Re: OT: I've Been Burgled!
Okay, cool. Dad got a new laptop, I installed that Adeona thing and created a strong password for it. It is working just fine, and I am very impressed. Thanks, guys! -tuna --- PLUG-discuss mailing list - PLUG-discuss@lists.plug.phoenix.az.us To subscribe, unsubscribe, or to change your mail settings: http://lists.PLUG.phoenix.az.us/mailman/listinfo/plug-discuss

Hi, Sorry for the loss, tuna, glad you're ok! Hope you can get something, or that one of your neighbors saw/heard something (I know you said they didn't on IRC last night but perhaps the situation has changed?) ~Ryan On Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 8:07 PM, Tuna [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: AH Some guy just broke in and stole my dad's laptop! Re: OT: I've Been Burgled!
I use: http://adeona.cs.washington.edu/ "Adeona is the first Open Source system for tracking the location of your lost or stolen laptop that does not rely on a proprietary, central service. This means that you can install Adeona on your laptop and go there's no need to rely on a single third party. What's more, Adeona addresses a critical privacy goal different from existing commercial offerings. It is privacy-preserving. This means that no one besides the owner (or an agent of the owner's choosing) can use Adeona to track a laptop. Unlike other systems, users of Adeona can rest assured that no one can abuse the system in order to track where they use their laptop. Adeona is designed to use the Open Source OpenDHT distributed storage service to store location updates sent by a small software client installed on an owner's laptop. The client continually monitors the current location of the laptop, gathering information (such as IP addresses and local network topology) that can be used to identify its current location. The client then uses strong cryptographic mechanisms to not only encrypt the location data, but also ensure that the ciphertexts stored within OpenDHT are anonymous and unlinkable. At the same time, it is easy for an owner to retrieve location information." Stephen P Rufle wrote: http://www.lojackforlaptops.com/ Has anyone actually used this. I like what I see at Adeona. I would like to point out, that even with this if your criminal is smart enough to wipe the drive. You may never find it, but I think like a car lock, it is certainly better then not having it. I really like the pics at the bottom of the site for the Mac OS X version :) --- PLUG-discuss mailing list - PLUG-discuss@lists.plug.phoenix.az.us To subscribe, unsubscribe, or to change your mail settings: http://lists.PLUG.phoenix.az.us/mailman/listinfo/plug-discuss

In Oregon, when a laptop was stollen from FreeGeek where I taught, it was swiftly recovered, since the community is fairly small. This looks like a meth hit. Nothing like that chemical to make people want to steal - thinking they are transcending conventionalism with drug use, while feeding quantifiable textbook changing neurochemicals substances into their systems. But then again, our schools are known for robbing, rather than inducing, critical thought? Oppression creates such obsessive responses. pout It was JUST 3 WEEKS old? RE: OT: I've Been Burgled!
I just went to the Dell Future of Computing event this week and the Lojack for Laptops folks were there(they have actually changed their name to AbsoluteSoftware), and I hit them up with lots of questions about how the person who stole it could get around it. Basically, if you get one of the new Dell E-family laptops they actually have it encoded in the firmware so even if your thief pulls the HD and puts in a new one, unless he knows where to look in the firmware they can still track and retrieve your laptop. If you want to be vindictive you can also call them and have them activate a worm that will destroy all the data on the HD(and again, since it is on the firmware it will keep working even if they try to install a new HD), so you basically have a doorstop. On my dell laptop the agent is built into the bios. It appears to phone home about once a day. There account website requires IE 6+ to access. My laptop has never been stolen so cannot speak to how well they do or don't recover. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Stephen P Rufle Sent: Friday, October 10, 2008 9:14 AM To: Main PLUG discussion list Subject: Re: OT: I've Been Burgled! http://www.lojackforlaptops.com/ Has anyone actually used this.
