Parsons was a Vietnam Vet. He became an accountant and failed several
times in selling his software. I read someplace that Parsons was able
to not pay taxes on GoDaddy for many years because he understood how
thing worked.

It is also my understanding he sold a managing share in Godaddy and
retained several billion in ownership.

I hear he has heavily invested in Phoenix real estate.

My personal experience is that Parsons built a very harsh business. I
worked there for a year and it was a toxic work environment. Everyone I
knew got fired. I made an exit after only a year. Turnover what
amazing.

I learned a lot and it helped me start a freelance PHP business. I
fielded maybe 5000 inbound teach and sales calls (level 1) in that year.
Learning how to talk with people about hosting and website issues while
selling to them, turned out to be a valuable skill for me.

Having worked at GoDaddy whilst it was still owned and operated solely by
Bob, he actually had tax accounting software he had written and was using
in the mid-80s, early 90s. He sold this software (company et. al.) to
Intuit. His software, along with many others in that field would eventually
create the base of what would later become TurboTax.

Although QuickBooks was probably inspired by many features found in
TurboTax, there is no clear line between the two, or any direct connections
to Bob Parsons.

I wouldn't trust any important data on exFAT; sure use it to transfer files
between Linux, Mac, and Windows, machines, but don't let that be your only copy
and don't remove it from the source machine until you've successfully
transferred it onto the destination machine. exFAT is merely an extension of
FAT to allow larger drive and file sizes.

The ones that say “Windows” are going to be NTFS and the Mac ones are going to

I’ve got Macs and I have to be careful when i get external drives b/c if I

Interesting

2019-06-15 Thread Donald Cha.

How To Test Drive 200+ Linux Distributions Without Ever Downloading Or
Installing Them

I’ve written about two fantastic tools that help people discover the ideal
Linux distribution tailored to their needs and expectations, but a new tool
just materialized on my radar and frankly, it’s blowing my mind. I just took
Debian 9.9.0 Cinnamon, MX Linux 18.3 and Peppermint OS for a quick test drive.
But I did so without downloading any ISOs, without flashing any images to a
USB, and without even firing up VirtualBox. That’s thanks to DistroTest.net, a
website that streams the experience right to your browser.

DistroTest is the brainchild of Forster Tobias and Klemann Andy. It operates on
the philosophy of every potential Linux user asking the “3 W’s” questions:

   - Which distribution is the best for me
   - Which graphical interface I want
   - Which configuration options I have

DistroTest serves up a whopping 689 versions across 223 unique operating
systems. This feels like a gargantuan undertaking for the site’s operators, but
the end-user experience is seamless and dead simple.

RELATED READING: 2 Awesome Tools To Find Your Perfect Linux OS

Basically you browse or search for the Linux distro you want to test (you can
also filter the site by the very newest releases) and then click Start. The
equivalent of booting up the Live ISO or installer image is streamed to your
browser in a separate window via NoVNC, but you can also connect to the system
on a locally installed VNC client — the server’s IP address and port are
provided after you start your session.

I found I only needed to wait a few seconds for each distribution to load, and
occasionally you may enter a queue to manage the server side’s bandwidth load.
Then you’ll have a full two hours to treat the distro as your own. Add or
remove software, tweak configuration files, partition and format hard drives,
whatever you desire. Once you shut it down, the system is wiped clean.

You’ll get a faster and smoother experience running these on your own hardware
— or even from locally installed Virtual Machine software — but first
impressions are everything, and DistroTest is a brilliant way to acquire that
first impression!

UPDATE: It appears we may have crashed their servers, as the site is now
throwing 503 errors shortly after this was published. I’ll update you here when
the service is restored!

Some very interesting reading Android, Chrome, and Linux

2019-03-11 Thread Stephen Partington
I have stumbled across a very interesting environment configuration.

Old ultrabook (ThinkPad X1 Carbon) converted to Chromebook via cloudready
(neverware)

Enabled Linux side to use desktop apps (feels like Debian but I haven't
looked properly yet).

Now to enable Android Apps. it all is 100% viable. Just finding the path to
do so.

In all the environment so far runs very nicely, and is very quick (old i7
is still an i7)

I am also seeing that this is using Wayland.

Anyhow Some of my research discovered this article. Really neat read.

Re: Interesting job . . .

2015-12-20 Thread Michael Butash
I didn't think amex hired anyone actually from the US anymore. You'd
never know stepping on campus it wasn't Bangalore itself.

fw: interesting data-science job @ ASU CSDC

2015-12-10 Thread Tom Roche

Reply to Adam Farni . Note that

* CSDC is part of "CoMSES Net":
https://shesc.asu.edu/research/projects/research-network-computational-modeling-social-and-ecological-sciences-comses-net

* the job ad (scraped below) says close date=20 Nov 2015, but a post that went
out today says it's been extended to 20 Dec "and applications will continue to
be accepted on a rolling basis until we have enough qualified candidates."

* the job ad doesn't *say* anything about Linux, but given that it's web work
wanting Python and R (and no proprietary anything I can see), I'd bet money
that you would (be using Linux), esp since that's by far the dominant
scientific-computing platform these days (most other *x having died off in this
space).

Re: interesting

2015-03-04 Thread Michael Butash

I had a few of those for my htpc (at
the time, a hacked xbox with xbmc), they never worked right,
usually giving me 40-60% packetloss with any real use, or not -
video playback was unsustainable even with crap divx's at the
time.  The rooms interconneting were pretty long runs, but still,
rather anticlimactic for the tech circa 2007-2008.

Maybe worth a try with more modern tech in a small-ish home, but I
  wouldn't expect much.
