlike Camtasia most of
the Linux solutions do not include video/audio editing software in the
package so if you need that you need to move the output of these
packages into openshot, LiVES, keno, or other editing software.

Personally, I use ffmpeg which is a nice simple command line tool.
I generally use commands something like:

 xrandr -s 1280x720
 To reduce my screen resolution.
My computer just isn't fast enough to capture things are full
resolution without an
unacceptable lag between the audio and video. I can avoid this
by reducing my capture
rate (fps) or by reducing my resolution or by capturing the video
and audio separately and
resyncing them in openshot or other editing software. Of these
choices, I find simply
reducing the screen resolution to be the best compromise for my
particular situation.

sleep 870; xmessage -g -125+60 Time for Intermission
This sends me a message telling me when to end my video after 14
min 30 sec.

sleep 5; ffmpeg -t 00:14:59 -f oss -i /dev/dsp -f x11grab -s 1280x720
-r 25 -i :0.0 MyVideo.avi
This creates a 15 minute video (unless I manually end it earlier).

This system seems to work pretty well - although once in a while I
wish I could pause a video
in the middle of it and go back and restart it. (Of course, I can
effectively do this by cutting and
splicing in my editing software, but I avoid editing as much as
possible because editing is very
slow and time consuming.)

Hope this helps,

David Mandel

Jim,

I'm glad you wrote to me directly as I wasn't sure what to think about
this at first; but your rules make this look like a legitimate contest
that is actually very interesting. Thus, I am forwarding your posting

Re: [PLUG] Local server reseller

2011-10-27 Thread David Mandel
Thanks for the information. I use lots of second hand equipment and
the number of sources for this seems to be going down as new low end
equipment becomes so cheap. Still, I think it is more environmentally
friendly to use recycled equipment and sort of COOL as well. I will
definitely check this guys out.

David Mandel

P.S. I love my 1990 Dodge Caravan. Only has 250,000 miles on it.
Should be good for another couple hundred thousand; although it seems
to require a new transmission every 100,000 miles or so.

[PLUG] Regarding the posting: Please leave the PLUG list and don't attend PLUG events in the future.

2011-10-10 Thread David Mandel
Please ignore the subject as this letter was written to ONE person and
I forgot to make the subject appropriate for CCs.

However, I did mean to post a copy of this letter to the list as I
want everyone to know that action is being taken.

Also, PLEASE: no more postings or responses about these events. They
only clutter the list.

If you have something to contribute, write to me personally at
p...@davidmandel.com.

Meanwhile, let get back to doing Open Source Software.

[PLUG] Please leave the PLUG list and don't attend PLUG events in the future.

2011-10-10 Thread David Mandel
Michael,

I'm very reluctant to write this letter, but ...

The main PLUG mailing list is for technical, business, and
philosophical discussions relating to Linux and other Open Source
Software.

The PLUG-Talk list is for discussions on most any topic so long as
they are civil and done with tolerance.

Unfortunately, you have consistently violated these rules. (Yes,
others have violated these rules as well and I will be dealing with
them as well; but you have been the worst violator.)

Your letter with the subject of "Ban me? Ban yourselves." was the
final straw. The PLUG community feels threatened by your statements.

Unfortunately, at this point I must take action to save the PLUG
community as many members are unsubscribing from the lists.

Thus, I am dropping you from all PLUG mailing lists effective immediately.
Please do not resubscribe, either using your current name/email or any
other name/email.
You are not welcome to post to the PLUG list under any name.
Please do not attend PLUG events as some of our members feel
threatened and may call police.

Re: [PLUG] Censorship... -> PLUG vs. POSUG

2011-09-12 Thread David Mandel
Michael,

Don't pull any speakers.
I don't really think anyone is advocating any changes from the current
system where we
occasionally have speakers on non-Linux, non-Unix Open Source related topics.
Indeed, this may become even more frequent in the future as Linux and
the BSDs and
other Unix OSs become more ubiquitous and are simply taken for granted.

