DSLR Opinions
Anyone have any up-to-the-moment opinions on any digital SLR cameras? Looking to get something that I can do some nice photos and possibly HD video here and there. I don't want to do any lock-in formats like the Sony Memory Stick (tm) or whatnot, but I'm not opposed to non-standard formats like xD cards or something. Thoughts? -Tod Hansmann /* PLUG: http://plug.org, #utah on irc.freenode.net Unsubscribe: http://plug.org/mailman/options/plug Don't fear the penguin. */

My sister has one, she loves it, and it produces excellent photos [1]. She did have a problem once with a weak gear connected to the auto-focus motor inside the lens, but that was remedied by replacing the lens. I don't know of any camera, DSLR or not, that uses those funky, proprietary memory cards anymore. Everyone is using SD or CF (all my brother's Canon DSLRs use CF I believe). The one thing you will have to deal with on DSLRs is semi-proprietary raw file formats, though the most common ones are well understood, so that shouldn't cause you any problems. My brother has several high-end Canon DSLRs which he likes, and on one he's running some open source firmware, or rather firmware add-ons that boot off the CF. The latest Canon my brother bought can do very nice HD video, which was one of the reasons he bought it. Of course he has used Canons for years (35 mm days) and the lenses are all still the same mount. I've heard from others that quite like the Nikon DSLRs Something else to consider are the many cameras that are between POS (read that anyway you want) and the DSLR. Maybe mini-dslr? Can't remember the terminology. Anyway they are DSLR-like, but not as big. They tend to have better optics than the little cameras, and some have adapters for adding lenses. Many of them take very nice pictures. My brother learned while attending BYU that a DSLR and very big lense is a defacto press pass. /* PLUG: http://plug.org, #utah on irc.freenode.net Unsubscribe: http://plug.org/mailman/options/plug Don't fear the penguin. */

Between the two is a lot like arguing Fedora vs Ubuntu. We have a Canon T1i, because we wanted that good-yet-entry-level DSLR that gave us all the right options for a moderate price. The largest factor in picking a Canon over the similar Nikon model was that my brother (who does higher end photo work) also shoots Canon, and has the nice lenses that we can borrow off him, as well as rely on his experience and familiarity with the interface. That's probably what should be your biggest factor, if you have a friend with lenses, because they make all the difference. Go for the Rebel, or I forget the line on Nikon that compares, and then spend some money on some better lenses than come in the kit. Then, join up with a group like the utah photowalkers or strobists. Like plug it's all pro's and hobbyists who enjoy what they are doing, and love teaching and experimenting. -- Jayce^ The Cloud is my Platform ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ /* PLUG: http://plug.org, #utah on irc.freenode.net Unsubscribe: http://plug.org/mailman/options/plug Don't fear the penguin. */

Canon or Nikon. They are the same quality, different providers. I grew up on Canon, but have recently been leaning toward getting a Nikon for a number of reasons. I believe what Michael Torrie was referring to was Prosumer cameras. A step between consumer and amateur. I have a decent prosumer camera (Canon PowerShot SX200IS) that I use for quick point and shoot with enough options to usually make it do what I want. Though it still has some limitations because it is doing so much for me. I am still hunting for my perfect DSLR purchase. Thought I am really considering an older Nikon D90. The most important and most expensive part of amateur/professional photography is the lenses. A good lens can make all the difference. However, when it comes right down to it, the different between a good photo and a bad photo is the photographer. A good photographer can take just about any camera and make beautiful art. A bad photographer can take the most expensive gear and make lousy art. It really all comes down to how much you want to spend and what you want the camera to do. Here is some suggested reading. Some people do not like Ken Rockwell and consider him biased, but I enjoy the information and perspective he provides. http://www.kenrockwell.com/index.htm http://www.digitalreview.ca/ I also agree with joining a local group. Here is one I just found and was checking out their web site. http://www.photowalkingutah.com/ Good luck and happy photographing!
