Turning off uefi will turn off secure boot also. But secure boot is your
actual problem.

Re: Cheap Dell Laptops

2014-07-18 Thread Kevin Fries
You are correct. Most vendors that I have seen allow you to turn off the
"lockdown".

Essentially, the question is if you can install an OS without the special
certification key. If that "feature" is enabled in the bios, you can never
install an thing but Windows on that machine... the bios won't let you.
But if you can turn that off, you can install what ever you want.

Even my beloved Arch handles UFI cleanly now a days.

Re: Cheap Dell Laptops

2014-07-18 Thread Jim March
You should be able to get Linux running on that thing. You may be forced
to stick with a major distro that knows how to deal with the new BIOS-ish
situation, as opposed to something extremely "hipster"...but you're not
stuck with Win8.x.

Re: Cheap Dell Laptops

2014-07-18 Thread Kevin Fries
Yea but it runs Windows 8, the worst OS since ME.

The Chrome book will save you in usability feature, plus not having to buy
an office siite, and an antivirus, etc.

I'd go with the chromebook.

But that's me.

Thanks for your feedback!! The price point is very good!! If the
performance is there then it would be a steal.

The price is pretty good. I'd like to see some manufacturers offer
screens that are taller than 768 pixels without an insane price premium.
And for someone other than IBM/Lenovo to offer machines with
trackpoints. I'm sure these things won't happen.

(No wired Ethernet, no trackpoint, and no DVD-R* drive would mean I
wouldn't ever buy a machine like this, though.)

If we check the CPU specs:

http://ark.intel.com/products/81071/Intel-Celeron-Processor-N2830-1M-Cache-up-to-2_41-GHz

...we see that surpprisingly, it HAS the Intel "VTx" hardware

extension. That means getting a virtual machine running on it for at least
basic stuff will work at reasonable speeds.

If we got to the CPUBench site we see it has a "performance score" of just
under 1,000 which...is...bad-ish but not terrible like some of the Atom
crap.
