My Linux desktop experience is similar.

I started my Linux desktop journey circa 1997, dual booting between Windows
and Linux. Believe it or not, it was more stable than Windows 98 but there
were not many productivity apps.
I experimented with a stock X desktop, calculating the Hsync/Vsync
modelines till you got it right for *your* CRT monitor!

And then came the KDE desktop 0.9x, with its suite of applications. I have
been using the KDE desktop for quite a while.
And then it slowly became bloatware and I switched to Linux Mint (Mate)

The Linux Mint team has done a wonderful job putting together a desktop
distro that simply works with LTS and rolling upgrades.
Linux Mint may be the way to go if you are looking for ease of installation
and maintenance.

About 6 months ago, I tried Kubuntu 22.04 in a VM and was quite surprised
to see that it was nimble like when it first came out.
I have switched to Kubuntu 24.04 a couple of weeks ago.

I used to call it WinDoze :)

As for a Linux distro, I have repurposed an HP T630 thin client (8GB RAM,
32GB SATA SSD) with a Linux Mint desktop. The default install takes about
12 GB, it includes the LibreOffice Suite. You have to watch the disk space
usage but additional storage can be added with external USB drives.

Prima facie, it looks like a corrupted file system v/s bad hardware.
Do you know what kind of filesystem it has?

Also, as rusty has suggested, run *smarctl* on the disk and share its
output.

A friend of mine has bought it and swears by the hardware flexibility (mix
and match).
I am contemplating it for my next laptop, although my 6-year-old Thinkpad
is still going strong :)

Re: Modular laptop concept

2024-06-09 Thread Ryan Petris via PLUG-discuss
I have several Framework (both AMD and Intel) laptops including the Framework
16 and they're great. Yeah there's some small fit an finish issues that some
have pointed out but IMO is an acceptable tradeoff for being repairable and
upgradable.

If anything, the ability to change out the ports is great. Imagine the
situation where you're sitting at a table, plugged in, and someone comes by and
kicks your power cable ripping it out of the computer. In a lot of cases with
other laptops, you're now going to have to replace that port as it's going to
at the very least break the solder joints; and you're not going to be able to
replace just that port as it's soldered to the motherboard. Now you have a
$500+ repair minimum to replace the motherboard in your laptop.

With the Framework, you likely just damaged the $10 expansion card. So you pull
it out, replace it with another one, and move on with your day.

Use a Live System CD (https://www.system-rescue.org/Download/).
Flash the .iso image to a USB pen drive and boot from it. It has all the
system rescue tools.
It boots giving you a bash shell with root privileges; tread carefully and
don't do anything that you don't understand

You will need:
1. lsblk to see all the block devices and the partitions on it -- let's say
your device is /dev/sdb
2. smartctl to dump the SMART parameters of your drive e.g. sudo
smartctl -a /dev/sdb
3. parted to list the partition details e.g. sudo parted -l to list the
partition details of all the block devices (see below -- sample output from
my laptop)
4. Depending on the file system, you must use the appropriate recovery
tool. If it is NTFS then follow the instructions on the screenshot you
have posted.

Good luck.
