Useless and meaningless rant about my hate for Linux Mint...
I hate Unity too... And/or the M$-like bloated KDE. Because my long hated (and mostly reliable) Linux Mint went out of support, I decided to go with what I hate the least: Xubuntu. But I could not burn the DVD, so I installed it on VirtualBox, transferred the system to my real box, fixed up the MBR and booted my shinny new Xubuntu. No sound... Darn... After fiddling with it for a day I decided: screw it, I'll go Debian Xfce. So I got my trusty net-install CD and... It said that it needed 'proprietary firmware' from Realtek, but WAIT! It also said that I could install from the 'proprietary firmware DVD'! Which (of course) I could not burn either... So I installed it on VirtualBox, transferred the system to my real box, fixed up the MBR and booted my shinny new Debian! :-) No sound... And not second monitor... Darn... :( After fiddling with it for a day I decided: screw it, Mint worked before, I may as well give it a F$%#ING try (I *NEED* a box!)... Of course I could not burn the DVD So I installed it on VirtualBox, transferred the system to my real box, fixed up the MBR and booted my shinny new Mint 17 Xfce. And now everything works! But I am hard headed and now I am facing years (I installed LTS) of hating MINT Gr... 3 wasted days later, and with a fully functional system that I hate, I am seriously considering to end it all and hang myself from a pumpkin tree... Re: care about Ransomware
A 'Linux System' is a misnomer, as it is the statement 'Android is partly Linux'. Android has a Linux kernel. 'Linux' is only the kernel. What you call a 'Linux System', is a 'GNU System with a Linux kernel' Macintosh OS is a 'GNU System with a BSD kernel' (not sure which one, there are 3 or 4) With that clarified, I'd be wary of clicking on anything that can be executed without my consent. The 'protection' of a 'Linux System' (as described above) is that it (by default, this can be broken by the user) shields the 'Administrator' by running under 'Unprivileged User' rights. However, that user has access to its files and those are the ones that will be encrypted, so if you run a software against them, you 'll lose them. Stick to your packed manager and run anything unfamiliar on a sandbox (a 'throwaway user') and you'll be (for the most part) safe. YMMV... +1 Brian regarding the more efficient distros Been there done that and spent months hunting for things and tweaking, and finally just gave up and went back to Ubuntu. I recently changed from Unity to KDE. While I didn't really hate Unity, I have come to appreciate the additional options and level of customization that KDE has to offer. I'm running Kubuntu 14.04 and other than having to adjust the sound preset level (which was set too loo), so far no problems. On Sat, Jun 21, 2014 at 12:39 PM, kitepi...@kitepilot.com wrote: HA! Brian last wrote (in very small part ;) Re: KDE ... these days it's quite small. Brian, your comments (and advice and guidance) are always especially helpful and very, very much appreciated. I, too, much prefer KDE and Mint to the many other distros that I have tried. Sometimes, I get very frustrated with changes that they make that often seem to me to create a frustrating nuisance and make things worse than the way things were before the change. I do *despise* everything about nepomuk and akonadi and never seem to have been able to totally eliminate it from my systems. Also, for example, I really wish they would bring back the hide button for the start line. Most annoying to me is when they force new things on us instead of just giving the option to opt-in if we should choose to do so. Yet, all-in-all, I am just so incredibly thankful to not have to live with that most horrific of all annoyances that is M$. Every time I have to try to help my dear bride with her M$ box, I praise God again that I don't have to contend with that. --- PLUG-discuss mailing list - PLUG-discuss@lists.phxlinux.org To subscribe, unsubscribe, or to change your mail settings: http://lists.phxlinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug-discuss
Re: Useless and meaningless rant about my hate for Linux Mint...
What a great rant!! I was on my way to look for a video on HULU I enjoyed this much more. I think Win7 is one of the best OS's ever made. I started with DOS 2.11 and stayed with DOS until 95 when I was forced to use it. In 2000 I used Linux for 8 months and then went back to Windows. In 2006 I used Linux for about 3 months and went back to Windows. Mostly because I need IE for testing. I hated IE in Wine. I've been using Kubuntu as my main system for 5 or 6 months. I think it will stick this time. It has been a pain making the switch. I still need to load Windows in a virtual machine so I can have everything on one machine. No time and no energy to do so at this time. I stay with Kubuntu because I know at some point I am really going to forced to switch over to Linux any way. I have a laptop running Win7. I use it to test with IE and to use Go-To_Meetings which does not work on Linux for some reason. Since my two large screens are connected to my Linux box I am unable to enjoy NetFlix until I get a vmachine set up with Windows. In summary I would say that each have their strong points. I like some of the things about Kubuntu and I like other things about Windows. If I could combine them I would. xbmc is all well and good, but for some folks Netflix can be a show stopper if it won't run on linux.
