HDTV as a monitor -- high def?

2009-03-02 Thread Ryan Rix
Hi,

My parents have just purchased a FREAKING HUGE 55" Visio HDTV, so epic win.

Anyways, best feature: It has an RGB monitor input, which lets me hook up a
computer to it. Can you say Media Center PC? :>

I'm going to be running Kunewbtu on it when I manage to download the iso for
it and overrun my bloated Fedora install. It'll be running NVIDIA
proprietary gfx drivers, I'm afraid :(

Question: How much work, if any does it take to run in full resolution
1920x1080, if this is possible. I'm not expecting progressive scan or
anything fancy, just native HD.
Is this possible/how much work is it to make possible on Kunewbtu? I already
see myself upgrading the RAM and harddrive on this box mighty fast ;)

Not knowing the model of the card makes it more difficult. Hook it up
and see what it can do. :) I've found detection of monitor capabilities
with newer versions of Xorg to be pretty good at telling me things I
didn't know about my hardware. Also, 1920x1080 would (usually) be
progressive, you'd probably prefer to go for 720p if it were between
that and 1080i (if you do plan to use it for typical desktop use).

If you plan on going for a media pc, I'd check some reviews online to
see what the best media center project (or distro focused on that end
use) current is.

Cheers,
Josh

All I needed was a video card that has a DVI output that will scale to that
resolution and a DVI to HDMI adapter (you can buy them on ebay or locally at
Frys).

I have a Samsung 56 inch TV/Monitor with all kinds of connections like VGA,
DVI, HDMI.

If by RGB you mean VGA, then it shouldn't be any problems connecting that bad
boy to the PC. I'm running Fedora 10 with mine and it just comes up in the MAX
rez of 1920x1080p.

Just make sure you read the TV monitor's manual to see IF it can connected to a
PC and what rez. Not all big-screen tvs can do so.

Yeah, that's the model. VIZIO VF550XVT1A

I meant VGA :] Looks like it can connect a-ok and the manual lists it
as one of the connection options. so.. tomorrow I burn this kunewbtu
iso (8.04 for the parents so they can be comfortable on a 'normal' kde
3... :( ) and roll with it

Thanks folks, I'll let you know how it goes.