Just to clarify things; PLUG does stand for the Portland Linux/Unix
Group and we do occasionally delve into Open Source topics that have
little to do with either Linux or Unix. On the other hand, this is
being sent simply to clarify the role and mission of PLUG, and isn't
meant as a statement about this particular thread in the mailing list.

[PLUG] PLUG needs speakers!

2011-08-27 Thread David Mandel
Once again PLUG needs speakers - including for next Thursday. If
anyone has a talk or any ideas on who I should ask about speaking,
please let me know. I would actually like to get a list of people
scheduled in advance so we didn't need to worry about this every month
for a while.

Re: [PLUG] Linuxfest Northwest / LUG list

2011-08-27 Thread David Mandel
Jason,

Linux Fund generally drives a minivan to LinuxFest NW with a couple of
us and a couple other people and lots of baggage for our booth and
what not. We would be interested in enlarging our minivan or joining
someone in a small bus or what ever. However, we would want to make
sure that we had transportation that would allow us to use cheap
hotels and go to an office supply store for whatever we need while we
are at LinuxFest. We would be happy to continue paying what we do now
without regard to what others pay. We just want to see people attend
the event.

Thank you John.
You should be able to get an exhibitor pass.
Also, Russell is correct about the setup times.

[PLUG] PLUG at OSCON -- This week

2011-07-23 Thread David Mandel
As in previous years, PLUG will have a booth at OSCON this year. I
believe the expo hall is open next Tuesday evening and all day
Wednesday and Thursday. We will some help staffing it. Also, we can
use any fliers or whatever people can bring.

And as always, other Oregon Open Source Groups are more than welcome
to put their literature on our table and help us staff the booth.

[PLUG] LinuxFest Northwest - April 30 - May 1 in Bellingham, Washington

2011-04-20 Thread David Mandel
Just to remind everyone.

LinuxFest Northwest will be April 30 - May 1 in Bellingham,
Washington. Bellingham is in northwest Washington, not far from the
Canadian border. The conference is free, on a weekend, in a beautiful
little harbor city with lots of spring flowers and fine beer right on
the Puget Sound.

See: http://linuxfestnorthwest.org for details.

[PLUG] Problems with Virtual Box

2011-04-20 Thread David Mandel
Have people had problems with Virtual Box on openSuSE or other Linux?
Or have I simply screwed something up with my particular installation
of Virtual Box?

I originally used Virtual Box with Windows 7 as the host OS and was
able to install and run most any OS I wanted including openSuSE,
Fedora, Ubuntu, several different versions of Knoppix, PC-BSD, and
openSolaris with few problems.

Now that I'm using openSuSE 11.3 as the host OS, I have been able to
install a good working version of Windows XP, but seem to have major
problems installing and running other OSs. I may have been successful
with Ubuntu, and haven't tried openSuSE or Fedora; but have major
problems using Knoppix and PC-BSD.

Are problems like this common with virtual box in Linux?

I'm short on time and almost ready to go back to VM-Ware server which
has served me well over the years.

Mike,

I haven't responded, because I don't have much experience using
iptables directly. Once it gets beyond setting setting up a simple
chain of two or three iptable commands, I have always gone to some
fancy ready made script.

Hi!

We're having a civic unconference April 1 (starting 5pm) and April 2
(9am-6pm-ish)

We've got sponsors providing food and drink both days, and lots of
projects lined up for hackery on the 2nd. Hope to see you there!

Please distribute!

Join us April 1-2 for the PDX11 Civic Unconference. Please RSVP!

http://pdx11unconference.eventbrite.com/

This community meeting is open to all!

Since the inaugural PDX11 meeting in December 2010, three teams have
been working separately to meet their goals. Everyone will reconvene
on April 1-2 for the PDX11 Civic Unconference to bring the teams back
together to share, discuss and hack on the software that supports the
goals of PDX11.

