re: 'social computing' . Its amazing how quickly any kind of useful
medium on the net becomes advertising real estate. Anyone remember
what the net was like 10 years ago? lots of happy helpful people who
would love to explain their research, interests, hobbies and pet
pictures to you. Now its non stop in your face buy my product or
youll die and never reproduce. I was once enthusiastic about the net
but lets just say I'm losing my religion. Despite the explosion of
information, I find myself reading the classics. And given recent
legislative trends, I expect the net of the near future to be no more
rewarding an experience than watching cable TV. -jmz

The meme is playing out in parts of social computing space over the
last couple days and I figured the RMS reference might resonate here
:-).  Alot more context on the thread can be found here:

perhaps this stands as a reason open source doesn't work, because RMS
should be charging the socially well adjusted and kinda attractive
person big bucks to use the software they don't have time to make
(because they have a 'social life' aka does things that are fun).
then the socially well adjusted and kinda attractive person will marry
him and clean him out in a divorce. :)

The block directly above reminded me of part of the storyline in the
Revolution OS documentary -- I believe it was intended as a
documentary though it seemed to downplay, if not ridicule, an
important cornerstone of the movement.  In other words, I think (IMHO)
that RMS got screwed in the version of the history behind FSF and OSS
similar to what's played out in jmz's block above...  Decent film
overall for the behind the scenes stories from the people involved but
I didn't appreciate the digs on RMS and his philosophy and practice.

I don't know who this Zadi is, and can't figure out what she actually
does beyond self-promotion but she is clearly adorable and tech savvy
and undermines any stereotype of geeks.

I never really did run into the PC vs Mac thing but I couldn't really
care less about the Hobson's choice.

Thanks

Craig
