It isn't the only way or even necessarily the generally best way to do it, but it is *a* way and moreover, it is my way and it has some features that I like. I got a sense at one point that any venue with food and a room had a flaw in their business model, having blown through Jax, Club 915, what is now a wine bar near Free Geek... Moving to Free Geek resolved that issue and at worst they had a board meeting that ran a few minutes late and we had to wait. Otherwise it was great to work there. As a community center, they do see value in partnering with PLUG. The Clinic is obviously doing well and Wes, does someone from Free Geek need to be present? If not, I am not aware of any pressing issues short of my finding time to work out all details with them and being available to organize AT. Note that I did bring food and drinks to a few AT meetings. > Alan> How advanced do people want to go with the talks? Graduate level? > Alan> Not beginner? Calagator is a HUGE win here given that people can determine if they want to see a talk on "talking to recruiters" or "Advanced Valgrind" or "FPGA programming". The burden will always be on finding a steady flow of speakers, announcing, optionally streaming... etc. Michael Dexter PLUG Volunteer ___ PLUG mailing list PLUG@lists.pdxlinux.org http://lists.pdxlinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug

Portland Linux/Unix Group General Meeting Announcement Who: VM Brasseur What: The Biz of Community Where: PSU, 1930 SW 4th Ave. Room FAB 86-01 (Lower Level) When: Thursday, January 5th, 2017 at 7pm Why: The pursuit of technology freedom Stream: http://pdxlinux.org/live While community management and developer relations are gaining acceptance, many companies still don't know how these efforts can benefit not only the communities of the open source projects on which their business relies but also their productivity and profitability. In this talk, I'll look at community from a business perspective, including the effect community can have on an organization's bottom line. Although there are communities everywhere, I'll approach the topic—meaning, communities, their members, and their contributors—from a free/open source perspective. In this talk I will also cover: * Business reasons for supporting a community * Metrics for gauging community management success from the business' perspective * Getting started in community management * Risks of community management About VM In VM (aka Vicky)'s nearly 20 years in the tech industry she has been an analyst, programmer, product manager, software engineering manager, director of software engineering, and C-level technical business and open source strategy consultant. Step one is what both parties have proposed: "Join forces" on the PLUG events so they are just formal enough to meet their mission (zero concern) and eliminate any need to pay for access. As for long-term. PLUG and Free Geek have had various forms of partnerships for decades. The rise of their education classes is a huge step forward for this type of "education" we both provide and if we all had more time, we should be teaching courses there. As you may or may not know, there was a risk they would lose their lease during the housing boom. Fortunately, that storm passed and they are on good footing. I have not met the new Executive Director but so far they seem reasonable in the face of this little issue. As for what Tomas is discussing, I would LOVE a facility with the nice lecture space of PSU and the lab area of Free Geek, hosted by either institution. (I know the two different locations suit different peole better) Free access is a big plus because we can set up early (often a problem at PSU) and staying late allows for in-depth conversations (could be a risk at Free Geek now). All things considered, I am very grateful to both PSU and Free Geek for the spaces they provide PLUG and am happy to work around the quirks. The same goes to SpireTech for hosting. As for an action item here and now: If you have the time, please consider getting involved with Free Geek, especially if it is PR or fundraising-related. People come and go there and it always helps to stay in active contact with them. Hello all, I was approached by someone during the AT meeting and was given the policy. Yes, they want to do this but they also greatly appreciate PLUG and what we do. For AT, they may be able to have someone adjust their schedule to stay late on AT nights. For the clinic, we'll have to see if that model will also work. Given that they're concerned about security, I prefer help them pass around a hat to add a wall and restroom to allow for a separate meeting space. Having that space and events serves their mission. I will begin a dialog with them and figure something out. Michael Dexter PLUG Volunteer On 10/21/16 12:35 PM, wes wrote: > They want to charge $20 an hour now. During his recent post at Intel he specialized, amongst other roles, at designing systems for parallel data processing, analysis and visualization for improving chip design, test and manufacturing yield. He spent almost decade running both Solaris and Linux engineering computing data center and workstation network for users in manufacturing yield.
