Fwd: ot- job recomendation

2013-05-19 Thread Michael Havens
You know I once had a girlfriend who told me that she used to work as a
skip tracer. I didn't know what that was but I didn't say anything and that
got filed away in my mind for a later date. Well tonight is that later
date! So I typed it into my search engine (duckduckgo) and found out what
it is. I think it sounds cool! So, my question (for those of you who know)
how do I go about getting training and whom do I seek jobs from? I found
http://www.skiptraceseminar.com/ but want to know if anyone has any
personal experience. (I'm getting excited)

Re: OT: what good web email clients do you recommend?

2013-05-19 Thread coverturtle

I think it depends on what you want in a mail client. I am not
familiar with squirrel mail or email so I can't compare.

I use Thunderbird which is highly configurable and adapts
easily to read gmail (imap) or pop. It will read a large number
of accounts and handle huge volumes of email. The filters
are excellent but not so flexible as the old Eudora 6.2.3 client.
For each message, you can decide to allow or deny network access.

Thunderbird allows configuring the display of the folder lists
separately or uniformly. It's currently maintained for most
common platforms and promises to continue so. My only
complaint is that I can't modify the display order of mail
box folders - they are always alphabetical within the account.

On the other hand, Thunderbird offers a dizzying array of
options. The defaults are comfortable but I'm picky as
I have much email and spend time adding filters, etc.
The cool thing is I have my own mail sorter built in.

For a small volume of email, say a dozen or so a day,
it works. For a large volume of mail, I can control the
flow.

Try the latest version. It's mozilla, open source.

Are there any good (simple/uncluttered) web email clients that allow
personal customization to simplify?

For a long time I have mostly used squirrel mail (now called
Ensignia mail) but recently I've begun to have problems with
formatting and font disparity (some too huge, some too tiny). These
problems did not result from any changes that I made, but apparently
changes that squirrel/ensignia made (for the worse).

I use gmail as an alternative, but it is way to cluttered to suit
me. I prefer clean, uncluttered, and simple.

I have also tried to use mail2web, but it is cluttered with
advertising.

Any suggestions?

linux for my Toshiba laptop?

I am looking for a distro to load on my Toshiba laptop that is running
Vista.

Does anyone know, how I can tell if this will work or not.

Most distros will work on a box that can run Vista. Some Toshiba laptops
use a Toshiba specific method of power control and need to be installed
with ACPI turned off.

That's about all anyone could say since you have provided no details about
your machine or what you want to do with it (dual boot vs wipe Windows and
replace with Linux vs other options).

As far as what distro to choose, that is as much up to your preferences as
anything. We could offer our opinions but they would be based on our
differing opinions rather than your needs and desires.

If you would like to discuss some options, you are welcome to come to
Stammtische (Tuesday 7pm), Ubuntu Hour (Thursday 7pm), or an Installfest
(Saturday 6/1 10-4pm). And there are other events where you could talk
with us.

First, look through http://tuxmobil.org/toshiba.html and see if your machine's
model# is listed. If it is, follow the link and see if the people there had
any problems with installing/using Linux.

If Tuxmobil doesn't have a listing for your machine, then go to
http://forums.gentoo.org/ or http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=332 ,
then search for "Toshiba $MODELNUMBER" and see what you can find out about
that particular laptop there.

Thank you Dazed,
I plan to wipe off windows and make it a Linux only laptop.

I plan to use it for email and to store images.

I will ask the question again and send more information on the laptop.

Try a live cd/dvd first or a usb based live media (unetbootin or fedora
live usb creator). Fedora or Ubuntu are good starting points. If
everything works on live media it will work when you install it.

PLUG Event: Linux Stammtisch - Tuesday (5/21)

2013-05-19 Thread PLUG Announcements
We'll be meeting up at Iguana Macks at 7pm on Tuesday for the Linux
Stammtisch.

A Stammtisch is a gathering of people with a common interest, so there
is no formal presentation. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stammtisch )

Please come and join us for some good conversation over good food and
drinks, which are both optional... Friends and family are all welcome.
Come see where the conversation leads this time, it doesn't just stick
exclusively with Linux. Us Linux geeks are interested in all sorts of
things tech, so the conversation always leads to a good time.

The private room that we have has power and high speed wireless
Internet, so if you have any problems, feel free to bring in your
machine and we'll see what we can do to fix your problem... We even
have facilities there to do a formal presentation, so if you have a
projector and want to show everyone something exciting, we can handle
that as well.

Iguana Macks is located on the South East corner of Knox (half way
between Warner and Ray) and Alma School in Chandler.

Live CD's use very generic settings to be more compatible. But if it works
you generally can get it to work after install.

This is what I'm thinking of posting:

if you can get an old computer to act as your tv server (i'm using one
 from 2001):

download, burn, and install a copy of 'linux mint' (version 12 was the
 last CD edition) (http://www.linuxmint.com/oldreleases.php)

 start new operating system

 **Linux instructions**

 cntrl-T (open terminal)

type in terminal (or copy and paste):

  sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-xbmc/ppa; sudo apt-get update;sudo
 apt-get install xbmc; xbmc

 **Other operating system instructions**

 Google for and install 'xbmc'.

 start xbmc

 **Univesal instructions**

 in xbmc:

1- Navigate to “System” (in the middle bar) and then open “File
 Manager”

2- Right click and select “Add source”.

3- Type “http://fusion.xbmchub.com” into the box that says “”.

4- Enter a name for the Source, “Fusion”

 5- Click “OK”.

6- Right click on nothing. (sides/top/bottom)

 7- System->Settings-> Click “Add-ons”

8- Select “Install from zip file”.

9- Select the source you named in step 4.

10- Install what you want (as an exaple we will use video)

 11- Select “Repositories”.

 12- Install “1channel...” (example)

13- Click “Get Add-ons” and select the repository you just installed.

 10- Select “Video Add-ons”.

12- Click the name of the plugin you wish to enable.

13- Return to the main menu, and go into the category which your addon
was installed to (most likely either VIDEOS, MUSIC or PROGRAMS). In this
case, we installed a Video Addon, so select “Videos->Add-ons” and
 enjoy your new tv!

Most distros will work on a box that can run Vista. Some Toshiba
laptops use a Toshiba specific method of power control and need to be
 installed with ACPI turned off.

That's about all anyone could say since you have provided no details
about your machine or what you want to do with it (dual boot vs wipe
Windows and replace with Linux vs other options).

As far as what distro to choose, that is as much up to your preferences
as anything.

And there are other events where you could
 talk with us.

Stammtische @ Iguana Macks 1371 N. Alma School Rd, Chandler, AZ 85224

Ubuntu Hour @ Extreme Bean SW corner area of McClintock & Southern

Installfest @ UAT (University of Advancing Technology) 2625 W. Baseline
 Road Tempe, AZ 85283 (Between 48th & Fry's)
