I neglected to mention on the MythTV list that you aren't using MythTV,
so here's more info than you were looking for. But maybe some of this
can be helpful:

Assuming you want Kodi to work with MythTV, current Kodi 17 works with
mythtv 0.28, 29 and 30pre (Master)

Depending on Ubuntu version you may need to use Kodi ppa (use stable)
see https://kodi.wiki/view/HOW-TO:Install_Kodi_for_Linux

Xubuntu 18.04 has Kodi  17.6 Debian package version:
2:17.6+dfsg1-1ubuntu1 Media Center Kodi from Debian

Copyright (C) 2005-2013 Team Kodi from Debian - http://kodi.tv

General Kodi information https://kodi.wiki/view/First_time_user

Keyboard controls https://kodi.wiki/view/Keyboard_controls

Installing mythtv pvr addon https://kodi.wiki/view/MythTV_PVR

Note by default channel numbers in Kodi are different to those in
MythTV backend, to change this in Kodi go to

Settings>PVR & Live TV Settings>

Change Settings to "Advanced" this enables some hidden settings

In General select "Use channel numbers from backend" and restart Kodi

I use mythTV. I use alt-tab to switch to other applications all the time.

Kind of fun to browse web pages in Firefox with TV shows playing behind it.

The problem is that kodi does not use the default window manager
(Xfce), so when it goes full screen there is no title bar, nada, not
even a line around the 'window.'

But I have made progress. After searching some more I discovered that
kodi has a folder ~/.kodi which has all kinds of options, including a
file guisettings.xml that contained a line:

1

So I changed 'true' to 'false', save the file and re-started kodi. It
still came up full screen, but now it responds to Alt-Enter to make it
behave. Still no title bar with corner icons, but it has its own exit
button.

John,

I don't know what window manger you're using, but I have a couple of
applications which initially opened to occupy the full screen. But, they use
the default window manager which has an icon (second from the right here,
next to the 'x' that closes the frame). This icon is an open square which
displays as two stacked squares in full screen mode. Clicking that shrinks
the frame to it's default (non-full screen) size. You can then resize it to
your desired dimensions. It should retain that configuration the next time
you open the application.

If you want screen shots of the two icons I'll send them to you off the
mail list as attachments are rejected at the border.

Try it and let us know the results.

Try Alt+Tab to switch to different running application. You could also try
Alt+F1 for desktop menu or Alt+F2 and start terminal ...

[PLUG] Application hijacks desktop

2018-06-21 Thread John Jason Jordan
I installed kodi, a media player that is designed to turn a computer
into a media center. It has some interesting features so I'd like to
use it now and then. But apparently it never occurred to the developers
to add an option to run it in a window instead of full screen. When it
launches it takes over the screen so I cannot do something else while
watching a video. I spent an hour searching for a solution and came up
empty-handed.

I opened the .desktop file that installing it created (Synaptic on
Xubuntu 16.04), where I found a lot of actions, including
'Actions=fullscreen;standalone;' which I deleted, leaving just a
bare-bones .desktop file, but it still comes up full screen.

Before I uninstall it and go back to living my life, I am wondering if
there is something I can add to the 'Exec=kodi' line in the .desktop
file to force it to behave and cooperate with other applications
running on the computer.
