Re: Part 2 :Failure to access repositories when installing Ubuntu 23.10 and 22.04 on Proxmox

2024-02-24 Thread Todd Cole via PLUG-discuss
proxmox 8 has all network connections routed thu the proxmox firewall
proxmox upgrades add the firewall to each vm
you can disable that by checking the network setup on each VM and uncheck
the firewall
I have working ubuntu desktops and servers 18.04-24.04 running on proxmox
8.1-4
also uefi and tpm working on some VM's on a old host that does not support
it so it a nice way to learn and test

Re: RAM Upgrade is this the correct RAM?

2023-07-27 Thread Todd Cole via PLUG-discuss
I have run into issues where cpu can handle more ram than the motherboard
can recognize. I have also had success using more than OEM specs
bios upgrade may also increase motherboard ram capacity trial and error
has and does work sometimes if you really need the extra ram.

Re: Server CPU

2023-07-20 Thread Todd Cole via PLUG-discuss
I use a lot of proxmox servers and very happy with them most are for small
office use running a router, win server and samba file server and a win 10
for remote users to vpn into
most of the hardware is used dell 4-6th gen I-7 (cheap 4 cores 8 virtual)
with zfs raid 1 2 SSD's for redundancy and a spinner HDD for back up 32-64
gb ram and meet my needs
with ease. both at home and work.
I have used rack servers but they are hard to fit on a shelf, HOT and use a
lot of power and sound like a jet taking off. (I have a few to donate free)
my point is do not over think or spend money to build a home lab or
hardware that you will need to replace due to your use case.
I still have one on a duel core 8 gb ram 2 250GB spinning disks that I use
as a router and zoneminder camera DVR in a un air conditioned vacant office
it just chugs along in 118 heat
I have a twin to it that is all set up ready to run that I would be willing
donate also. Todd

you could use a switch between cox and then use any combination of rasp
pi's and routers set to static IP's and maintain several firewalls
Intrusion protection geo blocking ect on each but a single device is easier
to maintain
Linux=1000 ways to do the same thing all right and wrong depending on who
you talk to.

Re: Public raspberrypi https/mail/dns... on Cox Cable

2023-07-09 Thread Todd Cole via PLUG-discuss
others here are correct cheap consumer routers rarley have the option to
handle multiple ip's
better routers do. It is built in ipfire ( my choice of routers) on a old
computer with 2-4 network cards or in a vm also works and I think it is
available in
pfsence or opensence and DDWRT just add a alias IP and then port forward to
the server you want it togo to.

Re: Linux and Intel RST

I have a laptop setup similar. it had space for a 2.5 ssd and a nvme so zfs
*RAID-Z1* worked well. They are not the same speed but zfs raid 1 was worth
it to me and still very fast for my uses.
I currently have it *RAID-Z0 on it so that I have more room for my vm's but
no redundancy so i just have to backup vm's often *

when you try to log into proxmoxI.E. https://IPADDRESS:8006
proxmox uses a self signed certificate that most web browsers will show a

depending on what web browser you are using it you may need to go to

Re: Proxmox

2022-11-16 Thread Todd Cole via PLUG-discuss
The virtualbox in the repo is 1 version older than from the website I.E
6-7 I am using vb 7 in 5-6 laptops with guest additions and bridged
network on some and NAT on others as need for each project
while virtualbox is based on qemu it not fully open source if that matters
but it is one of the easiest to use IMHO tho I have many proxmox machines
for work they have many more options with less overhead
in short if you need screen resolution or sound or usb use virtualbox.. If
you need help I will be online at the installfest bbb.azloco.net 10am to
4pm Sat first and third saterdays

most mid level video cards should do fine but not much help for a laptop
for a laptop it will take a bunch of reading I am sure they are out there I
just have look for that 4K use with linux

Re: T-Mobile Home Internet via ethernet connection tip

2022-08-20 Thread Todd Cole via PLUG-discuss
CL fiber was add to my area this spring
70.00 940mbs up and down open ports no bandwith caps
there are also 250 and 500 mbs plans
I have not had to use support so far so no idea but so far it has no down
time
the only issue is my custom routers takes a hour to connect after a reboot
but I assume it is looking for the supplied router that came with the
package

My migration notes to Libera.chat

2021-05-28 Thread Todd Cole via PLUG-discuss
For those that looking for info to join IRC Libera.chat I not a expert but
many hours of testing.

And I did push this out in a hurry so feel free to edit and improve.

Simple web page no install

https://web.libera.chat/

pick and nickname. If that one is used it fill in a generic unused one or
you may try another one

keep the channel as #libera press enter and you will be in the channel. At
this point you will not be able to chat until you register your nickname so
in the bottom line enter

/msg NickServ REGISTER (your password) (your email address)

no parentheses but a space between items

you will get a email with a code to enter

/msg NickServ IDENTIFY (your password)

no parentheses but a space between items

it should ask for your emailed code enter that code and you are now
registered

enter

/join #plugaz

enter and you are now able to chat

these commands should work with most any IRC client

For weechat on a Debian system in a terminal

sudo apt-get install weechat then enter computer password

then enter weechat wait till weechat is fully open then on the bottom line
enter

/server add libera irc.libera.chat:6697 -ssl -autoconnect then
enter/connect libera then enter

/msg NickServ REGISTER (your password) (your email address)

no parentheses but a space between items

you will get a email with a code to enter

/msg NickServ IDENTIFY (your password)

no parentheses but a space between items

it should ask for your emailed code enter that code and you are now
registered

enter

/join #plugaz

enter and you are now able to chat

I used this guide. I also used screen weechat-curses so I could move from
one computer to another

with ssh to the host then screen-dr and now I never miss a comment.

https://www.linode.com/docs/guides/using-weechat-for-irc/

a good cheat sheet is this

https://opensource.com/sites/default/files/opensourcedotcom-irc-cheatsheet.pdf

Libera.chat

https://libera.chat/

I also changed to SASL enter

/set irc.server.liberachat.sasl_mechanism PLAIN/set
irc.server.liberachat.sasl_username /set
irc.server.liberachat.sasl_password /save

https://libera.chat/guides/weechat

Re: Question about memory for a Dell

2021-01-14 Thread Todd Cole via PLUG-discuss
I maintain about 15 Dell Optiplex 7010
They do use several different Motherboards but so far all have used
standard DDR3 unbuffered Memory up to 32GB
Factory ram is usually Hynix 4G 2Rx8 PC3-1200U some have 2 slots others
have 4 slots
Resell Electronics/Westech Recycling 220 S 9th St #400, Phoenix, AZ 85034
Has lots of used Ram in stock
4Gb is about 5$ 8Gb is about 15$ as I recall 8GB are not always in stock
but I buy all of them when they have them

Re: Built for Failure

2020-12-30 Thread Todd Cole via PLUG-discuss
I have been using ZFS almost two years on servers and it is easy to deal
with drive replacements. I have even switched my desktops and laptops to
ubuntu 20.04 ZFS for the snapshots.
Issues are learning ZFS and Raids they are not real hard to learn but then
replacing drives as they fail = Time vs money saved Do you have the Time to
learn and spend swapping?
I have a old synology NAS you or someone else can have that can be updated
to debian and ZFS 5 bay hot swap, great way to start out
