Re: [PLUG] switch with Fast Boot PoE

2022-03-21 Thread Russell Senior
I have no idea if this helps at all, but there are a variety of
Realtek rtl838x-based switches that run OpenWrt. I have a Netgear
GS108Tv3, which doesn't have PoE, but I *believe* some of them do,
e.g. perhaps the Zyxel GS1900-8HP v2. Presumably, the PoE state is
controlled from gpio's. I imagine it *might* be possible to hack the
bootloader to set the GPIOs to enable PoE before the full boot has
finished.

I guess that you are looking exclusively at switches to do power
management for you, so this maybe just a distraction.

There are also multiport POE injectors like these ones:

I would not bet on perpetual POE to trickle down - it feels like "kind
of" niche to have POE with the switch not switching.

Hi,

Thanks for the PoE switch suggestions. It looks like Extreme Networks
(X435-8P-4S) and Juniper might actually have some non-astronomically
priced switches that would do what we want. Netgear has some switches
(GS110TUP and GS710TUP) with a feature they call Uninterrupted PoE,
which seems to be the same as Cisco's Perpetual PoE. Unfortunately the
user's manual doesn't mention anything about a fast boot feature.
Whatever we end up choosing, we will probably need to get a device in
our hands to really know for certain whether it is going to work for us.
In the next few years I expect that the Perpetual and Fast Boot PoE
features will migrate down to more SOHO products.

Regarding the suggestion of PoE injection, I should have mentioned that
we have a minimum of 8 PoE devices, so using injection would be pretty
ugly from a cabling perspective. Thanks for the idea though.

that you need active on the network as soon as possible, like maybe a radio
or something. How about using whatever favorite switch works for you
otherwise, and putting a PoE injector in the line going to your devices
needing immediate power? They would then actually be powered all the time,
regardless of the switch status. You may need to turn PoE off on the switch
ports you have an external injector on. Sure, it adds a little hardware
complexity, but I think it will provide the functionality you are looking
for.

Hi,

For a project I'm working on we have a need for a switch with PoE+ that will
power the ports quickly, say less than 15 seconds after power up. The switch
that is currently specified is a Cisco cbs250-16P-2g. This switch takes at
least a minute, if not more, to enable power to the ports. With a bit of
searching I discovered that some Cisco switches have a pair of features
called Perpetual PoE and Fast Boot PoE. We don't have a need for Perpetual
PoE, but Fast Boot PoE seems to fit our needs. Some other vendors have a
similar sounding feature. So far I have only seen this offered on higher end
switches(Cisco, Juniper, etc.). Does anyone know of any switches that are
more in the SOHO class that have this type of feature?

I had pretty good luck with Netgear ProSafe PoE; the model I used was
GS724TP. It's managed and definitely SOHO. I have no distinct
memory of time-to-power, but I don't recall long waits.

I cannot find any specs in a quick Google search, but that line might
be worth investigating.

I cannot test it - my POE+ switch is remote to me - so I cannot measure
time to power.

That said when setting it up - I have pretty strong feeling that the
power came instantaneously (1 sec or less) with this cheap switch:
https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-5-Port-Gigabit-Ethernet-Unmanaged/dp/B08

LVlZZJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2
xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ&th=1

They have managed version for about 2x$$ as well as POE++ for about
$60-ish

I cannot say anything negative about it.

PS: Wish I could get UBNT version for similar $$. I do have UBNT POE+,
but they are more expensive, take about half minute to boot (not sure
if the power comes out faster) and are unobtainable these days - so not
really useful to you right now.