Each team will present their charter and discuss their initial
findings regarding available resources and the management tools needed
to bring it all together.

PDX11 is also assembling developers in the Hackathon community to work
on several key pieces of software including: Calagator, ePDX.org,
CivicApps inspired projects like PDXAPI, and open source Trimet data
processing applications. They also need developers who can pair up and
hack codes like Ruby, Python, PHP and Javascript. Non-technical work
includes documentation of resources, blogging, data entry, testing,
and feature requests.

We put together a detailed Q&A here: http://pdx11.org/node/2919

You'll find out:
* Where to RSVP?
* Where will this event be held?
* Why should I attend?
* Well, if an unconference isn't planned out ahead of time, what can I
expect to hear about if I attend?
* Where can I find out more about the Hackathon?
* What is PDX11 about again?
* When will this event take place?
* What is an unconference exactly?
* Can I get a more detailed schedule?

And there's an RSVP page so we can plan for food & drink:

http://pdx11unconference.eventbrite.com/

We are also seeking sponsors! Please contact me if your company is
willing to pitch in.

Thanks!

Re: [PLUG] laptop, eSATAp, bare drive

2011-01-02 Thread David Mandel
I suppose I would try pretty much what you have mentioned.

I sometimes use usb drives, but as you said are slow - and some of
mine are SLOW, SLOW, SLOW as I still have some usb 1 left.

Recently, I bought an inexpensive Toshiba laptop. I picked it over
several alternatives, because it had one of those USB/SATA ports built
in. I use it with a normal full size hard disk (large capacity) in a
case that requires external power. It is a pain to carry, but the
performance is great. Couldn't be more pleased with it - although it
would be even better if I used a laptop disk and got my power from the
PC some way. (By the way, I used to use a passport drive that used
two usb connectors - one for the signal and one for power.)

                       Open Source Desktop Publishing
                                    with
                                  Scribus

                                     by

                             John Jason Jordan

Scribus is just a few years old, but has already achieved
most of the features of the expensive commercial desktop
publishing apps, and a few they don't have. If you need to
do fliers, brochures, or whole books, Scribus is now the
    preferred tool.

The presentation will start with a brief introduction to
some of the terms of desktop publishing, especially how to
get your computer to produce something that a print shop can
put on a press. This will include matters such as typography,
color management, banding and line screens, transparency,
    imposition, and several other issues.

Then we will spend a few minutes on an overview of Scribus,
how it is different from word processors, TeX, and advantages
and disadvantages.  This will include the basic features of
Scribus, including typographical controls, master pages, render
frames, PDF forms, PDF export options, scripting, collect for
output, and lots more. It will also cover how Scribus is the
end tool in a process that starts with other programs.

Finally we will reproduce the PLUG flier that was created
in Scribus.  This will be presented on the screen showing
the steps and features of Scribus necessary to produce it.
Each member of the audience will have a paper copy of the
flier to assist in following the process.

Re: [PLUG] Clinic Sunday!

2010-11-21 Thread David Mandel
To any of my students who may be attending this month's clinic:

I promised to attend the clinics during Fall term.
However, I can not make it today.
As you know, it may snow or get very cold in the next couple days.
I have lots to do on my farm to prepare for possible freezing weather.
Better to keep pipes from freezing than to have to repair broken pipes.

[PLUG] David Mandel won't be at the fall PLUG meetings

2010-10-04 Thread David Mandel
Hello,

I'm teaching a class on Thursday evenings at Portland Community
College this term.
As a result, I won't be making the PLUG meetings, but that won't
change anything.
Michael Dexter will lead the meetings and we have the following
meetings scheduled:

Oct 7, 2010 - Dale Zeutenhorst will present on eBox.
Nov 4, 2010 - Dan Carrere will present - He gave me a topic, but I
seem to have forgotten it.
Dec 2, 2010 - John Jordan will present on Scribus.

My class at PCC finishes a bit after 9:00 PM, so I should be able to
make BEER after the meetings.
Also, I intend to attend the clinics this term.

