I wouldn't be quite so self deprecating :)

If I came across as anything other than wanting to be genuinely
helpful, then I apologize. After re-reading my original message,
I can see how it could be interpreted as sounding somewhat curt.
If that was how it came across, then I apologize for wording
myself poorly.

OpenBSD just does things differently is all. I'm sure figuring
out how the various Linux distros package their CDs also had a
small learning curve at first too. Indeed, since I'm not a Linux
user, I find that I myself have had a hard time figuring out which
ISO to download from certain distros.

As another poster pointed out,
http://ftp.openbsd.org/pub/OpenBSD/snapshots/amd64/install60.iso
would indeed be the latest snapshot.

Be careful of the other .iso in the OpenBSD directories, it's
meant to be used more like a bootable floppy (the ~8 MB filesize
should be a giveaway that it couldn't contain the entire system
anyway) and used for net installs.

http://www.openbsd.org/faq/faq4.html Might be a good place to
have bookmarked for everyone at the clinic. It's focused on
getting and installing OpenBSD, so odds are any common issues will
have a solution posted there.

Again, I apologize if my original message came across as being
curt. My intention really was to try and be helpful, since I know
getting over the first hurdle of installing OpenBSD tends to be
people's biggest stumbling block, and I welcome any and all people
who want to give OpenBSD a try! :)

I don't claim to know OpenBSD, but from a quick look at that site, it looks
like this might be what you're looking for?

Obviously I am not nearly smart enough to use BSD, since I can't make
heads or tails of the folders and what is what.

I should add that my motivation is to have the latest snapshot
available at the Clinic this Sunday. The reason I want to download it
ahead of time is that we have poor bandwidth at Free Geek, especially
with a dozen Linux-heads in the room all trying to use it at the same
time.

I anticipated being able to find an ISO of the install files, to be
burned to optical media or USB drive. Apparently that thinking is wrong.

Based on my terribly quick search of information last night, I believe
the amd64 ISO for 5.9 is this link:

Other releases have the same filename, just under a different subdir.
For example, the i386 ISO is here:

The Clinic is at Free Geek, 1731 SE 10th Avenue, 97214, from 1 to 5 pm,
May 15, 2016.

The occasional child may not be not a problem, as long as they can be
kept from running amok through the rest of Free Geek. OK, I may regret

In anticipation of seeing you at the Clinic I decided to download the
latest OpenBSD, which I understand is 5.9. I have great download
bandwidth at home and it costs me nothing, and downloading an ISO for a
distro takes only a few minutes. Once I have the ISO(s) on my computer
I can burn them to optical media or a USB drive for you. From there
others can help sort out the difficulties you are having with the
installation.

However, I am finding it difficult to find the appropriate ISO file.
Apparently OpenBSD does not encourage the use of torrents. And the
FTP pages on their mirrors are inscrutable. At least I cannot scrute
them.

Thank you, I'll try that too. I did have one CD that only had a [

Wild guess here but you should only have the .iso image of the install
CD on the computer you're using to burn the CD. You need to burn the
.iso file to the CD _as an ISO image_, not burn the .iso file itself.
Usually CD burning software gives you the option, and Windows even has
it built-in, or did last time I checked, but right-clicking on the
file in file explorer.

Once you burn the image to the CD the right way there will be,
guessing again, hundreds or thousands of files on the CD itself, not
one big multi-hundred megabyte .iso file.

I hope this is of use to you and good luck!

David,

Indeed, I poured through the Man pages & I have a copy of
Absolute OpenBSD and I followed the instructions as closely
as I could.

I was just pondering if I should install 5.8 & Xenocara (I have
a second post on Xenocara) , see how it works and take it
from there. I did still want to install of the proper dependencies.

Thank You,

Unfortunately, I have no (or at least not recent) experience with
installation of OpenBSD.

Have you consulted the README and INSTALL.amd64 files? (No snarkiness
intended here.)

It appears there are some "gotcha" issues with this release per the
README, and the second file gives you the information to use
install59.iso to create the necessary bootable media.

I don't recall the exact cli command using dd to create the CD, or I'd
pass that on here. If you have other software burning software, you can
use that, or the dd command is easy to locate with your favorite search
engine if needed.

There are also directions to create a bootable USB as well.

Hopefully this gets you going in the right direction.
