I would exercise caution with respect to charges. E.g. under Verizon's plans, doing so can put you into their capped, expensive data plan instead of the unlimited smart phone data plan. Re: Android phone and linux computer
While they don't have it working yet, the samsung vibrant/att captivate are really nice gsm phones. If you really like CDMA, then the Sprint Epic 4G might be up your alley. I had a Motorola Cliq for about a week and will never buy another Motorola phone again. I've also heard a few build quality issues with the droid X. I'd wait for the droid 2 coming this month or next. I currently have the Vibrant and it's hands down the best phone I've ever used. When I want to copy files to or from my Fedora box, I just plug it in and the phone prompts me, asking how to connect. When I choose USB drive mode, my Fedora box mounts the drive and I can copy over music, ringtones, etc. with drag and drop operations. Copying pictures off is also drag and drop. It's a thing of beauty - trivially easy to do. --- PLUG-discuss mailing list - PLUG-discuss@lists.plug.phoenix.az.us To subscribe, unsubscribe, or to change your mail settings: http://lists.PLUG.phoenix.az.us/mailman/listinfo/plug-discuss
Re: Android phone and linux computer
I've had the same experience as the others, my android phone have been plug and play. Additionally I downloaded an ssh server for my phone called quicksshd. I'm sure there are others, but this one cost $99 cents and was well worth the price. I can now drag and drop files off of my phone via wifi, so I don't have to bother plugging the phone into my computer. It also includes a widget that I leave on one of my desktops that turns the whole thing on and off with a single press of a button. Re: Android phone and linux computer
there are 2 data plans (not counting corporate email/data) teh unlimited web and phone access. and then their broadband option this is extra, however it is supposed to give you broadband speeds as a moblie wifi hotspot. do not use an app go in to a Verizon store or call in to Verizon to set it up if you want the full speed. Re: Android phone and linux computer
My Android phone connects to a computer by USB cable. When connected, an alert pops on the phone screen to mount (it literally uses that word) the phone as a storage device on the computer. This mounts the phone's micro-SD card as a USB drive for the computer to read and write. Easy. Re: Android phone and linux computer
I have the My Touch from T-Mobile. There are tethering apps that don't require root access to your phone. They use the USB cable connection. One called EasyTether has Linux support. Works great with Jolicloud and Kubuntu. Re: Android phone and linux computer
Considering that Android *is* a Linux system, it should be as simple as plugging it in. Some people confuse connecting a phone to transfer files (simple, should just work for ALL Android phones) with tethering, which is using the phone to provide Internet access to the computer (sort of like a 3G modem). Tethering is not supported on all phones because the carriers don't like it (it reduces their revenue from selling you a second data plan just for computer access). Transferring files between the phone and the computer is enabled on every Android phone I know of (and generally on iPhones, WebOS, WinMo, etc... as well). mike Enriquez wrote: I would like to purchase an Android Phone but I am not clear if I can connect it up to my Ubuntu computer.