  Sincerely,
  David Mandel

Re: [PLUG] Ubuntu question

2010-09-03 Thread David Mandel
This is what I thought, but I could say for sure as I have personally
installed Ubuntu in a long time.

In any case, Craig wrote back to say he had solved the problem.

Thank you everyone.

[PLUG] Ubuntu question

2010-09-03 Thread David Mandel
Craig Wojcik sent me the following question.
I don't use Ubuntu very often and don't know the answer off hand and
don't have time to do research on this at the moment.

Would some Ubuntu user answer Craigs question for me.
Send the answer directly to Craig as he isn't (yet) a PLUG member.

THE QUESTION IS:

David,

I am the person that spoke to you at the fair today about VBasic,
parallel port control of step motors etc. I just installed Ubuntu on
a Win 7 computer to run as a choice on the initial startup. It comes
up with a window for a name and password entry. I tried to enter a
password of my choice and used my name but I can not get anything to
go forward from that point. Is there an initial name/password
combination that I need to get things going?

Regards,
Craig

Thank you,

This is an excellent point.
You often end of doing business with people who may or may not be
trust worthy. This happens in person as well as over the internet. I
mean, how do I know the anonymous clerk at some store in Portland is
honest and not going to try to misuse my credit card? I don't.
Indeed, I had a problem with some false charges to one of my accounts
a couple years ago. As near as I can tell, some clerk in Florida
copied my credit card when I used it to make a purchase at a store
while on vacation in Florida. My bank (US Bank) caught the problem
right away and it wasn't much of a problem for me; but it would have
been if the bank had missed it.

And the chances and fraud like this happening is much greater with
on-line transactions.

Basically, our current payment systems (personal checks, debit cards,
credit cards) are not very secure and this invites fraud when we have
so many transactions between buyers and sellers who have no personal
relationship with one another. Our systems need to change to fit this
new environment. And as I understand, Europeans have been making some
changes in the way they transact with debit and credit cards.

booth at OSCON. This is a very last minute thing. We were not
scheduled to have a booth due to lack of space, but at the last minute
space opened up. So we have a booth, but are totally unprepared. I
left our booth banner in Corvallis and we did not plan to man a booth.

So, Alan Olson will be helping out.
We could use a few other volunteers.
If anyone has any fliers for PLUG (or Open Source in Oregon or
whatever) that would be wonderful.
And I think Linux Fund would be willing to spend a few dollars for
printing costs; but check with me before getting anything printed if
you want reimbursed.
If anyone has anything to enhance the booth that would be cool as well.
(Maybe the PSU Rocket people could bring an Open Source Rocket!)

As in previous years, we want to advertise PLUG but we are also want
to advertise Open Source in Oregon and we are happy to use our booth
to advertise other Open Source groups in Oregon so long as PLUG's
message doesn't get entirely drown out - which is unlikely.

Re: [PLUG] Calling all editors; final site draft

2010-07-20 Thread David Mandel
Thank you Nathan.
I'm at OSCON and won't have much time to look at the web site this
week, but intend to look at it in detail. However, overall it looks
wonderful. So much better than the old site. (That isn't to say
anything bad about the old site. It was created around 2001 or 2002
and hasn't been actively maintained since that time - so it looks sort
of 2002ish.)

Re: [PLUG] Colocation Servers in PDX

2010-05-28 Thread David Mandel
I use to use seaccp.org in Seattle and liked them a lot; but Seattle
is a long ways from Corvallis when trouble happens.

I'm not aware of any equivalent in the Portland area. One reason for
that is that we have osuosl.org. At Linux Fund, we finally moved
to osuosl. They are great, but their mission is much more restricted
that seacpp's, so many people and groups who can use seacpp can not
qualify to use osuosl. Also, seacpp gives users more freedom than
osuosl generally does.

There are a number of small, friendly, high quality for-profit hosting
services in Portland. The one that comes to my mind is forked.net. I
used them for several years and really like them.

