Have you looked at the SiliconDust HDHomerun Prime?

It is supposed to work with a CableCard, and their prior versions (pre
Cable Card) work pretty seamless with MythTV.

If console access, SSH.
For GUI:
It used to be FreeNX, but the project seems to have not been updated in a
long time. So far, it looks like the replacment is neatx which is
similar...using same protocols/compression (I believe).
The NX protocol is nice/fast, and secure (uses SSH)...
https://code.google.com/p/neatx/

Kind of related to the topic is a 'remote session manager' ...Currently use
PAC (Perl Auto Connector) Manager. It lets you save your
preferences/settings for various sessions (ssh,rdp,etc).
It's like vRD on Windows.

Re: Is there something such as celluar wireless to connect with an ISP ?

2010-12-03 Thread Benjamin Francom
One solution you are describing would be "Mobile Broadband."
Most of the major carriers will offer it. We used it several years ago
through Sprint. It was approx. $60/month, and worked well for a remote
office we had. They have routers that support the cards as well.
http://shop.sprint.com/en/solutions/mobile_broadband/mobile_broadband_router.shtml

Some folk'll tether their phone for this type of service, and I've heard
Android's can create Wireless AP's on the fly. As with anything there is
always the security aspects of these solutions to consider.

Re: compiling on a PPC

2010-11-23 Thread Benjamin Francom
I got rid of my G4 several years ago.  It was running Debian at the time.
First thing that comes to mind to find out if Altivec is on there is:
cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep altivec

>From IBM's site on a Power 7 processor and RHEL:
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/wikis/display/LinuxP/RHEL+5.5+Checklist+for+POWER7

#cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep cpu -m 1
cpu : POWER6 (architected), altivec supported

Not sure about the back-end compiler. A quick search brought up distcc.

Do small city colleges suffer the same fate? I have a brother that
works for a small state college in UT, teaching CS and IT courses, and
he loves it. Pay/retirement/time off is excellent, and has politics

Is it worse in larger cities? Is this case the exception? Or are CS/IT
folk less inclined to play politics?

I can assist with West Side Meeting coordination, postings, and follow up.
I also have a CPA colleague I could ask 501-C questions to if needed.

Sunday's are a bad day for me to attend IRC, so I've missed tonights, and
the recent ABLEconf discussions. Are either logged somewhere? If not, I'll
try and keep IRC client open, and review the history later.

Re: November Linux Security Lab Hacks DOCSIS 2.0/3.0

2010-10-29 Thread Benjamin Francom
Related article:

http://boston.fbi.gov/dojpressrel/pressrel09/bs110209.htm

>From the article:
The guy started a company that sold & promoted tools to hack modems,
and was was "charged in a six-count Indictment with conspiracy,
computer intrusion, and wire fraud.
According to the Indictment, from 2003 through 2009, TCNISO, under
HARRIS’s direction, developed and distributed hardware and software
tools that allowed its customers to modify their cable modems so that
they could disguise themselves as legitimate, paying subscribers in
order to access internet service providers’ networks without
authorization and get premium high-speed access without paying for it.
The Indictment also charges that TCNISO and HARRIS offered ongoing
customer support, primarily through forums that it hosted on the
TCNISO website, to assist customers in their cable modem hacking
activities."

If a tool gives you the ability to commit a crime, does distributing
said tools make you an alleged criminal? Shouldn't the customers be
the ones the feds should go after since they are *applying* the hacks
and connecting to the ISP (regardless of how the tools are marketed)?

JTAG adapters and Linux aren't specific to cable modems, but can be
leveraged to gain unauthorized access to greater bandwidth. If this
guy sold similar tools as security tools as way to learn about DOCSIS,
would he still have been indicted?Shouldn't the ISP be able to
control/throttle from their CO/side?

Similarly, if I found a way to reprogram a smartphone to achieve
greater (GSM) bandwidth, would that be criminal? Even if I just
distributed the tools for research? Say something like disabling the
bluetooth radio and increasing power to the GSM radio. (Just an idea,
I doubt that would do anything...Or if its even if its possible. I'm
no a radio or legal expert)

At what point is it criminal? If you get > .01% increase in speed? It
must be in the EULA somewhere I'm sure.

Are these some of the legal issues that will be covered during the meeting?

(I do not condone stealing bandwidth, far from it actually. I am just
interested in the subject.)

Fascinating stuff!!!

Re: Books to learn Linux/Unix

When I first started w/ Linux and FreeBSD, I loved the book "Using
Unix Third Edition, Special Edition" ISBN # 0-7897-1747-6 by Peter
Kuo. There is still a lot of relevant basics in there, along with a
lot of outdated stuff.

I also just finished coursework for the Novell CLP. Their e-books for
the courses are top of the line, highly relevant, especially for SUSE.
On the down side, it is a high $ amount for their self study kits.

(Ask for Jessica, Jamie, or Wendy).

Wednesday West Side Mtg Question

2010-07-26 Thread Benjamin Francom
I will be doing a presentation on installing Linux on a Soekris net5501 this

What room at DeVry is the meeting in? As the presenter, I'd really like to

I posted my question on the IRC, but it's pretty quiet right now, so I
thought I'd also post to the list.

I can vouch for the Goldtouch. I've had one at work for several years, and
just picked up one for home off e-bay. I use a keyboard/mouse tray that is
just above my lap. I've combined the Goldtouch with an Evoluent vertical
mouse, and haven't had the aching wrist since I switched. Works fine with
Ubuntu and SLED.

Cons to the Goldtouch keyboard:
The keyboard layout is non-traditional, with no keypad, so I have a separate
USB keypad. When I first got the Goldtouch, I would hit the num-lock key a
lot since it is right next to L-Shift. The num-lock activates the numbers
within the keyboard (jkl) and you start typing all sorts of crazy.

Cons to Evoluent vertical mouse:
Doesn't seem big enough (I have pretty large paws), so its a little awkward
to right-click.

I've gotten used to both of them, and they work well for me (YMMV).

Flash BIOS From Linux?

2010-04-05 Thread Benjamin Francom
I came across this website that lets you flash your BIOS from an ssh
session, and was wondering if anyone has used it?

http://flashrom.org/

They claim the following:

   - No physical access needed, root access is sufficient.
   - No bootable floppy disk, bootable CD-ROM or other media needed.
   - No keyboard or monitor needed. Simply reflash remotely via SSH.

Of course it only supports certain chipsets, but looks pretty interesting.

Initially, I switched just to learn it as well. The biggest benefit is that
you can control the other services you want installed, along with custom
compile options. You also have the ability to create custom kernels
(ALTQis only available by compiling support for it into the FreeBSD
kernel). In
an enterprise environment, you may want redundancy with pfsync/CARP (think
Cisco's HSRP).

I've used IPcop, smoothwall, m0n0wall, PF, and Cisco. I tried pfsense, a
long time ago in its early stages, and it didn't quite work as I wanted. I
prefer pf on FreeBSD with Squid/SquidGuard. PF was ported from OpenBSD to
FreeBSD in 2003. Some links for reading:

Nokia device based upon the TI OMAP3 microprocessor with ARM Cortex-A8

The device will be available in selected markets starting October 2009

I had some update issues as well. 404 Not found during apt-get
