Re: gcc

2012-08-25 Thread Patricia Wilson
Compiling gcc from scratch, as I am sure you found out, is actually a
bootstrap process. It starts by compiling a tiny compiler which it then
uses to compile the main compiler. Or at least that is how it used to work.
We used to have to do it for our Suns in the early 90's because all that
came with them was a very minimal UCB compiler. Also, I think that nowadays
if you just do the build with no switches you automatically get a whole
bunch of compilers. GCC stands for GNU Compiler Collection.

I was quite fortunate to have an extraordinarily good computer services
department where I worked right out of college. They had emacs on the Suns
and the Vaxen. I decided learning one editor beat learning two so emacs it
was. Nope, wasn't as "good" as the VAX editor on the VAX but was a lot
better than the VAX editor on a Sun.

Ditto. Ubuntu certainly is easy to install but once installed the default

Note that your home directory name appears in the /etc/passwd file so the
system knows where you "live" when you login. If you change the name of
that directory you need to change your entry in the passwd file to match.
