Re: [PLUG] Buzzing speakers

2020-03-24 Thread Seth Alford
Theory: you have a cron job running at :29 and :59. It's doing some sort of
activity that generates RFI. The old speakers, or perhaps the wires to the
speakers, act as antennae and pick up the signal. You never noticed it
before because traffic noise was always louder. Now that everyone is
staying home, there's no traffic noise. So now you hear it.

[PLUG] Buzzing speakers

2020-03-24 Thread Michael Barnes
Not really Linux related, but very strange. I have a real nice set of Altec
Lansing computer speakers hooked up to one of my Linux Mint machines. This
is a three piece set with two desktop speakers and a large subwoofer on the
floor. I've had these speakers for at least ten years and they have always
worked and sounded good. I hooked them up to this computer about a month
ago. After a couple weeks, they started making a very loud low frequency
beep/buzz every thirty minutes. It is about a one second burst. I turned
them off with the on/off switch on the volume control, and the beep
persisted. At exactly :29 and :59. I unplugged the audio input from the
computer speaker jack and the beep continued. There is no kind of logic
circuitry in this thing. Just an audio amplifier and related electronics.
The only way to stop it is to unplug it. When plugged in it is like
clockwork at exactly :29 and :59, regardless of whether it is connected to
the computer or not. I hooked up another set of speakers to the computer
and they do not do this. Sad, because these are a great sounding set of
speakers.

Anyone run into something weird like this?

That would be great for me, never was able to attend a meeting while I
lived up in Kalama/Kelso (first Kalama then Kelso) tried to many times,
but was either out on the road of busy in some other way. I would
certainly enjoy it.

Back when I worked for Ozone International, every Monday morning we
had a virtual conference. Every one checked in and someone gave a
presentation on something or other going on. People were able to ask
questions either during the presentation of at the end of it. It did appear
to work quite well. It was the only way to get all of the field people
together
with the folks on Bainbridge Island. I say go for it. We are a lot more tech
than they were.

Haven't used FreeConferenceCall.com.  Zoom is most common in my industry.

For 20 years I earned my living by teaching adult education classes, in
a traditional classroom. One of the things that made me successful was
input from the students. I recall when I first started teaching I might
explain something, then look up and see a classroom full of blank faces,
followed by questions. 'OK, that wasn't the right way to explain that,'
I would think, the teacher having learned a lesson. You may have
mastered a subject, but you have to teach it three or four times before
you can do a decent job of explaining it to someone else.

I can't imagine giving a talk successfully without real time feedback.
If my audience is confused, I need to hear about it on the spot. If you
want a successful virtual meeting your audience needs to have a way to
ask questions.

And I should say that I have never done that . My laptop has a camera,
and once I tested it to verify that it works, but I've never actually
attended a virtual meeting where I used it. Plus, there may be members
who don't have the equipment to participate.

I think it's a good idea, but you can't assume that everyone has the
tools and knows how to make them work. I see a need for some education
before virtual meetings will work well.

[PLUG] Feedback wanted: Virtual PLUG Events

2020-03-24 Thread Michael Dexter

Hello all,

OSCON was permanently cancelled today and there is a very good chance
that the face-to-face PLUG meetings will be cancelled for the coming months.

What are your thoughts on virtual or substitute activities?

On one hand, doing nothing is always easiest and I am a skeptic against
"virtualized" conferences, especially if an organizer were to think they
can charge their traditional rates to stream presenters in their pajamas
in their kitchens.

On the other hand, I have worked from home for 20+ years and think that
everyone needs to expand their remote working/learning/teaching capacity
to the point that schools have regular "learn from home" drills to go
with the active shooter drills, leaving us all semi-prepared for
pandemics and the like.

I have reached out to a school district tech (I can think of another
too!) to give a remote talk about the scramble to deliver remote learning.

BUT: What does this mean to you as the audience? What elements such as
Q&A do you need to have to make a live stream any different from a
random YouTube video?

When it comes down to the essentials, the undivided attention aspect of
a face to face event is the key value. I have not once had to change a
diaper or let the dog out during a PLUG talk. I've wandered as far as
checking Twitter and occasionally go to the restroom but 95%+ of my
attention is there. That has not been the case with recent virtualized

Cups have config for things like default paper size, trays, duplex.