Seacpp has had financial difficulties at times even though it is
located in Seattle. Given that Seattle is larger than Portland and
that Portland is already served by the likes of osuosl and forked.net;
I doubt that a Seacpp could succeed in Portland - BUT I could well be
wrong on this.

Re: [PLUG] Xen Hypervisor

2010-05-10 Thread David Mandel
OpenSuSE has good Xen support built into it at both the kernel level
and the administrative level. (That is, there is Xen support built
into openSuSE's admin tools - yast and yast2).
The current version of OpenSuSE (openSuSE 11.2) still uses Xen as it's
preferred virtualization, but I expect this will change to KVM as most
everyone seems to be changing.

I have used Xen - sometimes successfully and sometimes not so
successfully. Xen works very well once implemented, but it can be a
bit difficult to implement. At times I have had trouble building
virtual machines and getting all the networking straight and what not.
And I have had trouble when I was running on old hardware that
required running in paravirtualized mode.

As a result, I use VMWare server a good deal more the Xen. But, I
have had very good experience with both of these virtualization
packages. And although I have had pain with each of these packages,
they both work well and I am not shy about using either of them on
production machines.

Of course, KVM seems to be the future and I will probably be there someday.

Re: [PLUG] Grub Gripe

2010-05-07 Thread David Mandel
I was a bit slow to move from lilo to grub, but I moved years ago.
grub is a much richer boot loader and at this point much better
supported. However, lilo works and deserves more respect than it
gets. Even in recent years, I have encountered a situation or two
where lilo seemed to be the better boot loader for the situation.
However, that is rare. In most situations, grub is much better than
lilo at this point.

Part 2: Building a Twitter
App

 Instructor: Tony Hillerson
Presented by creativeLIVE in partnership with O'Reilly

*Please join us for this free online course*

The Android platform is poised to take the mobile market by storm. A big
reason is portability: you can use Android to build apps that work across
multiple devices.

This free 6-week online course continues where part 1 of *Developing Android

off. You'll learn hands-on how to build an Android Twitter App - how
to
use OAuth, access the Twitter APIs, and how to post photos to Twitter - as
well as the ins and outs of Android's features.

If you can't make the free course, you can purchase the video online:
http://oreilly.com/catalog/0636920010289

And for you Safari subscribers, this video package will also be available
online at:

Yes. That would fit well with a couple of the topics I was suggesting.
Would you will willing to spend a few minutes (say 5 minutes) talking
discussing
the need for a public cloud? That would be great.

We are out of speakers for the PLUG general meetings.

Next month's PLUG meeting is April 1, 2010.
Does anyone want to speak?
Or, does anyone know of someone I should contact?

We need speakers for months after that as well.

                                PRESENTATION

                                   A Talk
                                     by

                               Jeri Ellsworth
                               (Circuit Girl)

Jeri Ellsworth is a native Oregonian, born in Yamhill and raised
in Dallas, Oregon.  Early on she became fascinated with electronics
and 8-bit computers setting the stage for her unique approach to
learning.  Not being challenged in school, she skipped higher
education to pursue a career in car-racing and chassis fabrication.
After that, she opened a chain of computer stores in Oregon and
Washington.  She sold those to peruse a career in chip design,
which lead her to design the CommodoreOne - based upon the
Commodore 64 - using reconfigurable logic and the C64 DTV 30-
games-in-one joystick, selling, a quarter million units.
She currently works as an Oregon based consultant.

I'm not sure what Jeri is going to speak about yet, but judging
the talk she gave at Sanford, it should be very good indeed.
See a video of her Sanford talk at:
    http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1053309060448851979#

Also, see her webs sites at:
    http://www.jeriellsworth.com/
    and
    http://www.fatmanandcircuitgirl.com/

Note:  Jeri was originally scheduled to give this talk last month,
but it didn't happen due to unexpected illess.  Thus, we have
    reschedule her for March.
