Yeah, as near as I can tell, the "x3500" through "x4550" are all
basically the same engine and take the same ink cartridges. So I
think this guy is reading a cartridge - I found reference to a
"35-4500" cartridge apparently covering that whole sweep.

God knows what he actually has.

Some or all of these have WiFi printing abilities. I'd recommend just
using them as USB if you're going to get them to work at all.

Most references say they're doorstops as far as any distro goes.
Lexmark is just about the worst (barely worse than Canon) as far as
penguin support goes.

I did find a reference to one series needing USB file system support turned on:

http://onlyubuntu.blogspot.com/2008/06/howto-setup-lexmark-z611-printer-in.html
- turning on the USB file system as described in step 2 won't hurt,
and will help if you get into virtualized guest operating systems that
need USB access (VirtualBox, etc.). And it might be the final touch
needed to get your turkey to work.

I also found a tutorial covering the "z4200" Lexmark under Ubuntu. If
you're lucky it'll be close enough, at least for straight printing
(the x3500-x4550 series are multi-function):

http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-setup-lexmark-4200-series-printer-to-work-with-ubuntu.html

Man, if it's at ALL possible haul the computer and printer to
someplace with an Ethernet cord!!! I solve problems like this with my
cellular modem, and can provide basically DSL-grade speed dang near
anywhere.

Making that printer work will involve trial and error, downloading
different drivers, it'll be a mess. Doing so with no Internet
connection? Pure pain, man, don't even think about it...

I've had to use MS download manager once, and it was almost as bad as
Adobe Updater. At least it went away when I told it to, which is the
best feature of the otherwise completely shitty piece of software.

Subject: Setting up Printer in Ubuntu

2008-11-20 Thread GK
You set up a printer the same in any distro I've used that has CUPS.

Open a browser and type localhost:631 in the URL bar. Then just walk through
the buttons provided.

Lexmarks do have a history of not being Linux friendly though.

Re: Setting up Printer in Ubuntu

2008-11-20 Thread Stephen
there are 2 options, apt-get or aptitude they both have the same
purpose, aptitude has a few more features.

the part i like about Ubuntu, is you can use Debian refrence material
most of the time AND the Ubuntu documentation which is really good.
Part of what i like about it for new Linux users.

both of those tools are heavily documented.

What all is involved in the fix? One of my co-workers apparently got his

replace the winlogin.exe with a known good copy. What a pain.
Personally I cannot believe that any mail filters still allow .exe file

I gave him a copy of a bootcd that I found somewhere some time ago,
"UBCD4WIN". It boots a live-cd of WindowsXP from a CD, and also contains
various anti-virus and anti-spyware tools and utilities. So you boot
from the CD and since its a liveCD you can safely connect to the network
and update the AV signatures before doing a scan and clean. Pretty handy
for fixing winblows issues.

now here is something interesting. I am part of a company that is
building a new facility (rather Large one) and we will be needing a
new phone system. We have currently a Cisco Call Manager based set of
phones but i dont think it will suffice for the new facility.

however i would like to know if it is possible to keep/reuse the
phones as they are ours, and if either of you have a suggestion ofr
anything of that kind of scale. 80 or more phones in a 100sq foot
facility.

Yes, Cisco phones can be used with Asterisk based systems.
We'd just need to configure them to use the SIP protocol instead of Cisco's
Skinny protocol.
I just ordered a bunch of Cisco phones so that I could play with configuring
them.
Otherwise they provision in a similar matter via DHCP/tftp.
100sq feet? that's 10X10! Did you mean 100X100 feet?

Jigsaw

2008-11-20 Thread Shawn Badger
I need help with configuring jigsaw 2.2.4 ( I think) answer only to request
that originate from a specific IP range. I have already been able to make
ask for authorization from a defined range of addresses, but now I need to
make it ignore incoming request unless it comes form a certain IP range.

I know I can do this with IPtables , but I need to be able to do it within
JigSaw.

Thanks

encryption again

2008-11-20 Thread jdawg
with all the other stuff that's on my plate at work, I don't have the
time to study encryption techniques or implement them.

so I need help from the group.

on my laptop, I am told I have to encrypt my /home directory.
this is for redhat, not another flavor.

1) has anyone done this in the group?
2) if so, what did you use?
3) what packages did you have to install/build?
4) if you did implement it successfully, what were the steps you used?

using Open Office as a standard on new computers that is if they're buying

No wai! That would be too much like those French sissies, and *nobody*
wants to be like them! ;)

(If you don't know what I'm talking about, find "France" on this chart:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Market_Share_Analysis)

The real problem is that nobody wants to trust something that you get
for free. There's a certain irrational sense of security to be had by
paying for something rather than downloading it from the internet.
People will always trust their instincts, no matter how arbitrary they
may be, before an actual, educated opinion. Go figure.

Is anybody having display issues with the latest Kubuntu ?

2008-11-20 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
At first I thought: "well... Those #$&% Nvidia drivers..."
But then I saw it happening with ATI boards.
Anecdotally I can say that I have seen it happening in just about each and
everyone of the 15-something computers (desktops and laptops) that I have
installed Kubuntu onto.

And it SUCKS...:(

Mostly with Firefox, but also with Konsole and other applications, suddenly
the display inside a particular window quits (it goes black)...
After resizing it a random amount of times (but mostly after shrinking it)
the display comes back alive and well.

Keyboard and mouse input are taken (at least some times) cuz you can see
some reactions after the display comes back, but it is ungodly ANNOYING!!!

Is anybody experiencing something like that, or is it the little gnome
following me again with the camera and laughing at my expenses?

I mean, it would be funny...
If it wasn't happening to me... :(

Where I work - Universal Laser Systems - I was pleasantly surprised to
see that they put OpenOffice on my new notebook rather than MS Office. A
sensible move, but definitely a surprise in an MS-dominated world.

I am using 8.10 in a few places. One was upgraded from 8.04, one is a
clean install, and one is a wubi install in the xp of what was a dual
boot xp and vista box. Two of those three are using nvidia cards (not
new ones). I have seen some odd issues but not what you describe.
And most of the odd issues I attribute to using it with an ANCIENT
projector. The others seem to be oddness that happened during
install/upgrade and went away once video drivers were stable.

On the other hand, I noticed a fair numbers of video issues on the
ubuntu forums.