Perhaps it is even service, like in Linux, you could connect to with
browser on the Chromebook and change what you need.

Chuck,

Looks like the issue is with the Chrombook printer driver, not the printer.
Can you find the driver and examine it, or replace it with a known-to-work
system such as CUPS?

Re: [PLUG] OT -- Chromebook will/will not print

2020-03-24 Thread Tomas Kuchta
Could this be caused by a localle or location setup on the Chromebook?

I do not have Chromebook, but can imagine someone deciding that English or
time zone selects all sorts of things, including metric paper size. If this
theory is valid US-english and/or US timezone could make the difference.

This is just a hunch on my side.

Re: [PLUG] certificates, URLs, IP addresses

2020-03-24 Thread Aaron Burt

On 2020-03-22 20:53, Keith Lofstrom wrote:

MY FIRST QUESTION IS: can multiple domains and multiple
SSL certificates share one IP address? I can rent more
IP addresses, but I hope to avoid complication and cost.

Yes! Folks fixed that problem a while ago. Browsers now tell the
webserver which domain it's trying to access, so the webserver can pick
the right certificate. Also, you can add an arbitrary number of
hostnames ("server alternative names") to one SSL certificate, but
there's no point in doing that when you can just have a cert for each
domain.

NEXT QUESTION: what is a good ten page summary of how to
set up and maintain SSL certificates in the simplest way?

Info, scripts to automate the process and FREE SSL CERTS here:
https://letsencrypt.org
The topic is definitely worth more discussion here, but it's a good
starting place.

Ditto for DKIM, and configuring postfix for both.

Ditto, indeed. SSL for client connections to Postfix can be handled
with a LetsEncrypt cert.

DKIM is well described here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DomainKeys_Identified_Mail
In sum, you add Opendkim to Postfix, which adds a crypto signature to
each outgoing mail. At the same time, you add a public DNS entry with a
key that can be used to check that crypto signature.

There's lots of great how-to articles out there for whatever distro
you're running, but it's fun to discuss here.

- - - - - - - - - - background - - - - - - - - - - - -

Over the years, I've accumulated many domains and URLs
on three web servers and multiple companies. I've spent
a few days simplifying and debugging all that.

Only a few days? That's lot of work!

After transferring dirvish to a new maintainer, I've
consolidated everything else onto one offsite virtual
server with one IP address. 14 domain names point at
that IP address, all with the same domain registrar.

Nice easy setup.

About half of the domains send email. For example, the
wiki websites notify page authors that their page has
been modified.

Without SSL certificates, some of the major email services
(like gmail) automatically route my outbound emails to user
spam folders. Not helpful.

I don't really understand SSL certificates, or DKIM, but
those can establish the bona fides of my mail server with
the big services. Both my name registrar and my virtual
server hosting provider offer free certs ... I think.

I got lazy and set up SendGrid as my outgoing email provider. I think
it even handles DKIM for me.

If I need more information, I can websearch the buzzwords
in the summaries, or pester the rest of you. The better
the summaries, the less the pestering.

Cheerful communication is what this list does well.
It's funny, I think the old basic how-to docs are eroding as systems
stuff gets more and more pre-canned and ready-to-eat.

Also folks, check in on your extroverts, they're hurting right now.

Regards,
  Aaron

Re: [PLUG] OT -- Chromebook will/will not print

2020-03-24 Thread Chuck Hast
Folks, I reviewed things that paper size should have been A4 vice A1...
I select a email on her desktop machine and send it to print, it prints
just fine.
I go to her Chromebook and select the same email it is sent to the
printer but it must be telling the printer to print to an A4 page, which
is not on the printer so it replies back, "out of paper"
If I do the control P and look at the advanced settings on the machine
it shows it is set for "Letter".
I tested a file she had on google drive, it printed just fine.
Then I tested "foo.com"
On the desktop it printed out just fine
On Chromebook it tries to send it as an A4 page.
If I check the settings it shows LETTER.
Not sure what to think.
The printer is a Dell 3110CN a big battleship color laser printer.
I am not sure what to think on this one.
