Re: Computer Down Need Help!!

2014-05-05 Thread Eric Oyen
h sounds like a cascade failure. The PSU died and it took both the MB and
the CPU with it. I have seen that happen a lot of times. SOme of the cheaper
end server MB's still suffer from the "capacitor plague" as do a lot of the mid
and low end PSU's.

There are two companies I would buy PSU's from: Antec or Pc Power and Cooling.
They may be more expensive but they are certainly over engineered.

As for MB's, sometimes doing a lot of legwork pays off. My rule of thumb is
this: cheap is as cheap gets.

Re: Computer Down Need Help!!

2014-05-04 Thread AZ Pete

Hi All,

I thought I'd report back with the resolution to this mess. First of all,
thanks to all the helpful suggestions.

My power supply was in fact bad. My power supply was under warranty, but
Seasonic doesn't offer advanced shipping so, I had to buy a replacement from
Fry's during the shipping of my defective one back to Seasonic.

When I installed the new power supply I bought from Fry's, this led me to
discover that my Intel mother board was bad. This particularboard has a post
test card built into it and the hex codesweren't even being displayed. The board
was still under the 3 year warranty (by a couple months). I called Intel and
they advanced shipped me a replacement. After I installed the new mother board,
the onboard diagnostics indicated that the CPU was defective. I again called
Intel since the CPU was also still under warranty. Again, Intel advanced
shipped me a replacement CPU. After I installed the new CPU, the system
bootedback to Windows 7. Whoo whoo!

After getting back to "normal", I also discovered that my DVD burner was
alsoblown out. No big deal since I hardly use it, but I have one on order from Newegg.

I have to admit that Intel was very good at handling my warranty support and
didn't give me the run around in any way. However, I did have to pay $25 to
advance ship each part overnight, otherwise it would have taken several days
for each item.
The Seasonic power supply, while a great product, had very poor customer
service. I wouldn't recommend Seasonic power supplies due to their very poor
customer support (no advanced shippingand email only support which took several
days for them to respond to).

It was a nightmare couple of weeks, but I'm back to where I was.I'm so glad I
had absolutely no data loss(however, I do run my drives in a RAID 1 mirror and
take daily and weekly backups).

I've been in IT a long(!) time and the last time I saw this kind of cascade
hardware failure on a PC was in the 486 days!

Thanks!
Peter

There can be all sorts of things that can make a machine not work.
Recently this beast died. It just went off like it would if the plug
had been pulled. I unplugged it and plugged it back in. The fan
started and it beeped then all went quiet again. I checked the power
supply. It was fine. There wasn't enough dust on anything to cause any
problems from overheating. After 3 or 4 hours of checking everything
else, I found out what the problem was.

The power switch was stuck closed. The case has a reset button which I
wasn't using. So I swapped it for the power switch. There are two
buttons on the front of the case. I just push the other one now. This
proved to me that you should never overlook anything when dealing with a
dead machine.

Try a different video card or if you don't have another on hand pull out
you existing one and see if it post/boots.

I have seen a bad video / PCI cards pull the system down so it wont boot.
You may also try removing everything but the cpu and see if it beeps at you
and then slowly add the basic back in.

Have you inspected the motherboard to see if any of the capacitors are
swollen. 95% of the time when I have a hardware failure, it is a
capacitor. I use http://badcaps.net/ to get replacement capacitors when
I can easily identify a bad cap (they carry quality capacitors and I
have never had a cap from them go bad). I think they have repair

I was thinking of Data Doctors, but don't know if theyare capable to
handle something that is notfrom a major manufacturer.

Is Fry's Electronics any good?

Any help would be most appreciated. And the faster the better. :)

Thanks for your help.

If it is not posting he will need to disconnect the disk drive to test,
wich is part of the suggestion to remove all peripherals first to see if he
can post.

Are you sure it's not the disk drive?

Try booting from a live CD and see if that works.

Be sure to actually test the power supply. I've had servers that 'powered
up' that didn't really.

Re: Computer Down Need Help!!

2014-04-22 Thread Stephen Partington
I have had very poor experience with the technical knowledge at fry's
electronics. Data doctors is good but pricy.

Some things you can try is pull all components except CPU and the rest the
bios. If you get beeps your board is not 100% gone.
The add one stick ram and video. If you still get beeps try another stick
of ram. If you still get beeps but no post try an alternate graphics card
or see about testing it in another machine.

CPU fail rates are ridiculously low but not impossible. After that go round
you can try pulling it along with everything else and give it one more try
empty and see if there is a beep code.

Then final step would be for try an alternate power supply. I have seen
them go bad and not give the right power to the core so it comes up but
never all the way.

Hope this helps.

Computer Down Need Help!!

2014-04-21 Thread AZ Pete

Hi All,

I'mhaving serious hardware issues with my maindev box and it is now completely
down.
It's a fairly high end custom system(RAID, customcooling,etc) that I built
myself and hasbeen quite stable for several years.
The box powers up and the LEDs on the motherboard light. But it never reaches
POST.
The M/B has an LED thatdisplays the boot hex codes on the board as it goes thru
POST. Nothing isbeing displayed.
I've tried pulling out the video card and disconnecting all the peripherals, but
that didn't help.

I'm thinking that the motherboard maybe theproblem.
I'd like to take it in for service to have it properly diagnosed. Does anyone
know of any good hardware repair places in town?
I was thinking of Data Doctors, but don't know if theyare capable to handle
something that is notfrom a major manufacturer.
Is Fry's Electronics any good?

Any help would be most appreciated. And the faster the better. :)

Thanks for your help.
Peter
