 From personal experience:

We use a few of these at work because it just needs ram/cpu/hdd and it's
cheap. They work just dandy for our network app. Just be VERY careful
that you check the interop list for the CPU and be aware the BIOS will
need to be updated for a lot of the processors, so it's a bit of a
hassle, especially if you don't have a processor that the current BIOS
supports with which to upgrade it.

Alternatively, there are a number of smaller systems on newegg that may
be cheaper and more geared toward your purpose. Or ebay something older
but still working.

Rack mountable firewall recommendation

2011-01-21 Thread Shane Hathaway
Hi,

I am looking for a simple, reliable server that will act as nothing but
a bridging (transparent) firewall. It will run Linux, it must be rack
mountable, it must have 2 ethernet ports, and I think it should have a
redundant power supply. It's easy to find cheap servers, but the
requirement for a redundant power supply narrows the choices and raises
the prices.

This will be for WingCash, a new service I just helped launch. We
already have a good firewall in the form of iptables rules, but for
absolute safety, we should have an external firewall too.

Thanks for any recommendations.

Shane

P.S. Everyone should check out wingcash.com... unlike PayPal, it doesn't
require a bank account, it's transparent for accountability, it has many
branding opportunities, and there are no fees for in-network transfers,
even for businesses. Unfortunately, we can't yet make WingCash
available for individuals in Utah, but we're working on that.
Meanwhile, WingCash is available for all businesses in the USA. Plus,
if you have any troubles, you can yell at me and I'll hear you! ;-)

My $0.01: Any recruiter doing this job for a while will tell you
hiring *is* already back and will continue strong for the next several
years. One personal indicator is the number of "recruiters" trying to
network with me that were doing something else (read: mortgage loan
processor) 6 months ago.

Nearly every economic expansion in the history of the USA has lasted
6-7 years from trough to trough, (see
http://www.nber.org/cycles/cyclesmain.html ) and this current economic
cycle officially hit "bottom" 7 months ago. Of course, the "climb"
out of a recession is always the hardest (i.e. longer than the "drop"
from peak to trough on the inevitable back-end), and with housing at a
low, a lot of otherwise positive indicators are sluggish as well...
for example, hiring.

That being said, you have between 5-6 years of good times ahead, also
noting that Utah has led the nation in terms of economic strength
through this downturn, and will likely reach optimum "full" employment
(~4%) several quarters before the rest of the country. Count that as
a good thing. For some of you, that means this may be the time to hang
on wherever you are and ride the bulls that surely will be coming for
the next few years. For others, this is your chance to get out of
wherever you are and make a move to something that interests you as
YOUR personal value-proposition is currently going up steadily. And,
as the average employment for Software Engineers still seems to settle
in between the 18-36 month range between new opportunities, you may
want to make room for even two new gigs at the top of your resume
before too long.

If anything else, update your LinkedIN profile (even if you don't say
you're "looking", just make some kind of addition/change to your
profile so it will show up higher in search results) and ensure your
contact information is available so that opportunities may find their
way to you a little easier.

Good luck out there.

Hello Everyone,

We have several openings for both Perl and Python developers. Here are
the details:

Perl Developer

The successful candidate will be able to set up, configure, and code to
configure the operating systems. Out of the six developer/systems admin
openings there are about 2 at each level that rank from more middle tier
to senior level. Someone who has both development capabilities and systems
administration would be considered at the top tier where someone with more
straight SA experience and no development may be on the more basic level.
The development portion will consist of Perl and C++ primarily doing
development work on a Linux/Unix Operating System. The whole project
revolves around the basis of these candidates being able to configure and
install new features on the Linux/Unix operating system (their control
panel) along with scripting and managing their Linux OS/Platform. They
have to be able to do these configs/installs which then may require an
understanding of PHP, Apache, etc. ( but not be a PHP Developer). Some
candidates need to be better developers than others but don’t
necessarily need to be experts in this areas as they do have FTE ‘s who
have architected this VPS system, etc.

Python Developer

The selected candidate will work with a team of engineers and quality
assurance members as we help to develop offerings and technology for use
in the marketplace.
Requirements Job Requirements:
• 5+ years of experience in Software development including analysis,
design, implementation, testing and support • 3+ years of industrial
experience in Python creating system applications • 3+ years of
experience in large-scale, distributed UNIX system administration,
particularly with RedHat Linux. • Ability to develop Unix shell and
Python scripts to automate system processes • Knowledge of software
technologies such as CGI/HTML, PHP, XML, SQL & MSSQL, LDAP, Internet
protocols (e.g. SSH, DNS, POP/IMAP/SMTP, etc.), and networking components
• Ability to easily comprehend and apply knowledge gained from technical
documentation • Experience writing unit and functional tests •
Experience in participating in a formal - to light weight development
process (requirements, design, implementation, risk and issues tracking,
bug triages, testing and release) • Experience with at least one source
control system; experience with SVN preferred • MS/BS in Computer
Science or equivalent Job Responsibilities:
• Join a product development organization that is responsible for
working on multiple projects concurrently and relies heavily on teamwork
• Work well in a team environment or individually, with a positive
attitude • Interact well with technical teams, business owners and
project managers • Exceptional problem-solving/analytical skills. •
Follow direction and keep peers and manager informed of progress, changes
and issues • Ability to step up unexpected situations. • Performs
other duties as assigned. Interpersonal:
• Good verbal and written communication skills • Prioritize own
activities so that all tasks are completed in a timely manner •
Candidate should be proactive and possess an energy level that is
consistent with an organization that requires and rewards creativity,
careful attention to detail and productivity • A self-starter with a
strong desire to learn new concepts.

Which is a bit of a commute from Pune, if that's what you're wondering.

I’m looking for a talented sysadmin who would like a few hundred $$ a month in
side work to maintain 2 healthy Linux servers.

The setup:
  - 2 Dell servers
  - Colod at Fibernet’s Orem datacenter
  - Debian, with OpenVZ for virtuals
  - Apache

We use an outside monitoring service that catches problems 24x7 and texts or
emails. Our system is healthy, averaging only 1 or 2 incidents per year that
require anything on-site.

I need someone to be on call when the monitoring system reports a problem, and
to spend a few hours per month to verify the backups, look over logs, and
generally keep things shipshape.

If you’re interested in this side work, or know someone who is, I’d love to
hear from you:
